I wonder why Peralta only threw 81 pitches? That seems awfully low for a AA starting pitcher, especially since he had 54 strikes... The bottom of the 5th didn't seem to be especially stressful for him?

Final: Nashville 6, @New Orleans 1

Nashville Sounds

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip with a 6-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at Zephyr Field.

The win was the third in a row for Nashville (24-31), which continued its recent dominance in New Orleans. The Sounds have won 15 of their last 21 games played at Zephyr Field.

Left-hander Sam Narron (4-2) picked up his team-leading fourth victory by tossing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit ball for the Sounds. With the effort, the lanky southpaw lowered his team-leading ERA to 3.13 through 11 outings. Narron walked three batters and struck out five in his 99-pitch effort and helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 night at the plate.

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Eric Farris drew a one-out walk from New Orleans starter Mariano Gomez and scored when Edwin Maysonet followed with an RBI double to center [audio].

Nashville extended its lead to 3-0 in the third. Narron led off with a single and scored a batter later when Brandon Boggs ripped a double to right. Boggs later scored the visitors' second run of the frame when he hustled home on a Maysonet sacrifice fly to center.

Narron worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth to keep New Orleans off the board. In the fourth, the Z's loaded the bases with two outs before the southpaw escaped the jam by grounding out Jesus Merchan. An inning later, a single and walk gave the home team a pair of baserunners with only one out, but Narron induced an inning-ending double play groundout from former Sounds All-Star Vinny Rottino.

The Sounds left the bases loaded in the sixth against Z's reliever Todd Doolittle, who induced an inning-ending popup from Narron.

The Zephyrs broke up the Sounds' shutout bid in the seventh with a run off reliever Justin James on a two-out Mike Cervanek double.

Nashville put the game on ice with a three-run eighth against Z's reliever Victor Garate, extending the lead to 6-1. Brett Carroll (2-for-4) opened the inning with a double before the next two batters were retired. After Caleb Gindl drew a two-out free pass, Taylor Green launched a run-scoring doubled to left to make it a 4-1 cushion. Pinch-hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte followed with a two-run single center to stretch the visitors' lead to five.

Gomez (0-1) took a loss in his first Triple-A appearance of the season after allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings of action.

The teams continue their series with another 6:00 p.m. matchup on Sunday evening. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (3-5, 4.65) will take the hill for the Sounds and try to end his seven-start winless stretch. He'll face New Orleans right-hander Tom Koehler (5-1, 4.24).

Narron, a career .277 hitter, helped his own cause with two hits. Farris was on three times with a hit and two walks; he stole his sixth base but was caught for the fifth time. Gindl also singled, and Green also walked. Mat Gamel was 0-4. Daniel Ray Herrera worked a scoreless 8th, working around two hits; he faced four righties and one lefty. Robert Hinton pitched a scoreless 9th, walking one.

Final: Brevard County 4, @Daytona 0

Hiram Burgos pitched a gem, tossing seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts; he allowed three hits, a walk, and a hit batter, and posted a 9/2 GO/FO. Santo Manzanillo finished the shutout with two innings, striking out three and allowing two hits and a walk. Anyone know if Brock Kjeldgaard has been down to the crossroads lately? He knocked two more out of the park, giving him six in his last ten games. Hunter Morris and Shea Vucinich also homered. Scooter Gennett perked up with a single and a walk. Kentrail Davis and D'Vontrey Richardson were each 1-4, with Kentrail stealing his 11th base and Richardson being caught for the fifth time. Khris Davis had a rare off night, 0-4 with three strikeouts. Shawn Zarraga was also hitless, except for the pitch that hit him.

Final: DSL Brewers 12, @DSL Mariners 5

Still undefeated! Deivi Mejia had three hits and drove in five runs, Raul Mondesi also had three hits and a walk, wunderkind Orlando Arcia walked three times, Yonki Hernandez singled twice and was hit by a pitch, and Juan de Leon had two hits and a walk. Ruben "Sanchez" Ozuna DH'd and had a hit and a walk. Elvis Rubio, who didn't play yesterday, had a tough afternoon, 0-5 with three punch-outs. Osmel Perez got the win but had a disappointing outing, allowing four runs in five innings. He only allowed six baserunners (five hits and a hit batter; no walks), but allowed two homers. He struck out three. 17-year-old LHP Marcos Padilla had an uneven pro debut, working two innings and allowing an unearned run on a hit and three walks with no strikeouts. Baseball America on Padilla:
In October the Brewers added Marcos Padilla, a skinny 6-foot-2 Dominican lefthander with long limbs and a loose arm. Padilla has an advanced curveball with good depth and a mid-80s fastball that's been up to 89 mph. He's shown some feel for his changeup as well.
A six-run 2nd and five-run 5th were the big innings:

DSL Brewers Top of the 2nd
  • Raul Mondesi walks.

