Final: @Dunedin 10, Brevard County 8

The 'Tees blew an 8-3 lead in this one, with Corey Frerichs detonating for six runs (five earned). Frerichs had relieved Hiram Burgos, who somehow allowed three runs on only four hits in 3.2 innings. Rolando Pascual let in a run in the 8th but managed not to walk anyone. Jon Pokorny, despite walking three in 1.2 innings, was the only pitcher to go unscored upon, thanks to four strikeouts. That's the Pokorny we saw last year at Wisconsin. In cheerier news, Brock Kjeldgaard continues to go medieval on the Florida State League, finishing 3-4 and just a double short of the cycle; he was also hit by a pitch. Big Brock had three hits in his first three at-bats before being plunked in his fourth trip and finally being retired his last time up. Shea Vucinich also homered, and Scooter Gennett, Khris Davis, Scott Krieger, and Mike Brownstein each had two hits; Gennett tripled and the latter three each had a double, with Khris also drawing a walk. Shawn Zarraga singled, Hunter Morris drew a walk (just his eighth of the year), and Kentrail Davis put up a big, ugly 0-5 with three strikeouts to drop his average to .236, plus a fielding error to boot (ha!). Speaking of Kentrail Davis not being very good, what does it say about his defensive abilities that Kjeldgaard seems to have become the team's center fieldeR?

Obviously we have no idea how hard or where these balls were hit, but after five chances, the BC outfield finally made an out in the 6th:

Dunedin Bottom of the 6th
  • A. J. Jimenez walks.
  • Brian Van Kirk called out on strikes.
  • Chris Hopkins singles on a fly ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis. A. J. Jimenez to 2nd.
  • Ivan Contreras singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis. A. J. Jimenez scores. Chris Hopkins to 3rd.
  • Justin Jackson singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Chris Hopkins scores. Ivan Contreras scores. Justin Jackson to 2nd. Fielding error by right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Pitcher Change: Jonathan Pokorny replaces Corey Frerichs.
  • Kevin Nolan singles on a line drive to center fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Justin Jackson scores.
  • Sean Ochinko strikes out swinging. Kevin Nolan steals (2) 2nd base.
  • Brad Glenn flies out to left fielder Khristopher Davis.

As much as people want to peg Fiers as a reliever, he sure has no issues being a starter. The odd part is that this year he has been much more successful against lefties than righties.

Whatever adjustments the roving hitting instructor had Kjeldgaard make sure are working wonders. Could we have that roving hitting instructor's next go-around with Brevard involve a lot of quality time with Kentrail Davis?

Edit: just noticed that Kjeldgaard's splits vs. lefties in 44 ABs this year are a .490 OBP, .727 SLG, and a 1.217 OPS. That's ridiculous. The OPS vs. righties is an ok .812, but it comes on a .319 OBP and .218 BA.

Final: @Huntsville 4, Jackson 3 (11 innings)

Walk-off win! This was a 1-1 game after ten innings; Lucas Luetge allowing two runs in the top of the 11th seemed to sink the Stars, but they stormed back with three in the bottom to win a thriller. Michael Fiers started and was outstanding, allowing just two hits and no walks in seven innings; the only run he allowed came on a solo homer, and he struck out seven. Fiers was very efficient, needing just 89 pitches to get through those seven frames and throwing a ton of strikes (65). Logan Schafer had two hits, Lee Haydel singled and walked, and Brandon Jones was on three times. Erik Komatsu unfortunately continued his cold spell by putting up a goose egg, seeing his average drop to '68 Yastrzemski levels--.301. I have every confidence that Little Pine will now go on a large tear; hitting below .300 just isn't cool.

Jackson Top of the 11th

  • Pitcher Change: Lucas Luetge replaces Robert Hinton.
  • Nate Tenbrink flies out to center fielder Erik Komatsu.
  • Kuo Hui Lo walks.
  • Kyle Seager singles on a ground ball to right fielder Brandon Jones. Kuo Hui Lo to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Jim Henderson replaces Lucas Luetge.
  • Scott Savastano hits a sacrifice bunt. Kuo Hui Lo scores. Kyle Seager to 2nd. Scott Savastano to 1st.
  • Jake Shaffer strikes out swinging.
  • With Johermyn Chavez batting, Kyle Seager steals (8) 3rd base, Kyle Seager scores. Missed catch error by first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Johermyn Chavez grounds out, first baseman Sean Halton to pitcher Jim Henderson.

