Visiting Milwaukee

Joseph

If it's nice out, grab a beer at The Yard at The Ironhorse Hotel. It's a great patio in a cool Harley themed hotel.

Leon's Frozen Custard is also a must.

Also, while I think you should tailgate, if you decide not to, there are a few bars near your hotel that have shuttle busses that will take you to the game. I know The Milwaukee Brat House has one--it's on Old World Third St. just a few blocks south of Aloft. AJ Bombers might too, but I'm not sure of that.

Mo's Irish Pub on Wisconsin Ave definitely does. I rode it to the San Fran games.

I strongly suggest Great Lakes Distillery at 616 West Virginia Street Milwaukee, WI 53204

http://www.greatlakesdistillery.com/tours.htm

Wisconsin's first distillery since prohibition, makers of vodka, gin, rum, absinthe (yes, real absinthe), brandy and whiskey. It's the happiest place in Wisconsin, but, I recommend a Thursday, Friday, or early Saturday tour (2pm), the rest of the day on Saturday can get pretty crazy. I work there, I can hook you up with a few of the best cocktails you will ever have in your life.

Lots of great food, the Harley Museum, and the Iron Horse all a stones throw from the distillery.

Wisconsin's largest distillation museum is also on premise.

Your stuff is available in elkhorn! I'm gonna have to try some. Quick question, will i be able to find the Rum down by me(I'm assuming the Whiskey is available here, or else i'll cry)? The maple syrup has me intrigued.

I would think almost for sure by now the rum is down there, it's been out a year. If you can find a bottle of "batch 10" or later, do that, it's really coming along nicely now. Fun note, it's named Roaring Dan's Rum after the only man charged with piracy in the great lake's history, "Roaring" Dan Seavey. It's a very subtle maple syrup flavor, but good.

The whiskey just came out a month ago, don't know how far reaching it has gotten yet.

I second this. InsomniacInkRoss, I just opened a CrossFit gym right accross the roundabout from the Great Lakes Distillery. It's getting to be an awesome neighborhood!

I hate to let this get too far off track, but we are talking about a great up and coming area of town to visit. Where is the gym? There is a tapas restaurant going in on the SW corner of 6th and Virginia as well (which should be awesome) and should be open sooner than later.

There is something cool going in the top level of the Distillery as well, but it won't be for a few months yet.

The gym is at 408 W. Florida St., just east of the Ironhorse. Stop by, we offer neighbor discounts! We're planning a post-workout brewery tour at the Milwaukee Brewing Company this Friday, and we want to do the same at Great Lakes sometime in the next couple weeks. That's the kind of gym we are. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif If you're interested, our website is brewcitycrossfit.com

I ran by that tapas place the other day and was wondering when it would be open. It looks pretty awesome.

Huh... I live in the 3rd ward and I had no idea the gym was there. I'm a little out of shape at the moment but I've always wanted to try Crossfit.
Yikes - the first time I read hurricanecrush's post above, I saw "3rd world" instead of "3rd ward." Oops.

Sorry; carry on. Joseph, have a great time in Milwaukee (except perhaps the on-field results).

We just opened less than a month ago. Stop by any time for a workout and see if you like it. You can send me a private message if you want more info (I don't mean to hijack this thread!). The website is brewcitycrossfit.com

Yes have some decent seats already thank goodness. Hard to get tickets to a first place team!

Nah, the Brewers have sold well for a few years now on weekends. Has little to do with being in first place. As long as they had a winning record this year they would draw well.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

So if you don't mind sharing, Joseph, where are you sitting? I don't mean exact seats so we can badger you (get it? Badger?), but field, loge, club or terrace.

Also, not to nit pick but I thought the Leinie's "craft" beer tasting was next Friday. The Brewers' promotion schedule also indicates that the first 30,000 fans on Friday 7/8 will receive Ryan Braun rally towels. Between that, the Negro Leagues tribute night on Saturday 7/9, the bobble on Sunday 7/10, and the mere fact that it's a heart-of-summer weekend series, I'd expect large crowds.

Ooh, good for you. The hawing games are Thursday and Sunday, so I won't see you at all (and we don't have field tickets). I'll let others chime in for themselves.

If you get a Ryan Braun rally towel Friday and don't want it, I'll bet someone from here would take it off your hands! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I'd be happy to nab a few, got four people all told at the games. I usually just don't take the giveaways in parks I'm visiting and try to leave those for the home fans, but I wouldn't mind grabbing them if you guys would like em. I dunno what they are giving away either day so if its something anyone wants, let me know.

Well, I won't lie: if giving me one of the towels would take your mind off how tonight's game ended for the Reds, I'll take one. PM me if you have one available and I'll send you my postal address.

And as happy as I am for the Brewers tonight, I am genuinely sorry for you. It sucks to see your team blow a game on the road. I have been in that position as a fan.

I had a helluva good time in your fair town, despite the blown save by Coco on Friday night. I know you guys all loved that, considering how much love was displayed for him as he entered the game. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Miller Park is quite nice, though as some of you said it doesn't have a ton of extra features, that still doesn't make it a bad place at all. What hommages to the past they do have are nice, the statues, the inlaid 'home plate' plaques in the ground around the outside, the history of Milwaukee and area baseball [though it felt really stuck in that weird corner of the park. I didn't even find it the first night]. It was all nice and again the stadium was really fun to watch a game in. We were right behind home plate on Friday night for that inside the park job Rickie laid on us. He's a really good player to watch, hope you guys have him for a while. I had no idea exactly how much Craig Counsell was loved there. I know he was popular and all, but he was maybe the loudest ovation of the night, aside from the walk off win cheers.

Much credit goes to the fans too. You never know what you're going to get at any given time, but every one around was polite and accommodating both nights. We sat next to some very vocal fans the second night and they congratulated us on the win and even inquired if I was doing alright [i was dehydrated from roaming all around all day long and actually missed a couple innings of the game]. All the fans were enthusiastic and into the game. There was almost a football passion amongst them which is not the norm for a lot of fans I've been exposed to. It was nice to see.

As for the city itself....we did a few of the likely 'touristy' things. Of course we did the brewery tour at Miller. I expected a shot glass sample at the end, not a full beer, well....three beer. That was a pleasant surprise and likely a contributor to my dehdration later. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif We ate at a place called Foy's which was right next to the hotel in some Irish group of bars. I wasn't a fan, I couldnt hear the waitress and we had to pay after every round because people apparently just walk out all the time or something. Had a breakfast as a place called corner cafe I think....maybe? Was good. The bloody mary my friend had was garnished with bacon. Very odd, but funny.

Also visited the museum of art, fantastic looking building, and impressive displays inside. Very cool thing to see. Saw the Pabst Mansion, I'm a history nerd as well, so I particularly liked the mansion. Very strange to see it next to that office building or whatever its situated next to now, but still a cool thing for a dork like me.

Really liked the city alot. I had no idea some of the old architecture it possessed and how nice the whole area around my hotel was. Lots of bars, lots of old, well maintained buildings, and just a really nice time all around.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I know I'll be headed back there sometime and will get to more of what was thrown at me as things to do. I really appreciate it.

Also, I have 2 Ryan Braun towels, hawing and bikage77, you guys still want them?