Mobile Game Recap: BayBears Alone in First After 6th Straight Win

MOBILE, Ala. - Patrick Corbin has rattled off 20 consecutive scoreless

innings, just five shy of a BayBears' record as he worked seven frames

on Saturday night at Hank Aaron Stadium to guide the BayBears to a 5-0

victory over the Huntsville Stars.

Corbin (5-2) dealt with some trouble in the top of the second as the

Stars (28-27) loaded the bases with one out. Angel Gonzalez doubled

while Brandon Jones walked in front of an infield single by Martin

Maldonado. Corbin stayed steady with his use of the breaking ball to

record strikeouts on Hainley Statia and Wily Peralta (3-6), keeping

Huntsville off the board.

Huntsville left eight men on base including six in scoring position as

they went 1-for-9 with runners on second and/or third. The BayBears

(32-24) waited until the fourth to score their first run. Paul

Goldschmidt walked with two outs, and Ryan Wheeler busted a double down

the right field line to score Goldschmidt. It was the only run

surrendered by Peralta in five innings as he fanned eight.

Jesus Sanchez replaced Peralta in the sixth and coughed up two solo home

runs. A.J. Pollock banged his fourth with a majestic fly down the right

field line. Wheeler cracked his sixth with a laser to right field,

putting the BayBears up by three.

Huntsville threatened to get closer in the eighth with two hits off Clay

Zavada, but Ryan Cook (S, 4) induced the final out off the bat of

Gonzalez. The BayBears added two runs in the bottom of the eighth as

Marc Krauss and Jake Elmore each drove in a run. Elmore was 3-for-3.

Cook finished the ballgame with a perfect ninth inning.

The BayBears take on the Stars in game two of their five-game series on

Sunday night at 6:05. Right-hander Jarrod Parker (4-4) will start for

the BayBears against fellow righty Michael Fiers (2-1).

Huntsville Box Score

CF Logan Schafer compiled his third multi-hit game (of nine total games played), going 2-4. 1B Sean Halton & Gonzalez each were 1-4 with a double. 3B Steffan Wilson, Jones, & Maldonado were the only other Stars players with hits.

Peralta pitched well, with a final line of 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, & 8 K. He also picked off a baserunner in the 3rd inning. My only guess as to TheCrew07's question about the brevity of his outing was the first-pitch temperature of 101 degrees. Sanchez did not pitch well; he, in fact, pitched terribly. He gave up home runs to two of the first three batters he faced, allowed three ER (four R total), and six hits in two innings of work.

Sadly enough, though, the Stars still would've lost even if Peralta had kept the BayBears off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. The bats never really woke up for Huntsville.

Huntsville Play-by-Play

Beyond just the 2nd inning mentioned in the game story, the Stars had runners reach in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 8th innings. The 8th was probably their best shot to score after the 2nd:

Huntsville Top of the 8th
  • Pitcher Change: Clay Zavada replaces Patrick Corbin, batting 9th.
  • Logan Schafer grounds out, third baseman Ryan Wheeler to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.
  • Steffan Wilson singles on a line drive to left fielder Ollie Linton, deflected by shortstop Taylor Harbin.
  • Erik
Komatsu grounds into a force out, third baseman Ryan Wheeler to second
baseman Jacob Elmore. Steffan Wilson out at 2nd. Erik Komatsu to
    1st.
  • Sean Halton hits a ground-rule double (11) on a fly ball to right field. Erik Komatsu to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Ryan Cook replaces Clay Zavada, batting 9th.
  • Angel Gonzalez lines out to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

Rattlers slug their way past Dayton

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAYTON, OH - Tyler Thornburg was on the hill for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday night at Fifth Third Field in Dayton and the Wisconsin offense helped Thornburg to his fifth win of the season by banging out 14 hits in a 13-2 win over the Dragons. Reggie Keen homered, tripled, and scored three runs and Tyler Roberts drove in four runs for the Rattlers.

Keen got the Rattlers (29-27) off to a flying start. The Wisconsin centerfielder drove the second pitch of the game to the gap in left-center. He was halfway to third by the time the ball was retrieved by leftfielder Jaren Matthews. Then, Matthews dropped the ball. Keen raced for home and beat the relay throw of shortstop Billy Hamilton. The play was ruled a triple and an E-7, but the end result was a 1-0 Wisconsin lead.

