Remember when we turned ahead the clock?

Seeing the Brewers in those sharp looking mustard uni's got me reminiscing about those "Turn Ahead the Clock" jersey's. Here is an interesting article about the first Turn Ahead the Clock game between the Royal and Mariners that happened the year before the whole league did it and the story behind it. For those of you who are fans of the ridiculous and absurd you will love it. If you are a baseball traditionalist, you probably won't. Enjoy.

When Junior arrived on the day of the game, he simply took over. He decided the jerseys looked better untucked.

I told him I disagreed and that the team, especially the pitcher, could

not play with their jerseys untucked. Junior responded, "Didn't the

White Sox play with untucked jerseys in the 1970s?" He had me there.

Junior then went on to say that the team was going to play with their caps backward.

I told him, "Junior, no team has ever done that -- it will make us look

like a softball team." He just flashed that smile of his and said,

"It's the future, Kev -- anything is possible!"

Turns out Junior

was just getting started. He'd brought a couple of cans of silver spray

paint to the park with him and was walking around the clubhouse

spray-painting his teammates' shoes

and some of their gloves. He also decided that the red undershirt

sleeves were too long, so he went around to each guy and cut the

sleeves, Ted Kluszewski-style. We were truly "Sleeveless in Seattle." (Dan Wilson, however, did not cut his sleeves, so he looked more like how the uniforms were designed to look.)

It

was great to see all the players having fun with it, but I was coming

unglued. But in the end it was like, "Well, this isn't quite what we

designed, but so be it. It's gonna be one of those nights."

The umpires (who wore metallic silver shirts of their own) wouldn't let our pitcher

-- I believe it was Kenny Cloude -- wear the untucked jersey or the

backward cap, but everyone else did, at least at first. And sure enough,

with two outs in the top of the second inning, a ball was hit deep into

the left-center gap, and Junior

-- with his cap on backward, his jersey untucked, his glove painted

silver, and metallic silver Nike shoes -- made a classic Griffey catch,

running into the wall.

After a few innings, I think the Royals'

manager, Tony Muser, argued that the untucked jerseys gave our hitters

an unfair advantage, because they could more easily be nicked by a

pitch, so we had to tuck them in for the rest of the game.

Word from Loe is that the Brewers loved the Mustard unis so much, that they asked for them to be included in the regular rotation.
Crap. I hated them. Don't look good at all with the white pants.
I loved them, to the point I would consider buying a mustard jersey. Most everyone in the game thread, like you, said they didn't like them with the white pants. Maybe a compromise is to change the road alternates from blue to mustard so they'll only wear them with gray pants?

I feel the Brewers have needed a 3rd color jersey for a while. I don't consider the retro ones to be a third jersey. I thought the yellow ones looked good when the All Star game was in Milwaukee and wished they would have used it. I hope they go with these yellow ones in the future. I think black would look good too but it is too close to the navy. To be honest, I can't see any problem with yellow with white pants. Every home team wears white pants with whatever color top they wear.

I am obviously a fan of future barrelman http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif, but did not really like the jersey color last night.

OTOH, I thought it looked fine with the pants, I just prefer the blue color.

Most everyone in the game thread, like you, said they didn't like them with the white pants.

Maybe they just looked bad on WMLW...doesn't everything http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . (I was seeing them from the club level.)

To me the All-stars with that color look bad because of the pinstripe pants. I've never liked mixing pinstripe pants with solid color jerseys of any color, it just looks mis-matched. If you have pinstripes they need to be on both the pants and the shirts, imo.

To me, if anything, there seems to be more of an issue with the hat color than the pants: http://www.jsonline.com/s...s/brewers/123693329.html

Yellow, mustard, or "sand" should never be used as a uniform color, as it looks horrible with most skin tones and white which is usually present. If it must be used, pants or the same color should be worn, but then you start looking like the 1970's Athletics or Pirates, or a certain local football team. Stick to dark blue or white for the home jersey, and gray, dark blue, or light blue for the road.

Vanderbilt seems to pull off yellow tops fine.

I actually think it looks pretty terrible with yellow pants. Yellow pants is just a terrible idea.

Vanderbilt's "yellow" is significantly different from the mustard asplosion yellow the Brewers pulled out of who knows where last night.

I'd at least want to see the yellow pants with the yellow top, and I'm pretty sure blue would have looked a lot better than white. Blue would have bookended with the hats, at least. Grey would have been better, too. Oh, well.

Thoughts from my blog.

Ahh...A topic I am very happy to discuss.

This yellow, the Cerveceros yellow or the yellow that outlines the "M" logo behind homeplate (my preferred choice) SHOULD be used as the 2nd color rather than the shimmery gold that adorns the current uniform. Additionally, as much as I thought didn't like the current font for the name and number, I actually love it without the white outline like on the back of Sosa's jersey. Looks much better than ti currently does.

While I am on the topic, they need to darken the navy on the hats to a true dark navy (think Twins or Braves). Look at the batting helmets compared to the hats. They don't match. Also, fix the weird scripting of Brewers. Some "B's" in Brewers start at right side of the stomach with the "S" ending at the left shoulder whereas some of them start at the chest and go straight across.

A couple tweaks and I will be happy with the uni.

By the way, the current M with barley is really an awesome logo. It's a classic. Even though I advocate for the return of the ball and glove logo, I never want the current logo to go away.

Ah Brewers uniform discussion. I love it. You guys should check out the 8 page thread at the Sportslogo site:

Some good comments on Brewers logos and the yellow jerseys.

I think for home games we should have our white jerseys, along with a new mustard home jersey. For the road we should have "Milwaukee" script on both road grays and the road blue alternate. I think the mustard looks alright with white pants. The A's pull off yellow jerseys with white pants well.

Please...no black jerseys.
