Cut Nieves and Bring Back George Thread

Verified Member
I think a pretty good rule of thumb is, when your backup catcher is so bad that you actually remove him/pinch hit for him as you would a pitcher later on in the game, when you've only got one other catcher on your roster, it's probably time for him to go.

True, but I'd rather have to use a PH for my #2 catcher than have to put my starter in as a defensive replacement for my #2 catcher.

I really don't get why Melvin is still dinking around with Nieves on the big league roster. Kottaras is killing the ball and our bottom lineup is terrible whenever Nieves is in. Has he ever finished a game when he has started? It seems like Lucroy always ends up pinch hitting for him anyway. The answer is so simple, but the Brewers seem to be intentionally obstinate about it.

What are the chances that Melvin and Roenicke are not aware that Kottaras is down there beating the he** out of the ball? Can we all email Haudricourt and plead with him to ask Roenicke in his next presser what is up with Nieves being on the roster? Not that Kottaras is a huge HR threat ... but his bat on the bench could win a a ballgame or two this year and his bat replacing Nieves every 5th day could win a few more. Nieves is costing us at this point... friendship with Wolf or not.

This doesn't make sense.

Invader3K[/b]]I'm sure Melvin reviews the MiLB stat lines regularly. Roenicke maybe doesn't want to upset the clubhouse balance right now, or something.
Perhaps, but at what point does the rest of the club get upset that a good high school player can outperform a guy they run out there twice a week.

When I initially saw your username I was thinking "wow, he REALLY wants Nieves off the roster." NoNO!

Yeah, the mindset that we seem to be taking is that we're winning, so why tinker with the roster. Which I don't agree with at all. Even the best teams are always looking for ways to improve to stay ahead of the other clubs that are also looking to improve. This apparent paranoia that Wil Nieves is somehow essential for the balance of this roster is just weird.

To be honest I like leaving Kotteras in AAA for now. I've always liked his at bats and offensive potential, and it's nice to see him having his best season. I'd wait and call him up perhaps to DH or after September 1st as an extra bat

if he's not going to play, then I like him getting at bats now. At some point we'll need him, and I'd rather have him come in with extra confidence from game hitting than BP hitting.

If it's not Gamel called up this weekend (Boston), then I'd call up Kotteras to DH. We need someone though, preferably a lefty

I guess I don't really understand that. Sure, we could use George in September, but we could also use him right now every 5th day. We are definitely in win now mode, right?

Granted, he will lose AB's, but with how RR has been willing to hit his 2nd catcher, he'd be a very typical pinch-hitting option, especially late in games when the pop on his bat would be nice to have.

I agree. Not only is he better but he would be our biggest HR threat on the bench.

Pirates have lost Snyder possibly for the season and Doumit possibly until the end of July. They just traded for a AAA catcher from the Red Sox who's putting up modest numbers. I have to assume Pirates called Melvin about Kottaras, and he turned them down. Now I know Melvin's reluctance to deal within the division, but I'm sure Pittsburgh interprets that as Nieves will be available shortly for free.

For crying out loud RR and DM, cut ties with this failed move already. Its mid-June. I don't care if you screw up once in awhile, every manager and GM will. What I can't stand is your stubborn refusal to fix it.

According to Fangraphs, if Nieves was paid what he was worth for his entire career, not only would he have never earned a salary but he would actually owe over 5 million dollars. That's how bad he is and always has been. It takes guys like Roenicke who buy into the idea that since he is terrible offensively, he must be a defensive catcher and great game caller, to accomplish the miracle of him lasting this long in the league.