Keen got things going again in the third inning. He lined a 3-1 pitch from Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Tuttle to the bleachers in left for a homer and a 2-0 lead.

It appeared that the Rattlers would only get that one run in the third as Tuttle retired the next two batters. Then, Tuttle walked the next three Wisconsin batters to load the bases. Roberts worked the count to 3-2 and drove the next pitch into the right field corner for a three-run double and a 5-0 lead.

Wisconsin kept the offense going in the fourth inning. Greg Hopkins doubled to right with the bases loaded to drive in a pair of runs. Another run scored on the second of five errors committed by the Dragons. Then, Roberts knocked in another run with a single for a 9-0 lead.

Thornburg was on cruise control. The right hander worked around a one out double in the bottom of the fourth to extend his scoreless streak to 23-1/3 innings.

Wisconsin added two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 12-0. Nick Shaw doubled in a run. Cody [Hawn] followed with a two-run single.

The Dragons (28-28) ended Thornburg's scoreless streak at 23-2/3 innings with a one out RBI single by Devin Lohman in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Rattlers starter bounced back with a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

Yadiel Rivera doubled in a run in the top of the seventh and the Rattlers were up 13-1.

The Dragons scored another run in the bottom of the seventh on two-out single by Lohman. Brian Garman relieved Thornburg and got the final out of the inning.

Thornburgh went 6-2/3 innings, allowed two runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out seven. He is now 5-0 on the season.

Wisconsin went down in order in the top of the eighth inning. Before the Wisconsin defenders could head out to their positions for the bottom of the eighth, the umpires called for the tarp. The Fifth Third Field grounds crew got the tarp down just before a hard rain started to fall.

The game was ruled over after a rain delay of 32 minutes.

The Timber Rattlers conclude their 13-day road trip on Sunday afternoon with the final game of their series against the Dragons. Brooks Hall (1-0, 3.94) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Dayton has Tanner Robles (3-4, 5.62) on the mound. Game time is 1:00pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:40pm.

HOME RUN:

WIS:

Reggie Keen (3rd, 0 on in 3rd inning, off Daniel Tuttle, 0 out)

WP: Tyler Thornburg (5-0)

LP: Daniel Tuttle (4-3)

TIME: 2:22 (:32 delay)

ATTN: 8,482

Wisconsin Box ScoreI think you have to call them the T-Bats tonight. Five players with two hits, and all but one position player registered at least one hit. Hopkins was on base three times, adding a walk to his two hits; he scored three times. The Dragons made 5 (!) errors tonight, not exactly helping themselves out.

Wisconsin Play-by-PlayHere's the top of the 3rd inning Chris referenced in his game story:

Wisconsin Top of the 3rd

  • Reggie Keen homers (3) on a fly ball to left field.

I have to say, it's pretty disappointing that the Brewers choose to be so conservative with their prospects. What has Tyler Thornburg really gained from not going to Brevard County?

Sounds pitcher Narron stifles Zephyrs

By Bob Fortus, The Times-Picayune

A fastball to a corner. A change-up to another corner. Mix in an occasional curve.

Nashville starter Sam Narron wasn’t throwing especially hard Saturday night, but he kept the Zephyrs in check, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 6-1 Sounds victory at Zephyr Field.

“My stuff is not going to blow anybody away,’’ said Narron, a 29-year-old left-hander who came into the game with the fifth-best earned run average in the PCL and lowered his ERA to 3.13. “I try to use my defense, and we’ve got a real solid one.’’

“He just kept us off balance,’’ Zephyrs Manager Greg Norton said. “We swung at his pitches. We hit some balls hard, right at the third baseman and shortstop.’’

Narron (4-2) allowed four hits, only one out of the infield. He struck out five batters and walked three. He also contributed on offense, getting two hits and scoring the second Nashville run.

The Sounds jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Eric Farris walked against Mariano Gomez (0-1) with one out. Edwin Maysonet drove Farris home with a double to center field.

Nashville increased the lead to 3-0 in the third. Narron led off with an infield hit and scored on a double to right-center by Brandon Boggs, who went to third base on the throw to the plate. With one out, Maysonet drove home Boggs with a sacrifice fly to center.

Facing reliever Justin James, the Zephyrs made the score 3-1 in the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Ruben Gotay walked with one out and scored on a two-out double by Mike Cervenak.

