Official Draft Pick Selection/Signing Thread -- Latest -- Jungmann signs for $2.525M; Bradley signs for $2M; 18th rounder McFarland gets $315K

ROUND 24: Michael Palazzone - RHP
6'2", 190, R/R, University of Georgia

http://images.morris.com/images/athens/mdControlled/cms/2011/04/28/821485664.jpg

(David Manning, Athens Banner-Herald)

SCOUTING REPORT:

(courtesy Perfect Game USA)

Palazzone was picked in the 18th round by the Braves in 2008, just one

round after the Braves took Pope. Though they play on rival college

teams, Palazzone and Pope were teammates on the same East Cobb youth

teams during their high-school years. Palazzone has recovered

sufficiently from both Tommy John surgery in the past and the meltdown

by Georgia’s entire pitching staff in 2010 to become one of the top

starters in the Southeastern Conference this season. He was 8-2, 2.15

through his first 12 starts.

With Palazzone’s best pitch being a changeup, he may lack the true power

pitch to propel him into the top 3-5 rounds, but his three-pitch

arsenal, command and maturity should easily land him in the first 10

rounds.

Chad

Thompson is a RHP with a 6'8'', 215 lb. frame from Trabuco Canyon,

CA who attends El Toro. Chad has an extra tall, great frame and showed

outstanding coordination on the mound for a pitcher his size. He threw

downhill and repeated his delivery well with his fastball sitting 90-94

at the Metrodome. He maintained his velo throughout the outing including

from the stretch and his fastball showed good armside run. Thompson

showed solid offspeed pitches to go with his explosive fastball. Good

action and feel on his splitter. Chad really impressed at the National

Showcase as one of the top pitchers in the 2009 class. Highest level

pitching prospect.

SCOUTING REPORT:

Scouts have been impressed with the way senior Doug Elliot has handled UConn's pitching staff, which brought him into draft consideration. Elliot stepped into the starting job after incumbent catcher Joe Pavone tore his ACL in the preseason, and he was hitting .320/.371/.389 through 54 games. Elliot is a contact hitter with good receiving skills and an average arm.

SCOUTING REPORT:

(courtesy Baseball America)

Lefty Elliott Glynn has been in UConn's weekend rotation since his freshman year, and he spent his first two seasons as a two-way player before concentrating on pitching full-time. He was drafted in the 46th round out of high school in Long Beach in 2007, and in the 49th round last year. He doesn't show as much velocity as Nappo, sitting at 86-88 mph with good sink, and he throws two breaking balls. Glynn has a 6-foot-1, 175-pound build and relies on his feel for pitching.
