From the day that Jungmann set foot on campus at Texas as a freshman, it was a given that he would emerge as one of the greats at a storied program known for churning out a steady stream of top-notch pitching prospects through the years. Almost three years later, the 6-foot-6 righthander has been everything almost everyone expected he would be. He went 11-3, 3.00 as a freshman (including 3-0, 0.59 in 17 IP in the 2009 College World Series) and 8-3, 2.03 as a sophomore, before ratcheting up his game to another level this spring. Through his first 12 starts, he was 11-0, 0.92 and had limited opposing hitters to a .160 batting average.

 

Jungmann began the season with a bang, pitching complete-game shutouts in his first two starts; his lone non-decision came in a 1-0, 15-inning Texas win over Oklahoma State, where he worked the first nine innings. Jungmann’s dominance over three years at the college level is very much in keeping with the dominance he exhibited in four years at two Texas high schools. In his year-by-year progression at Rogers High, he went 12-2, 0.90 with 138 strikeouts in 70 innings as a freshman for the Texas 2-A quarter-finalist; as a sophomore, he went 10-1, 0.84 with 145 K’s in 84 innings for the state semi-finalist; as a junior, he led his team to a state championship by going 13-0, 0.84 with 142 strikeouts in 85 innings.

 

Jungmann elected to transfer to Georgetown High for his senior year to play against a faster level of competition, and was equally dominant. He closed out a legendary prep career by going 14-0, 0.77 with 153 strikeouts in 85 innings, while earning Texas 5-A pitcher-of-the-year honors. His remarkable high-school career record: 47-3, 0.72 with 578 strikeouts in 324 innings. Despite those impressive credentials, Jungmann was drafted no higher than the 24th round in 2008. He most likely would have been taken in the first round had he not made it abundantly clear to scouts in advance that he was bent on becoming the next pitching great at the University of Texas, which has churned out 16 first-round arms through the years (10 first-rounders, six supplemental first-rounders).

 

Jungmann is a power pitcher with a fastball that sits at 93-95 mph, peaks at 98 and has good sinking action. But he is not considered one of the premier strikeout pitchers in a very deep class of college arms in this year’s draft. Throughout his Longhorns career, Jungmann has fanned 320 hitters in 323 innings, slightly less than a hitter an inning. In high-school, his career strikeout total of 578, while impressive, still left him far short of the state and national record of 842, set from 1970-73 by Houston lefthander David Clyde, the No. 1 pick in the 1973 draft. Jungmann has a very high ceiling, though, when combining his physical projection and competitive approach, along with a solid three-pitch mix that includes a 12-to-6 shaped curve with explosive downward action and an occasional changeup. If anything, he’s viewed as one of the more complete college pitchers in this year’s draft. He should also develop into a significant innings-eater at the big-league level, especially with the strength gains he has made throughout his career at Texas.

 

Jungmann chose not to pitch in summer-league competition after both his freshman and sophomore years, in favor of staying close to home to add strength to his long, lean frame and build up stamina, and also improve his off-speed pitches. In the process, he has gone from a skinny, 180-pound freshman to a powerfully-built, 220-pounder as a junior. Over the course of the last year, he has improved his workload from an average of seven innings per start as a sophomore to eight as a junior.

 

If there is a knock on Jungmann, it’s his high-effort delivery with noticeable violence in his upper half. He has a distinct downward head jerk at the point of release, creating an undesired bobbing motion. But he gains an advantage from his unique, deceptive delivery as his arm speed accelerates from the top of his throwing arc. Scouts have long said he will need to simplify his mechanics as he advances, but Jungmann has never had command issues or trouble repeating his delivery, or even the hint of a sore arm. In fact, he has actually thrown more quality strikes this year than ever before. In his first 98 innings for the Longhorns, he had walked 19 while serving up only 54 hits. Over his first two years at Texas, he averaged more than a walk every three innings. Given his extremely projectable frame, superior athleticism and impeccable track record, Jungmann is a slam dunk to become the latest Longhorns pitcher to be selected in the first round.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Bradley never truly asserted himself as a legitimate high-end prospect for the 2011 draft, or was even on the radar of many clubs, until last summer at the Cape Cod League all-star game. He worked in only one inning, but many of the close to 100 scouts in attendance thought he had the best arm in the contest. Not only did Bradley exhibit a very easy, fluid arm action with sound mechanics, but he was the only pitcher with above-average stuff who commanded everything in his arsenal. His fastball was a steady 93-94 mph, and he complemented it with a solid curve and change. Bradley subsequently went on to lead the Cape League in strikeouts, with 44 in 41 innings, while walking just six. His strikeout total held up as the league’s best, even as he departed the Cape with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

 

Prior to his all-star moment, Bradley had achieved relatively modest success in his career, and had pitched largely in obscurity. He went undrafted out of an Alabama high school in 2008, and went just 2-3, 6.65 as a freshman at Georgia Tech, though he struck out 49 in 44 innings. He moved into a starting role for the Yellow Jackets as a sophomore, but his 9-5, 4.83 record, along with 99 strikeouts in 91 innings, hardly measured up to the 9-4, 2.96 record and team-leading 118 strikeout total authored by righthander Deck McGuire, who went on to become the seventh overall pick in the 2010 draft. Even this year, with all the notoriety he has received since last summer’s breakthrough moment on the Cape, he has been overshadowed in the Georgia Tech rotation again by righthander Mark Pope, who has gone a tidy 10-2, 1.27 though his first 12 starts. Pope has been the Friday starter for Tech and Bradley the Saturday guy, and he has gone an impressive 6-2, 2.63 with 24 walks and a team-high 83 strikeouts in his first 75 innings.

