Red-Hot Sounds Rout Isotopes In Series Opener, 14-1

Gindl Fuels Nashville Offense With Two Homers, Five RBIs

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Caleb Gindl belted two homers and drove in five runs

to lead the red-hot Nashville Sounds to a 14-1 thumping of the

Albuquerque Isotopes on Thursday evening at Isotopes Park in the opener

of a four-game series.

The win was the sixth in the last seven games for Nashville (27-32).

During the five games on their current road trip, the Sounds have

outscored the opposition, 50-9.

Gindl (2-for-4) established a new career high with five RBIs in the

contest and became the fifth different Nashville player to record a

two-homer game this season. With the solid night, Gindl extended his

hitting streak to nine games, matching the longest effort by a Sounds

player this season (fourth occurrence, joining Farris, Kottaras, and

Maysonet).

Every Sounds position player recorded a knock by the fifth inning and

seven of the eight finished with multiple hits on the evening, led by

catcher George Kottaras' 4-for-5 effort.

Right-hander Mark DiFelice (2-1) pitched well to earn his first victory

in a starting role this season, working five scoreless innings while

allowing four hits and striking out five. He stranded Albuquerque

runners in scoring position in three separate innings.

Chase Wright worked the final four innings for Nashville, allowing one

run on four hits, and was credited with his first save of the year.

For the third time in the past four games, Nashville erupted for a

six-run first inning against the opposition, roughing up veteran

Isotopes starter Tim Redding in the opening frame to jump ahead for a

quick 6-0 lead.

After Brandon Boggs (3-for-5) opened the contest with a single to

center, Jordan Brown and Eric Farris followed with back-to-back RBI

doubles to give the Sounds a 2-0 advantage.

Red-hot catcher George Kottaras stepped in and delivered a two-run homer

to right, his third longball of the season. He continued his hot

hitting with a 4-for-5 night, missing the cycle by a triple, and has hit

safely in 17 of his last 20 tilts at a .411 clip (30-for-73).

Later in the frame, Gindl slugged the visitors' second two-run jack of

the inning, belting a mammoth homer to dead center that cleared the wall

beyond the 428-foot mark. Edwin Maysonet (walk) also scored on the

outfielder's fifth roundtripper of the season.

Nashville tacked on five more runs against Redding in the third to stretch the lead to 11-0.

Gindl continued his power surge when he crushed another massive home

run, a three-run shot to center that landed on the berm well beyond the

center field wall and upped the visitors' lead to 9-0. Kottaras and Mat

Gamel, who each preceded Gindl with a single to start the inning.

The Sounds' third-inning rally continued when Taylor Green (3-for-5)

followed Gindl's blast with a double to extend his hit streak to seven

and came around to score on a Boggs two-out RBI triple to right that

chased Redding. Brown greeted new Isotopes reliever Mario Alvarez by

dumping on 0-2 offering into right field for a run-scoring single that

made it an 11-0 contest.

Gamel upped the Nashville lead to 13-0 in the fifth when his two-out,

bases-loaded single to center off Alvarez plated DiFelice and Boggs

after the Albuquerque right-hander issued three free passes to fill the

bags.

The Sounds scratched across another run in the top of the sixth when

Gindl drew an inning-opening walk from Alvarez and later scored for the

third time on Boggs' two-out single to center extend the lead to 14-0.

Albuquerque broke up Nashville's shutout bid with two outs in the bottom

of the ninth inning against Wright when Trayvon Robinson ripped an RBI

single up the middle to score ex-Sound JD Closser, who had doubled with

one out.

Redding (2-6) took the loss for Albuquerque after being tattooed for 11

runs on 10 hits (seven for extra bases) in just 2 2/3 innings of work.

The teams continue the series with another 8:05 p.m. CT meeting on

Friday night. Left-hander Sam Narron (4-2, 3.13) will man the bump for

the Sounds to face former Nashville hurler Dana Eveland (6-3, 3.90).

Nashville Box Score

Make that one or two games left. But go Sounds! Prove me pathetically wrong!

Boggs, Brown, & Farris continue to top the order for Nashville. I'm not a fan of Don Money the manager. Caleb Gindl's massive night came out of the SEVENTH spot in the lineup, right ahead of Taylor Green, who's been hot at the plate for weeks now. Seriously, Eric Farris is batting third. Yikes. Anyway, the batters were awesome tonight. The game story noted most of it. Click the box score link -- you'll see lots of hits & runs & RBI, and it'll make you happy.

