Final: Wisconsin 4, @Dayton 1

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
DAYTON, OH – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three times in the first inning and once in the second inning Sunday at Fifth Third Field at Dayton. That was more than enough for pitchers Brooks Hall, Eric Marzec, and Greg Holle. Wisconsin picked up a 4-1 win over the Dayton Dragons, ended a long road trip with a victory, and tightened the first half Western Division playoff picture.
For the second game in a row, the Rattlers (30-27) jumped out in front in the first inning. The first three Wisconsin hitters reached to load the bases. Greg Hopkins followed with a two-run single. Cody Hawn grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to get another run home for a 3-0 lead.

A two-out RBI double by Nick Shaw in the top of the second inning gave the Rattlers a 4-0 lead.

Hall kept the Dragons off the scoreboard through four innings. But, a one out walk to Chris Berset in the fifth was followed by an RBI double off the bat of Devin Lohman to pull the Dragons (28-29) to within 4-1.
Hall responded by striking out Theo Bowe and making a nifty play on a hard hit grounder by Jefry Sierra to get out of the fifth with no more damage. Hall retired Dayton in order in the sixth to end his day. He went six innings, allowed one run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Marzec worked two scoreless innings to get the game to the ninth inning for closer Holle.

Holle retired the first two batters he faced in the inning. But, Frank Pfister dropped in a broken bat single to center and Chris Breset’s routine grounder to first took a bad bounce over the head of first baseman Hawn. Holle regrouped and got Lohman, the tying run at the plate, to ground out to short to end the game.

Wisconsin ended their road trip with a 5-8 record. But, they won three of the final four games on the trip.

The Rattlers moved to within a game of Quad Cities for the First Half Western Division Wild Card with 13 games remaining. Wisconsin is currently tied with Peoria at 30-27 for third place in the West. Quad Cities is 31-27. Both Peoria and Quad Cities lost on Sunday to allow the Rattlers to move a little closer in the playoff chase.
The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday before starting a six-game homestand on Tuesday night. The Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and the defending Midwest League champions, will make their first ever appearance at Time Warner Cable Field on Tuesday.

Jimmy Nelson (1-5, 5.68) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Mike Goodnight (4-3, 2.37) is set to start for the Captains. Game time is 7:05pm.
Tuesday is the start of the Miller Summer Kickoff at Time Warner Cable Field. There will be $1 Miller products during the entire six-game homestand. Tuesday is also a 105.7WAPL Bang for Your Buck Night with soda and hot dogs for $1, too.

Milk Source presents “Salute To Cows” on Tuesday as well to help the Rattlers celebrate Dairy Month in America’s Dairyland. The first 1,000 fans to attend Tuesday’s game will receive a cup and spoon from Milk Source.

If you can’t make it out to the game, you can tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm.

Perhaps Hall learned that A-ball hitters will chase balls out of the strike zone, because he threw fewer strikes (58 in 95 pitches) but got more strikeouts. Shaw had three hits, Reggie Keen had two, and Hawn walked three times. Yadiel Rivera was 1-3 with a walk but committed his ninth error.

Final: Daytona 10, @Brevard County 4

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- The Brevard County Manatees committed five errors that led to five unearned runs for the Daytona Cubs as the 'Tees fell 10-4 on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Manatees (21-36) starting pitcher Maverick Lasker went just 2 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out two.

The Cubs (41-16) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Manatees cut it in half in the bottom of the second on a solo homer by Brock Kjeldgaard.

Daytona came back in the third and scored three runs - all with two outs - with two scoring on a fielding error by Hunter Morris.

Brevard County cut Daytona's lead again in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a two-run homer by Scooter Gennett that made it a 5-3 game.

That would be as close as the Manatees would get as Daytona scored five more times, with three of the runs being unearned.

Kjeldgaard would add to his home run total again in the ninth as he hit a solo shot for his 14th of the season. It was Kjeldgaard's fourth two-homer game of the season and second straight two-homer game.

Of the 14 homers that Kjeldgaard has hit this season, 11 of them have come since May 17. He is five homers away from breaking the Manatees single-season mark of 18, set by Jose Santos in 2001.

Brevard County will take on Daytona one more time on the road, Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Kyle Heckathorn (4-5, 4.66) will take the mound for the Manatees, while the Cubs will send Jeffrey Lorick (4-1, 3.75) to the hill.