Huntsville Bottom of the 11th

  • Hainley Statia singles on a line drive to center fielder Kuo Hui Lo.
  • Logan Schafer grounds out, second baseman Scott Savastano to first baseman Rich Poythress. Hainley Statia to 2nd.
  • Erik Komatsu strikes out swinging.
  • Sean Halton singles on a ground ball to right fielder Johermyn Chavez. Hainley Statia scores.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Matt Cline replaces Sean Halton.
  • Brandon Jones walks. Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Steffan Wilson singles on a line drive to right fielder Johermyn Chavez. Matt Cline scores. Brandon Jones to 3rd. Steffan Wilson to 2nd on the throw.
  • Lee Haydel singles on a ground ball to center fielder Kuo Hui Lo. Brandon Jones scores. Steffan Wilson to 3rd.

Wow! Great game.

Speaking of Kentrail Davis not being very good, what does it say about his defensive abilities that Kjeldgaard seems to have become the team's center fielder?
I knew that didn't sound quite right. I've been out of the loop for the past couple days with no internet and completely forgot about D'Vontrey Richardson. He didn't play tonight and hasn't since the 6th. He's really struggled with injuries this year; this would be his third DL stint already if it comes to that. I guess he inherited Kentrail Davis's curse from last year; hopefully he doesn't also have to inherit Davis's demotion.

Final: @Albuquerque 7, Nashville 6

I'm sure the game story will be posted at some point tonight, but I'm tired & have to hit the road early tomorrow morning.

Nashville Box Score

The Isotopes took a 6-3 lead into the top of the 7th inning after roughing up Sounds starter Sam Narron to the tune of twelve hits, six runs, & two home runs. However, singles from Zelous Wheeler & Brett Carroll, combined with a two-run homer from cleanup hitter Mat Gamel, brought the score back to even heading into the 8th. Relievers Zack Segovia & Donovan Hand combined to keep Albuquerque off the scoreboard in the 7th, 8th, & 9th innings, and the game went to extras. Sean Green didn't fare as well, surrendering a walk-off home run to the first batter he faced. Just as quickly as the game had gone to extra innings, it was over. The walk-off came from the first batter in the bottom of the 10th, Isotopes leftfielder Trayvon Robinson.

Carroll & Wheeler both went 2-4, & Gamel was 1-5. Erick Almonte went 2-5 with a double. George Kottaras was 1-4 with a double. Taylor Green didn't start, but finished 1-2 with a double after coming in on a double-switch in the 6th inning.

Former Brewers prospect Dana Eveland went six innings, allowed six hits, three runs, walked two & struck out two.

Nashville Play-by-Play

The 7th inning rally:

Nashville Top of the 7th
  • Pitcher Change: Travis Schlichting replaces Dana Eveland, batting 9th.
  • Zelous Wheeler singles on a line drive to center fielder Jamie Hoffmann.
  • Taylor Green grounds out, pitcher Travis Schlichting to first baseman John Lindsey. Zelous Wheeler to 2nd.
  • Eric Farris pops out to shortstop Justin Sellers.

Zelous Wheeler scores. Brett Carroll to 2nd on the throw.
  • Mat Gamel homers (10) on a fly ball to right field. Brett Carroll scores.
  • Erick Almonte grounds out, shortstop Justin Sellers to first baseman John Lindsey.

Final: Fort Wayne 11, @Wisconsin 5

Playoff hopes take a hit

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Wisconsin Timber

Rattlers 11-5 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Fort Wayne

collected 17 hits and took advantage of five Timber Rattlers errors in

the win. Chris Bisson led the way for the Fort Wayne offense with four

hits and four RBI. The loss dropped the Rattlers two games off the pace

of the Wild Card leaders. Wisconsin has nine games left in the first

half.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Brooks Hall escaped the first inning without

allowing a run despite giving up three hits. Hall gave up hits to the

first two batters he faced in the second inning on a single and a

double. But, Hall looked he would get out of the inning when he got the

next two batters. However, Bisson drove a single through the left side

of the infield for a 2-0 lead.

Luis Domoromo lined a two-out solo homer in the top of the third and the TinCaps (27-33) were up 3-0.