Good pitching, too. Not only effective outings, but Chase Wright made sure that no one else in the bullpen had to put in any work on the mound. Nice piggyback effort between him & DiFelice. DiFelice threw 42 of 63 pitches for strikes tonight, a very efficient outing.

Big innings... here we go:

18 PAs in those two innings. The Sounds are playing really well of late; this is probably going to be their best stretch of the season. I know shortly after I joined up with the Link Report crew, Mass Haas noted that he & Eric had had a tough time making the Sounds link reports interesting... well, the Sounds have been taking care of that lately, and it's been fun to follow. At this point, Nashville just has a very good lineup, even if it's constructed poorly.

Final: @Wisconsin 5, Lake County 4

Rattlers win, pick up ground in playoff chase

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Tyler Thornburg struck out 10 over seven innings and

picked up the victory as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers edged the Lake

County Captains 5-4 Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The

Rattlers win was coupled with a loss by Quad Cities to allow Wisconsin

to move to within a game of the Western Division Wild Card spot with ten

games remaining in the first half.

Reggie Keen got the Rattlers (32-28) on the board first when he scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning.

But, the Captains (28-32) rallied for a pair of runs with two outs in

the top of the second inning. An RBI double by Brian Heere was followed

by an RBI single off the bat of Argenis Martinez to give Lake County a

2-1 lead.

Thornburg shut the Captains down the rest of the time he was in the

game. The Rattlers right-hander retired the final 16 batters he faced.

Thornburg matched his career high for strikeouts in a game with 10 and

walked one. He gave up four hits, all in the second inning, but needed

the Wisconsin bats to get going to put himself in line for his sixth win

of the season.

Chris Dennis delivered in the third with a two-run single to put the

Rattlers up 3-2. Cody Hawn knocked in a run with a double in the

fourth. Greg Hopkins, who moved his hitting streak to nine games

earlier in the night, clubbed an RBI double off the wall in left in the

sixth and the Rattlers were up 5-2.

Thornburg turned the game over to the bullpen in the eighth inning, but

Wisconsin needed three pitchers to get through the frame. Eric Marzec

got the first out, but a single and a walk put two runners on base.

Ronny Rodriguez singled in a run and knocked Marzec out of the game.

Tom Keeling struck out the next batter for the second out, but walked the second batter he faced to load the bases.

Rattlers closer Greg Holle got the final out of the inning with a grounder to third.

In the top of the ninth, the first two Lake County hitters reached on

singles against Holle. A sacrifice bunt moved the tying runs into

scoring position. An RBI grounder by Martinez made the score 5-4 and

sent the tying run to third with two outs.

Holle walked a batter on a 3-2 pitch to put runners on the corners.

But, Holle finally closed out the game when he got Rodriguez to ground

out to third base. Holle is 13 for 13 in save opportunities this

season.

Quad Cities lost 2-0 to Lansing on Thursday night to fall to 33-27.

Wisconsin trails the River Bandits by one game for the first half

Western Division Wild Card. The River Bandits have nine games left in

the half. The Rattlers have ten games left in the half.

Wisconsin starts a series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Friday night at

Time Warner Cable Field at 7:05pm. Brooks Hall (2-0, 3.27) is the

scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Fort Wayne has Adys

Portillo (1-6, 7.32) as their scheduled starting pitcher.

Friday night is a North Shore Bank/95.9 KISS-FM Family Night at the

ballpark. As part of Family Night children 12 and under eat free. After

the game, 95.9 KISS-FM presents the first fireworks display of the 2011

season! After the fireworks, Fazoli's invites children 14 and under to

participate in Kids Run the Bases.

Also, the first 500 fans will receive a complimentary special Timber Rattlers edition of Inside Wisconsin Sports Magazine.

Wisconsin Box Score

Keen, Hawn, & Hopkins each had two hits, with Hawn & Hopkins notching doubles. Nick Shaw had a single & a walk. Mike Walker lived up to his name, going 0-1 with two walks. T.J. Mittelstaedt was 1-3 with a walk.

Thornburg's final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 10 K. Tyler was literally perfect in innings 3 through 7! I liked his selection back on draft day last season, & I'm liking him more & more. However, it's time for the Brewers to challenge him & get him up to Brevard County. In fact, it's been time for that. Let's go, Brewers.

Hopkins continues to clean up for Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in win over Lake County Captains

by Mike Woods, Appleton Post-Crescent

GRAND CHUTE – A good baseball manager will turn over every stone in order to try and unlock the potential of his players.