The 'Tees will then have an off day on Tuesday and then play host to the Dunedin Blue Jays for two games on Wednesday and Thursday.

After Lasker backslid, Adrian Rosario worked the next 2.1 innings and let in two more runs (one earned). Gennett and Morris each committed two errors. On the bright side, nice to see the alien inhabiting Brock Kjeldgaard's body still lives; that's pretty silly stuff. Mike Brownstein added a double and walk, but no one else contributed much of anything: Kentrail Davis, Morris, and D'Vontrey Richardson were all 0-4, though Richardson did pick up another outfield assist. Khris Davis and Shawn Zarraga got the night off.

Final: Nashville 7, @New Orleans 1

Nashville Sounds

METAIRIE, La. - Third baseman Taylor Green's grand slam was part of a six-run first inning that paved the way to a 7-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs at Zephyr Fieldon Sunday evening.

Winners of four in a row, Nashville (24-32) has now held New Orleans to one run for the second consecutive night and in six of the seven victories this season.

Sounds starter Amaury Rivas (4-5) looked sharp in his team-leading sixth quality start, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four in six innings. The win was Rivas' first in his last eight starts, leading back to April 22. In three starts against New Orleans this season, the 25-year old right-hander has picked up three wins while posting a 1.35 ERA (3er/20ip).

Edwin Maysonet went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Jordan Brown added two hits.

The Sounds quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning on starting pitcher Tom Koehler. Brandon Boggs doubled home Brown for the first run, and later scored on a Maysonet bunt single. After Caleb Gindl was issued a two-out walk to load the bases, Green unloaded a grand slam over the wall in center field [audio]. The grand slam was Nashville's first this season and Green's seventh long ball this year.

Brendan Katin hit Nashville's last grand slam last season against New Orleans on August 29, 2010 at Greer Stadium.

The Zephyrs scored their lone run back in the next frame, as center fielder Bryan Petersen singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Matt Dominguez.

The Sounds' final run of the contest came in the top of eighth inning as Gindl singled home Maysonet.

Gindl (six games) and Green (five games) each extended their respective hitting streaks to tie their previous season highs.

Zack Segovia added two scoreless innings. Donovan Hand fanned one in one scoreless frame.

In the loss, Koehler (5-2) pitched five scoreless innings for the loss after the Sounds scored six on the right-hander in the opening frame.

The Sounds and Zephyrs will continue their series with Monday's 7:00 pm CT contest at Zephyr Field. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (0-4, 4.70) looks for his first win from the mound against left-hander Sean West (0-2, 8.62).

Glad to see the Sounds benefit a little more from Green's slam than the Marlins did from Brett Hayes'. Green is now slugging .484--not too shabby. As Toby pointed out earlier today, the longer Green stays hot and Casey McGehee cold, the more interesting things become. Rivas allowed a run in six innings on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts; he threw 110 pitches and 64 strikes. Brown also walked. Mat Gamel was 0-3 with a walk.

Final: @Mobile 4, Huntsville 0

Michael Fiers started and was stretched out to 74 pitches, but despite throwing 2/3 strikes (51) he only made it four innings. He only gave up four hits and a walk while striking out five but still allowed three runs. Lots of strikeouts in general for the Stars staff: Roque Mercedes and Rob Wooten each had two in an inning and Lucas Luetge three in two. Didn't really matter because the Stars struck out 13 times themselves and had only five hits: singles by Logan Schafer, Andy Gonzalez, Steffan Wilson, and Sergio Miranda, plus a pinch hit by Erik Komatsu. Lee Haydel and Sean Halton were 0-4.

Fiers unfortunately bunched most of his baserunners together:

Mobile Bottom of the 2nd
  • Marc Krauss doubles (13) on a fly ball to right fielder Brandon Jones.
  • Alfredo Marte grounds out, second baseman Sergio Miranda to first baseman Sean Halton. Marc Krauss to 3rd.
  • Niko Gallego walks.
  • Jarrod Parker called out on strikes.
  • Jacob Elmore doubles (6) on a fly ball to left fielder Lee Haydel. Marc Krauss scores. Niko Gallego scores.
  • A. J. Pollock singles on a line drive to center fielder Logan Schafer. Jacob Elmore scores.
  • Paul Goldschmidt strikes out swinging.