 

Make no mistake, though, those coaches and scouts who have watched Bradley closely over the last two years, particularly early in his career at Georgia Tech, knew he was always a hidden gem whose time to shine would come. That will undoubtedly happen in June, when he is expected to be one of the top 3-4 picks in the draft, possibly even the first college lefthander selected.

 

It was evident two summers ago, when Bradley pitched in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League that he was something special. He made only three starts in the league before a nagging oblique strain forced him to return home, but at least one scout who tracked the league believed the tall, broad-shouldered southpaw would have been the league’s top prospect if he had been healthy all summer. His record (0-1, 5.54 in 17 IP) was marred by a seven-run outburst in one inning in his last start. Bradley has only refined his raw stuff since, and worked with a 91-94 mph fastball, 81-84 curve and low-80s changeup in most of his outings this spring. His smooth delivery and refined mechanics, along with his ability to command all his pitches has finally set him apart from other college arms and he will be duly rewarded for his quiet rise up the prospect ranks in this year’s draft.

Lopez is a RHP with a 6-4 175 lb. frame from Cayey, PR who attends

Caguas Military Academy. Slender young build, should gain strength but

not much weight. Slow paced low effort delivery, high 3/4's release

point, pulls off some on release, very long and loose arm, good use of

his lower half. Fastball to 91 mph, velo comes easy. Flashes hard

curveball spin when on top of the ball, change up shows nice sink and

should be thrown more. Very nice young pitching prospect who should

keep improving.

Though he has yet to post a winning season in college, Gagnon has improved each year at Long Beach, lowering his ERA from 6.28 to 3.28 to 2.80. He showed good feel for pitching in the Cape Cod League last summer, leading the circuit with five wins, and he carried that momentum into his junior year. Gagnon has a prototypical 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame and an easy arm action, but his delivery can get a bit too mechanical at times, and scouts would like to see him loosen up and just throw. He pitches heavily off a lively 90-93 mph fastball that has peaked at 94 this spring, and he pounds both sides of the strike zone with it. Gagnon has worked to improve his feel for his breaking stuff, as he throws both a slider and a curveball, and for much of his career they tended to blend into each other. At his best, he shows a 79-82 hammer curveball and an 82-85 slider, each with distinct shapes. His 82-85 changeup is also an average pitch. Gagnon is still learning to put hitters away with his secondary stuff (he has 183 strikeouts in 245 career innings) and still learning to win, but he has the ingredients to be a workhorse mid- to late-rotation starter in the big leagues.

Ramirez is a 2008 1B/P with a 6'3'', 223 lb. frame from Anaheim, CA who

attends Katella HS. He has a big framed build with plus strength but

also with some softness in his middle that needs to be firmed up.

Ramirez has all the actions of a natural hitter and his strength gives

huge power potential. He hits with a very relaxed set up and an easy

swing that is driven by his strong hands. His timing is right on with

his hands most of the time and he squares up and hits the ball very

hard, especially when he can get an inside pitch. Ramirez does tend to

leak his hips out early, which hurts his power to the opposite field,

but he still has the hand strength/quickness to handle outside pitches.

Ramirez also shows the ability to be a two-way player at the college

level. His pitching mechanics are a bit raw but he throws in the upper

80's from the left side with a a feel for a change up and that's a good

starting point for a southpaw. The key for Ramirez is going to be

getting his big body under control; he has the tools to be an impact

bat.

Reed has created mixed opinions among Texas area scouts this spring.

Those who buy into his strong 6-foot, 210-pound body and tools think he

could fit in the second or third rounds, while others who worry about

his lack of polish see him as more of a sixth- to 10th-rounder. His

proponents think he profiles nicely as a right fielder who swings the

bat with authority from the right side of the plate and backs up his raw

power with plus speed and arm strength. Others think he has a mature,

maxed-out frame and does everything with a lot of effort, and that he's a

fringe to average runner. Reed also pitches, reaching 90 mph with his

fastball, and he'll see action as a two-way player if he attends

Mississippi. It may take second-round money to sign him away from Ole

Miss, for whom his father Benton played football en route to a brief NFL

career.