A short while back, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson sought out radio broadcaster Chris Mehring and quizzed him on where Greg Hopkins was most comfortable and most productive in the lineup last season.

"It came back he hit fourth quite a bit," said Erickson.

So despite an average that was an unspectacular .224, Erickson told Hopkins he would be the team's cleanup hitter. Period, paragraph, amen. And Hopkins has suddenly become Prince Fielder.

He had his fourth straight multi-hit game Thursday, driving in one run and helping the Rattlers to a 5-4 victory over Lake County in Midwest League play on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The victory moved Wisconsin within one game of Quad Cities with 10 games to play for the wild card playoff spot.

Hopkins' two hits Thursday gave him a nine-game hitting streak in which he has gone 15-for-35, a .429 average.

"Matty obviously has shown some confidence in me," said Hopkins. "That helps a lot because I was struggling for a while and once he put me in that slot he definitely gave me some confidence.

"He said 'I don't plan on taking you out of there,' so that made me feel pretty good about his confidence in me. And I just kind of took it from there, had some quality at-bats and that's all I'm trying to do now, string some good at-bats together. Baseball is a big confidence thing. The more confidence you have the better you're going to play."

The same could be said for starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg, who entered the game with a 5-0 record and 1.48 ERA. Despite feeling under the weather the past couple of days that left him unsure of how he could perform once he finished his warm-up, he overcame a shaky start and just overpowered the Captains.

Thornburg went seven innings on the night, gave up two runs on four hits — all in the second inning — walked one and struck out 10. He set down the final 16 batters he faced.

"Actually, I've been sick the past couple of days and I was just trying to get a feel out there for the first few (batters)," said Thornburg. "And then from about the third, fourth inning on my body started getting going and I realized I was all right. I definitely felt the difference."

Erickson said after the second inning Thornburg was relying too heavily on his fastball, so he sent out pitching coach Chris Hook to instruct him to use all of his repertoire, and from there Thornburg took over the game.

"We took him out after the seventh, he was at 103 pitches, but he looked as strong in the seventh as he did any other inning tonight," said Erickson. "I think he finally figured out 'Hey I'm healthy enough to get after it.' And once he got touched up a little bit, his competitiveness took over and he did a nice job."

Final: @Huntsville 6, Jackson 2

Peralta’s 10 Ks Shoot Stars Past Generals, 6-2 in Game One of Series

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Wily Peralta (4-6) got the run support he needed, leading the Huntsville Stars to a 6-2 victory over the Jackson Generals in the series opener on Thursday.

Peralta fanned a season-high ten Jackson batters in his six innings pitched, allowing just two runs on three hits. Daniel Meadows came in relief to pitch the final three innings, earning his first save of the season. Meadows allowed just one hit, a two-out single in the ninth. He added two strikeouts to the Stars’ total, bringing it to 12.

The Stars’ offense came up big in the second inning, crossing five runs and batting around all with two outs. All-star Steffan Wilson started the rally with a double, being the first of five consecutive batters to score. Martin Maldonado scored two runs in the game, he came in to score in the seventh when Erik Komatsu singled. Komatsu joined Logan Schafer with two RBI in the game.

On the hook for the loss was Generals’ starter Erasmo Ramirez (6-3) after being removed from the game after just two innings. It was a very different result from his last outing against Huntsville (8 IP, 1 ER). Ramirez gave up five runs on seven hits.

A combination of relievers, Taylor Stanton, Edward Paredes, and Stephen Penney combined for six innings, allowing four hits.

The Generals got both their runs in the third, loading the bases with two walks and a single.

Friday, game two of the series will put RHP Michael Fiers (2-2, 4.40 ERA) against the pitcher slated to start the Southern League All-Star Game, RHP Jarrett Grube (4-1, 3.57 ERA). The game will begin at 6:43 PM CST.

Huntsville Box Score

OK, so Wily Peralta wants us to know he's earned his All-Star spot; Peralta did walk four, so with all the K's, he hit the 104 pitch mark after six frames; 6'6" 2008 49th round pick LHP Daniel Meadows just continues to shine, the 23-year-old is on a big league career arc -- he's limited right-handed bats to a .182 mark this season (LHB's .226, sweet, now he's truly earned his All-Star spot); five Stars reached base twice...