Ashley Marshall/Special to MLB.com

Brock Kjeldgaard is on pace for a career year after his second two-homer effort in as many nights. But that means little to the Brewers outfield prospect if his team is not winning.

Kjeldgaard launched a pair of solo shots Sunday, giving him six homers in his last nine games, but the Brevard County Manatees were beaten by the Daytona Cubs, 10-4.

"I can't complain right now. It's nice to have a little success here, but tonight was tough," he said after the Manatees lost for the fifth time in six games. "This isn't the easiest league to hit in and I started the year pretty slow."

The former 34th-round Draft pick has 14 homers in 49 games, one behind Dunedin's Brad Glenn for the Florida State League lead. He slugged 17 homers over 132 contests in 2010, his first season with Brevard County, after hitting 20 for Class A Wisconsin the year before.

"I don't think about that stuff. I try to go day-to-day and at-bat to at-bat," Kjeldgaard said. "You know when you're doing well."

On Sunday, the 25-year-old outfielder homered leading off the second inning against Cubs starter Dae-Eun Rhee. After being hit by a pitch in the fourth and striking out to end the sixth, Kjeldgaard opened the ninth with another longball against Jeffry Antigua.

"In my first at-bat, he tried to throw me an 0-1 fastball away, but it was right over the plate and I hit it well. There was a little breeze blowing out to right field, too," the Iowa native said. "Then in the ninth, we were down pretty big and I got a 3-1 fastball and I was able to put a good swing on it."

Both balls were hit to the opposite field, but Kjeldgaard said he would rather go with the pitch than try to guess whether he is going to be pitched inside or not.

"I don't try to think about it too much. If I start looking to pull the ball, I get jammed too often," he said. "I just try to stay relaxed, react to pitches and make adjustments."

Kjeldgaard attributed his recent success to minor tweaks in his approach at the plate.

"The past three weeks, I have been making a few adjustments with our hitting coach here and the roving hitting instructor who was in town," he said. "Since then, I have been clicking and seeing the ball better and getting ready on time.

"I'm starting my hands back a little bit more now and removing some excess movement, and these few adjustments have helped quite a bit. A lot of my success is down to my instructors."

Batting .432 with 10 RBIs and 10 runs over his last 10 games, the Alberta native is looking to put his slow start behind him.

"Hitting in baseball is contagious. When you hit, your team hits. When you get going, you want to keep it going, and when you have success, you don't want to stop," he said. "Your confidence is high and it carries over into other games."

Manatees' miscues costly in loss to Daytona

by Mark DeCotis, Florida Today

The Brevard County Manatees gave and the Daytona Beach Cubs graciously accepted, taking advantage of five errors and other miscues to score a 10-4 victory on Sunday at Space Coast Stadium.

Daytona Beach improved to a Class A Florida State League-best 41-16, breaking a three-game losing streak, while the Manatees fell to an FSL-worst 21-36.

An announced gathering of 1,037 bore witness.

The teams conclude their three-game series at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central) in Daytona Beach. The Manatees are off Tuesday before opening a two-game series against visiting Dunedin Wednesday evening.

The Cubs, whose record is among the best in all of professional baseball, banged out 12 hits and put at least one runner on in every inning but the ninth, while the Manatees obliged by playing sloppy defense, tossing three wild pitches, issuing five walks and hitting a batter.

"They (Daytona) are a very good club," Manatees manager Jeff Isom said. "They will make you pay for any mistakes that you give, and tonight was exactly what happened.

"You can't go out there and commit five errors and expect to win and have less amount of hits than what you're making by errors.

"It just wasn't a sharp game for us. It's concerning. It's not how we've been playing. It's not what we're all about. When you're committing that many mistakes, giving teams too many opportunities, it's not a good thing and it's something that will be addressed."

The Manatees managed only four hits, two of them solo home runs by Brock Kjeldgaard for his 13th and 14th of the season, good for second in the league. They were his fourth in his past two games.

All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett added a two-run homer in the third inning for his second of the season to cut an early Daytona Beach lead to 5-3 but the hosts could get no closer.

The Manatees are 1-8 against the Cubs this season.