Projectable 6-foot-6, 185-pound righthander Danny Keller was one of the stars of November's Jesse Flores Memorial All-Star Game, showing a 91-92 mph two-seam fastball and a sharp three-quarters curve. The breaking ball had less power at February's MLB Urban Youth Invitational, and his feel for pitching did not impress scouts as the spring progressed. He struggled to throw strikes, thanks in part to an unrefined delivery that includes some head violence. He has arm strength—he topped out at 93 this spring—and upside, and a club could take a shot at him as high as the fifth- to seventh-round range, though he seems to fit better a few rounds later than that. He is committed to Cal State Northridge.

Goforth showed mid-90s velocity and thrived in a set-up role as a

freshman in 2009, striking out 36 in 35 innings. He was a draft-eligible

sophomore last season and imploded when he moved into a part-time

starting role, with an 8.41 ERA. He couldn't throw his secondary pitches

for strikes, but remedied that in 2011 when he added a cut fastball.

Goforth's four-seamer still has plenty of giddy-up, at times reaching 97

mph even when he starts. He can throw strikes with the cutter, which

sits 88-92 mph and gives him a power pitch with life. His four-seam

fastball tends to flatten out. He still throws a curveball and changeup

on occasion, but his approach is mostly to overpower hitters. He's

thrown a lot more strikes this year thanks in large part to the cutter,

and should be able to pitch mostly off his fastball and cutter as a pro

reliever. A 31st-round pick a year ago, Goforth should go out in the

fifth-round range this season.

Canada's best position prospect is third baseman Dustin Houle, who has an average body at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. He has a compact, line-drive swing from the right side of the plate and has shown he can catch up to quality velocity. He sometimes has a little bit of a bat wrap, and scouts question whether he'll be able to hit enough to stay at the hot corner. Some would like to convert Houle to catcher because of his soft hands, strong arm and dirtbag mentality. Houle is also one of the youngest players in this year's high school class, as he won't turn 18 until November.

Lefthander Mike Strong has been Oklahoma State's best starter in each of his two seasons since transferring from Iowa Western CC. Though he's just 6 feet and 187 pounds, he has a quick arm that produces an 88-92 mph fastball and a hard curveball. He throws strikes and has a chance to start in pro ball, though he profiles better as a reliever. He was selected in the last two drafts, by the White Sox in the 25th round in 2009 and by the Athletics in the 22nd round last year.

Toledo is long, thin, and pretty lithely built, with a 6'3" 165 lb. frame that clearly is still developing. With his present day stuff and physical projectability, not to mention his easy arm stroke, Toledo is one of the most projectable right handers in the '07 high school draft class. He was ranked #27 among PG National Top 85 pitchers and in time will blow by a number of those that were ranked ahead of him. No player has a limitless ceiling, but Toledo's is about as high as you can imagine for a 6'3" right hander. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot and makes a clean circle on the backside of his arm action. Toledo's arm is loose and his delivery is free and easy. He maintains good rhythm in his slightly cross body delivery and uses very little effort. Toledo's 89-92 mph fastball obviously has good present day velocity but even in the low 90s it can still be called sneaky. The ball is so easy out of his hand, it is not tough to project 4-5 more mph in the not too distant future, depending on his physical strength and body development. Toledo showed plus movement and good sink with his fastball and used both sides of the plate well. He complemented the heater with a big, two-plane 73 mph curveball that had good spin. That pitch has the makings of an above average breaking ball. Toldeo's best secondary pitch is his 78-81 mph change-up, thrown with plus arm speed. He has plus plus feel of that pitch and he showed that he could pitch with it too.

 

The only thing that Toledo needs is more physical development, which naturally will happen. His stuff is very good and in the future should develop into near plus stuff across the board. Clearly he is a top end D1 prospect and there are some that will say he needs to go to school to develop that body. However, a premium may be placed on him based upon his present day stuff and easy projectability, making Toledo one that may rise awfully high up the draft lists this spring.

Moye is a right handed pitcher from Alpharetta, Georgia, with a 6'5'', 180 lb. frame. He is a lean and

athletic pitcher with a very projectable body. On the mound he throws

from a high 3/4 arm slot with solid arm speed. Moye has a balanced and

online delivery with minimal effort. He has good control of all his

pitches, including a sinking fastball that topped out at 86 mph. With

his size and arm, we think he will be an easy 90 mph guy in the future.

He also mixes in a sharp curveball with depth at 72 mph, and shows a

feel for his changeup at 76 mph. Moye is very athletic on the mound,

and fields his position.

McMahan is a C with a 6'0'', 192 lb. frame from Windermere, FL. He has a solid present build with some

strength and maturity. He has good catching tools and is a quiet

receiver with strong hands and good balance. McMahan threw a very

strong 80 mph in drills and had a best pop time of 1.92 in game

situations, not in drills. He tended to be inconsistent in his overall

defensive approach and looked best when he was keeping things simple and

not trying to do too much. Offensively, McMahan hits out of a spread,

balanced stance with busy hands to start his swing and some wrapping

action. He has strong hands and gets the bat going pretty well with

some bat speed and line drive type of power. McMahan showed the ability

to get the bat head to the ball against high velocity pitching,

although he tends to get long at times. He has hitting potential,

especially for a catcher. McMahan is an outstanding student.