Wisconsin started the back-and-forth portion of the game in the fourth

inning. Fort Wayne starter Adys Portillo, who had allowed one hit and

struck out five in the first three innings, loaded the bases on a

double, single, and walk with no outs. A walk to TJ Mittelstaedt forced

in a run and drove Portillo from the game. One out later, Fort Wayne

reliever Noah Mull walked Yadiel Rivera to force in another run and the

Rattlers were down 3-2. But, Wisconsin left the bases loaded.

Fort Wayne put two runs on the board in the top of the fifth. Rymer

Liriano singled in a run against Hall. Hall got the second out of the

inning, but a walk ended his night. Reliever Del Howell entered the

game and gave up a walk and an RBI single to give the TinCaps a 5-2

lead.

Greg Hopkins hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth and the

Rattlers were back within a run. Then, Wisconsin had runners at second

and third with one out in the frame with a chance to tie the game or

take the lead. But, both runners were left stranded.

Fort Wayne responded with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to go

back up by three runs. Consecutive two-out RBI singles by Liriano and

Domoromo made the score 7-4.

The Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth

inning. Cody Hawn lifted a flyball to right-center to drive in Franklin

Romero from third. Reggie Keen, the runner at second, tagged and went

to third. Nick Shaw, the runner at first, went halfway to second, but

slipped in the basepath between first and second as he started back for

first base. The throw to first doubled Shaw up and the next batter was

retired to strand Keen at third and leave the Rattlers down 7-5.

The score remained 7-5 until the TinCaps scored an unearned run in the

top of the eighth. Fort Wayne tacked on three more unearned runs in the

top of the ninth as Wisconsin committed three errors in the ninth.

It was bad news all around the Midwest League scoreboard for the Timber

Rattlers. Quad Cities, the leaders in the Western Division Wild Card

race, destroyed Great Lakes 20-2. Peoria beat South Bend 6-3 and Beloit

edged Lake County 3-2 in ten innings.

Wisconsin (32-29) has dropped into a three-way tie for third place in

the Western Division with Peoria (31-30) and Beloit (31-30). All three

teams trail Quad Cities (34-27) by two games in the chase for the Wild

Card.

Game two of the series is Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field.

Dan Britt (3-1, 4.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the

Rattlers. Andrew Werner (1-5, 3.60) is set to start for the TinCaps.

Game time is 6:35pm.

The Timber Rattlers celebrate the science fiction classic Star Wars™

with Star Wars Night. The players and coaches will wear special jerseys

based on the movies. The jerseys will be available in a silent auction

to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin. Characters

will be on hand to meet fans and throw out a first pitch before the

game, too.

After the game, FOX 11 presents a Saturday Night Fireworks Display.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the game on

AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame

Show at 6:15pm.

HOME RUNS:

FW:

Luis Domoromo (4th, 0 on in 3rd inning, off Brooks Hall, 2 out)

WIS:

Greg Hopkins (1st, 1 on in 5th inning, off Noah Mull, 1 out)

WP: Jeff Ibarra (1-2)

LP: Brooks Hall (2-1)

TIME: 3:28

ATTN: 3,430

Wisconsin Box Score

Keen & Hopkins both had two hits; Keen added a walk & his 24th stolen base of the season (75% success rate). Shaw, Hawn, Walker, Mittelstaedt, & Franklin Romero each had one hit; Mittelstaedt walked twice, Walker once. Yadiel Rivera's RBI walk was his lone contribution to the offense tonight.

Brooks Hall's final line: 4.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R/ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Reliever Eric Marzec struck out four in his two innings of work, but three errors behind him led to four runs -- none of them earned. Marzec allowed a single, a triple, and walked one.

Wisconsin Play-by-Play

After six innings, the T-Rats had closed the defecit to 7-5, and were even down just by three after the 8th. But the TinCaps capitalized on defensive blunders by Wisconsin to secure the game:

Fort Wayne Top of the 9th
  • Tyler Stubblefield reaches on throwing error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera.
  • With Connor Powers batting, Tyler Stubblefield steals (1) 2nd base.
  • Connor Powers strikes out swinging.
  • Emmanuel Quiles reaches on fielding error by first baseman Cody Hawn. Tyler Stubblefield to 3rd.
  • Chris Bisson triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Reggie Keen. Tyler Stubblefield scores. Emmanuel Quiles scores.
  • Rico Noel walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Charly Bashara replaces Eric Marzec.
  • Rymer
Liriano grounds into a force out, second baseman Nick Shaw to shortstop
Yadiel Rivera. Chris Bisson scores. Rico Noel out at 2nd. Rymer
Liriano advances to 2nd, on throwing error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera.
  • Luis Domoromo flies out to center fielder Reggie Keen.