'Tees blank Jays 2-0

Three pitchers combine for shutout, despite eight walks

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- Adrian Rosario, Evan Anundsen and Mark Willinsky combined to allow just two hits as the Brevard County Manatees shut out the Dunedin Blue Jays 2-0 on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium, in front of 1,550 fans. The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

Rosario started and worked six innings allowed just one hit, struck out five and allowed a season-high six walks.

The Manatees (22-38) jumped out a 1-0 lead in the first as Scooter Gennett led the inning off with a single, then moved to third as Hunter Morris reached base on a fielding error by Dunedin second baseman Ryan Schimpf. Gennett would then score on a Khris Davis ground out.

Dunedin (32-28) had chances in both the second and third against Rosario as he combined to walk four in those two innings, but the Blue Jays were unable to push anything across as they combine to strand five runners in those two frames.

Brevard County added to its lead in the fifth as Shawn Zarraga took the first pitch he saw and sent it over the right field fence for his fourth homer of the year and gave the 'Tees a 2-0 lead.

After the third inning, Dunedin had just two runners reach second base as Brevard County's pitching shut them down, as the Blue Jays stranded nine and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Anundsen earned his third hold of the season by pitching two scoreless innings and Willinsky shut the door in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the year.

Offensively, the Manatees collected just five hits, with two of those belonging to Gennett. After hitting just .212 in May, Gennett is hitting .294 (10-for-34) in June and has an eight-game hitting streak.

Brevard County will close out its series with Dunedin on the road on Friday night and will then travel to Lakeland for a three-game set with the Flying Tigers.

The Manatees will return home on Tuesday, June 14 against the Daytona Cubs.

Adrian Rosario (L) threw six shutout innings and struck out five and All-Star Scooter Gennett had two hits, to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The Manatees snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2011/06/09/xv8Pf88v.jpg

Brevard County Box Score

Teams combined for only seven hits, but the Manatees did not draw a base on balls of their own; Adrian Rosario is only 21 (until September), so he'll be a candidate to return to Brevard next year to continue his development; Kentrail Davis (.685 OPS, yawn) stole his 14th base in 16 tries, but was also 0-for-4 and committed his 5th outfield error; surprisingly, Brock Kjeldgaard did not homer (0-for-3); 22-year-old Shawn Zarraga isn't much older than the Tyler Roberts and Cameron Garfields of the system, is he? Look forward to his AA season next year...

Brevard County Play-by-Play

Rosario came up big here --

Dunedin Top of the 2nd

  • Jon Talley singles on a line drive to left fielder Khristopher Davis.
  • Kevin Ahrens walks. Jon Talley to 2nd.
  • Sean Ochinko flies out to center fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Brian Van Kirk walks. Jon Talley to 3rd. Kevin Ahrens to 2nd.
  • Ryan Schimpf strikes out swinging.
  • Justin Jackson called out on strikes.

DSL Brewers Game One Box Score

SS Orlando Arcia (0-for-3) returned to action, nice to see -- he sat in Game Two; catcher Julio Sotelo, another early exit from Wednesday, did not see action in the doubleheader; if the trumpets blared for Arcia, then we may as well pull out a full-on orchestra for recently-turned 17-year-old RHP Milton Gomez, who now has 11 scoreless pro innings under his belt; Gomez' line -- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 8-to-2 GB-FB; in Gomez' first outing, he tossed six scoreless with seven K's and 0 BB's, but Thursday's effort was just fine, thank you; cleanup hitter and catcher Deivi Mejia threw out two of three basestealers...

DSL Brewers Game One Play-by-Play

The Cerveceros scored both their runs in the 2nd frame on a clutch two-out hit when the chance was about to sqander --

DSL Brewers Game Two Box Score

Darn, kudos to the Brewers' latin scouts and coaches on a fantastic first two weeks! Soon-to-be 18 years old, RHP Jorge Ortega impressed in a five-inning relief stint six days prior, so he nabbed the Game Two start, and did he ever! In only his third pro appearance, Ortega's line -- 7 IP, 3 H (all singles), 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 8-to-3 GB-to-FB - wow, when do you ever see polished performances like this one (and others we've seen from the DSL Crew thus far) this early in the kids' development? The Brewers committed only one erorr in each game on this day, no nonsense with wild pitches, hit batters, balks, etc. We like polished! Six players each had one base hit here.

DSL Brewers Game Two Play-by-Play

Neither run the Brewers scored was earned (1st and 6th innings), but they win and sorry, A's, you didn't; relish in this game log -- Ortega didn't even let a man reach 2nd, we imagine he'll get more starts now...