But the Sounds answered with three runs against reliever Victor Garate in the eighth inning.

Walks put Brett Carroll and Caleb Gindl on base, and Taylor Green drove home Carroll from second with a two-out double to left field. Pinch-hitter Erick Almonte then hit a two-run single.

Narron pitched out of a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the fourth. He got Jesus Merchan to hit into a force play to end the threat.

Narron led off the fifth with a line drive that fooled left fielder Vinny Rottino and went over his head. Center fielder Bryan Petersen, backing up the play, made a perfect throw to third base to retire Narron, who was trying the stretch the double to a triple.

Zephyrs catcher Brad Davis made a strong throw to second to retire Farris on an attempted steal in the seventh inning.

QUICK HITS: Narron pitched in one game in the majors, with Texas in 2004, before missing all of the 2005 season after having Tommy John surgery. In 10 appearances against the Zephyrs, including nine starts, Narron is 3-0.

Gomez, who was making his season debut, allowed seven hits and three runs in five innings. He was making his first professional start since 2007, when he was on Cleveland’s Double-A Akron team. In the past two seasons, Gomez was with the Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett team in the International League. Last season, he went 3-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 30 relief appearances. He was in spring training this year with Detroit before being released March 29. The Marlins signed him April 20.

The series will resume with a game at 6:00 PM tonight. Zephyrs right-hander Tom Koehler (5-1, 4.24 ERA) will pitch against Sounds right-hander Amaury Rivas (3-5, 4.65).

Sounds center fielder Carroll, who played for the Zephyrs in 2009 and 2010, went 2-for-4. He has batted .357 (25-for-70) in his past 20 games, raising his batting average to .276. Carroll ranks second in the PCL in outfield assists with 10, one behind Charlie Blackmon of Colorado Springs.

Ex-Wildcat Burgos shuts down Daytona Cubs

By SEAN KERNAN, Daytona News-Journal Staff Writer

DAYTONA BEACH -- Brevard County Manatees pitcher Hiram Burgos looked like he owned the mound Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound righty dominated the Daytona Cubs, leading the Manatees to a 4-0 shutout over the top team in the Florida State League.

Burgos may have looked like he was at home, because for four years the Jack was his home. The native of Cayey, Puerto Rico, played for Bethune-Cookman from 2006-09, when he went 22-12 for the Wildcats.

"I felt like I was at home. I was excited to be here," Burgos said after the victory. "I looked at the schedule last week and saw I had a chance to pitch here, and I couldn't wait. I look up in the stands here and remember when I would come out to watch these games a few years ago."

A crowd of 4,304 saw Burgos pitch his gem Saturday night.

Burgos was the stopper the Manatees (21-35) had been looking for all season against the Cubs (40-16). Brevard County had lost its first seven games against Daytona.

"I changed speeds and hit the corners," Burgos said after pitching a season-high seven innings. "That's all about pitching. That's what made me successful."

Burgos allowed just three singles and one walk. He struck out six batters, matching his season high in an April 29 no-decision against Dunedin.

Daytona manager Buddy Bailey was impressed by Burgos' outing.

"He stayed on the corners in a game when the umpire had a consistent liberal strike zone," Bailey said. "The umpire didn't change, and he didn't change."

Burgos, a sixth-round draft choice out of B-CU in 2009, improved to 3-3 for the season and dropped his ERA to 3.24.

Offensively, the Manatees had four solo home runs, three of them in the first four innings. Hunter Morris and Brock Kjeldgaard hit homers off of Daytona starter Zac Rosscup, who made his first appearance since May 13.

Shea Vucinich ripped a two-out solo shot off Daytona reliever Matt Loosen in the fourth inning, and Kjeldgaard added his 12th homer of the season in the ninth off reliever Jordan Latham.

Daytona, which boasts the FSL's most potent offense, was shut out for just the second time this season. Daytona went in the game leading the FSL in team batting (.279), home runs (48) and RBIs (268).

But with Evan Crawford, the league's top hitter (.345), not in the starting lineup, the rest of Daytona's batters didn't pick up the slack.

Daytona managed to hit just five balls into the outfield against Burgos.

"That's when you know you're hitting your spots and have command of all your pitches," Burgos said. "It's my best start (of my pro career) because it was against a very good hitting team. Those are the teams you want to face, because you want to be challenged."

The Manatees and Cubs play at 5:05 PM today in Viera (4:05 Central) and return to the Jack for a 7:05 PM (6:05 Central) Monday contest.