Obviously making up a three-run margin in the 9th isn't easy, but it's sure a heckuva lot easier than six runs. Marzec should've been out of the 9th with no damage.

  • Jon Talley flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.

  • Brian Van Kirk doubles (8) on a fly ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis.

This is definitely something to watch. Burgos had pitched a scoreless 3rd inning as well; he's stretched out, there's no logical reason for his removal at that point in the game.

Final: DSL Red Sox 13, @DSL Brewers 2

Were due for a clunker...

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Red Sox scored in six different innings so several of their kids are now probably on their way to Fenway for next week's series; each of five Brewer hurlers were met with poor results -- they combined to walk 11 batters while fanning only two, while throwing five wild pitches. Among the mound victims was Opening Day starter 17-year-old RHP Osmel Perez, who has looked quite ordinary to the dismay of the Power 50 editors. CF Yonki Hernandez (you can never have enough Yonki's) was caught stealing for the 3rd time already this season (now 3-for-6 on the basepaths); one of the club's higher profile signees, 18-year-old RF Jose Pena, in his second season, had a productive day all around, 2-for-4 with two outfield assists, including a direct throw to home plate. There were plenty of substitutions late, but none seem to indicate red flags, just getting everyone action within the rout.

DSL Brewers Play-by-Play

17-year-old LHP Marcos Padilla placed the first three men on in the 8th, then watched as all came across against 18-year-old RHP Doni Arias --

DSL Red Sox Top of the 8th

  • Defensive Substitution: Dionis Hinojosa replaces center fielder Yonki Hernandez, batting 1st, playing center field.
  • Defensive Substitution: Raphachel Colatosti replaces shortstop Orlando Arcia, batting 2nd, playing shortstop.
  • Aneudis Peralta walks.
  • Deiner Lopez singles on a ground ball to second baseman Alejandro Mendoza. Aneudis Peralta to 2nd.
  • Alixon Suarez walks. Aneudis Peralta to 3rd. Deiner Lopez to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Doni Arias replaces Marcos Padilla.

Walkoff Blast Drops Sounds In Extras In Albuquerque, 7-6

Nashville moves to 0-4 in extra-inning play this season

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Trayvon Robinson hit a walkoff 10th inning home run to lift the Albuquerque Isotopes to 7-6 win over the Nashville Sounds on Friday evening at Isotopes Park.

Robinson's 13th home run was his only hit of the game, as the outfielder blasted Sean Green's (0-1) second pitch of the inning over the wall in centerfield to end the game. Moving to 0-4 in extra-inning play this season, Nashville (27-33) never led game, but tied the contest three separate times.

The one-run loss for Nashville was the club's PCL-leading 17th of the season, which has accounted for just over half of the team's total defeats.

Merkin Valdez (3-1) earned the win with five strikeouts over two scoreless innings.

While also recording his PCL-leading 11th outfield assist, centerfielder Brett Carroll went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Erick Almonte and Zelous Wheeler also added two hits.

Albuquerque plated the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning as Wheeler committed his first throwing error of the game to allow John Lindsay to reach base. Lindsay moved to second on a Russ Mitchell single, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on a Jamie Hoffman sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Albuquerque lead.

Sounds starter Sam Narron helped his own cause in the next frame. Wheeler banged a one-out triple to right field and scored to tie the contest at 1-1 as Narron hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The RBI was Narron's first of the season.

The Isotopes homered twice in the next frame to take a 5-1 lead. Justin Sellers led off with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot over the wall in left field. After two consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly, Lindsay belted a two-run homer to left field for his fifth on the year.

The Sounds got two runs back to cut the Albuquerque lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Carroll was issued a five-pitch walk to lead off the inning and later scored on an Almonte line drive double to center. Edwin Maysonet then singled home Almonte for the club's second run of the inning.

Albuquerque added another run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-3 after Narron allowed three straight singles, highlighted by an RBI base hit Eugenio Velez.

