Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Jorge Lopez is rated number 64 at Perfect Game. This kid is a project and a good selection for the Brewers, considering he was still on the board. He's a name to watch. I'm wondering if he's going to Arizona instead of Helena because of his age and frame.

I'd give him about 0% chance of debuting in Helena. They never start HS pitchers in Helena. They like to take them slow (Odorizzi played full year at each.) Talented but they will not rush.

Lopez has nice upside for this round. Seems athletic despite his height. said to be signable too. Brewers might have money to spend later, or this will continue last years trend of going cheap.

Thomore was one of my favorites. Would have been nice to see him last until round 3. Still, I've got no objections to Lopez pick. Great to see the Brewers get an upside guy to balance against the two college guys yesterday.

I hope they spend money later, especially since we all know it's not gonna go to Fielder. Would be nice to find another guy like Scarpetta in the later rounds, minus the service time restrictions :-\

Here's Perfect Game's comments on Lopez from the Puerto Rico state preview:

http://www.perfectgame.or...s/View.aspx?article=5614

Lopez, who has been compared by scouts on the island to veteran major-league righthander Javier Vazquez, is the most unusual of Puerto Rican prospects as he is a very projectable pitcher, and yet already has a low-90s fastball and feel for spinning a breaking ball. He could become the highest-drafted pitcher from Puerto Rico since righthander Luis Atilano was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 35th overall selection in 2003.

Lopez is from a region of the island that is best-known for producing positional talent, and not surprisingly the 6-foot-4 righthander is a converted shortstop. He moved to the mound two years ago, when he started concentrating on baseball full-time. Prior to that, he excelled in track and field, volleyball and basketball, in addition to baseball.

One-line report from story as linked:

1. JORGE LOPEZ – rhp, Academia la Milagrosa, Cayey

Very athletic 6-4/180, new to pitching, 89-92 mph FB, good feel for CU, sound delivery, high-ceiling talent.

Not overly surprising, as the Brewers have been targeting both Canadian and Puerto Rican players earlier in the draft the past few years. Really high upside, and a nice blend of polish given his relative inexperience.

And of course the Brewers continue to show interest in the taller, bigger-bodied pitchers.

Time for some bats...

Round 3 is the round I think its worth gambling on a tough sign. Pick still has some protection, and the other options aren't comparable in talent. Take a Will Meyers or Tim Mellville type.

For a guy who will drop and demand in my eyes is Kevin Cron. From what I have read he is a near carbon copy of his older brother CJ at the same age but is expected to ask high

Edit: Well one, wrong about dropping, two spoke to soon lol

NievesNoNO[/b]] to me the high/low floor/ceiling stuff is junk. My question is can the guy play baseball? It is as simple is that.
The floor/ceiling stuff is a descriptor of how well he can/will be able to play baseball. Not sure why it's junk?

I can play baseball. My floor is very low, as is my ceiling. They are arguably the same height.

Ironically, we both have similar floors and ceilings. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Maybe junk was the wrong description. I get the concept, maybe I'm not as advanced in my thinking. If I have a low floor and low ceiling then I'm not a good baseball player. If I have a low floor and but a high ceiling then I'm bad right now but potentially great? If I have a high floor and low ceiling then I'm good now but can't get much better? I don't know I think it leaves too much open to interpretation. To each their own I guess. It kind of sounds like there's some political correctness to using them....me: "Yuni, you're really not a good baseball player" Yuni: Hey, why the hate man. I just have a really low ceiling.