The Sounds struck back and knotted the contest at 6-6 in the top of the seventh off reliever Travis Schlichting. Wheeler hit a line drive single to lead off and later came home on a Carroll RBI single. First Baseman Mat Gamel then came to the dish and belted a two-out, game-tying homer to right field to send the game to extra-innings. The two-run homer was the slugger's 10th of the season. (You can hear the audio of Mat the Batt's last via the link leading off this post.)

Ranking third in the PCL with a 3.13 ERA coming into the contest, Narron scattered 12 hits while allowed a season-high six runs (five earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Zack Segovia pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings while stranding both of his inherited runners. Donovan Hand contributed two shutout frames.

Former Sound Dana Eveland tossed a quality start for a no-decision for Albuquerque. The left-hander allowed three runs on six hits in six innings.

The first Sound to record a double-digit hitting streak of the season, Gindl went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Joe Koshansky's season-ending 18-gamer in 2010 was the last time a Sound recorded a double-digit streak.

Taylor Green added a double to extend his extra-base hitting streak to five games. Eric Farris went 0-for-5 to snap his streak of reaching base safely at 24 games, which was the longest stretch by a Sound in 2011 and the 3rd-longest active streak in the PCL.

The Sounds and Isotopes will play the third game of a four-game set at 5:35 PM CT on Saturday evening at Isotopes Park. Nashville right-hander Amaury Rivas (4-5, 4.36) takes the mound against Albuquerque southpaw Randy Keisler (1-2, 5.96).

Timber Rattlers lose more ground in playoff race with loss to Fort Wayne

Wisconsin two games behind Quad Cities in playoff race

by Mike Woods, Appleton Post-Crescent

GRAND CHUTE — This is what a death march looks like.

Your pitching staff gives up 17 hits. Your offense goes one-for-nine with runners in scoring position. Your defense commits five errors. All in a tidy three hours, 28 minutes.

The 11-5 loss Friday to Fort Wayne in Midwest League play on Time Warner Field at Fox Cities Stadium again dropped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers two games behind Quad Cities for the final first-half playoff spot with nine games to play.

And it marked the second time this week the Rattlers laid the proverbial egg on their home field.

"It's equally disappointing,'' said Rattlers manager Matt Erickson. "But tonight, that team offensively is pretty hot right now. From my understanding they had 20 hits (Thursday) and 17 more (Friday).''

Despite the TinCaps' offensive prowess in taking a 3-0 lead, the Rattlers fought back within 3-2. After Fort Wayne stretched it to 5-2, the Rattlers came back within 5-4. But this would be a pattern that would continue, with the Rattlers unable to come up with the key hits in the middle of the game.

"I was proud of our fight in the middle of the game,'' said Erickson. "We put together five runs in three innings. We had the bases loaded and one out and left some runners out there. We had second and third with one out and left some runners out there and we had the bases loaded again and only get one run.

"So we had some opportunities to kind of break the game open, I thought, and take the lead even with them swinging the hot bats. But then, obviously, in the latter part of that game we completely fall apart again. Concentration level, we had a situation where we didn't know how many outs there were on the bases and then we blow up in the last inning defensively. That was frustrating.''

About the lone bright spot for the Rattlers was the continued stellar play of third baseman Greg Hopkins. He went two-for-five, including his first home run of the season. He has a 10-game hitting streak in which he has gone 17-for-40. Friday marked his sixth straight multi-hit game.

But he wasn't exactly a happy camper afterward.

"That was an ugly one, man,'' said Hopkins. "Hopefully, we won't have too many of those.

"In the end, a game like that just everything doesn't feel too good after that. But we'll come back (today) ready to go. Hope we turn the tables around.''

Though he was happy to see a ball leave the yard off his bat for the first time this season, even though it was close.

"He threw me a fastball inside,'' said Hopkins. "I was hoping that was staying fair. It would have been kind of brutal if it went foul. I'm just glad it stayed inside the poll.''

Erickson said he didn't feel the need to say much to his team afterward.

"I said we were pretty sloppy,'' said Erickson. "I said we'll have a full workday (today). I said I don't think we got much out of today. We'll have a full workday (today) and, hopefully, we'll have a better showing on the field. That was it.

"Hopefully, they're talking amongst themselves about it. We're in the middle of the season now. They're big enough boys where we don't need to smear them after the game after every little negative that we do. Hopefully, there's some accountability and a learning process going on amongst themselves in there.''
