Final: @DSL Brewers 4, DSL Rays 3

5-0! Certainly a pleasant change from last year. Another pleasant change: inter-divisional games. The Cerveceros were down 3-0 before rallying with two runs each in the 6th and 7th. Starter Juan Francisco departed after allowing six baserunners and two runs while only getting three outs; 17-year-old RHP Jorge Ortega relieved him and was impressive, going five innings and allowing just a run on five hits while fanning five and walking none. Ortega also kept the ball down, posting a 6/2 K/BB. Hip hip Jorge! 16-year-old SS Orlando Arcia continues to look like a lock for the next Power 50, going 2-4 with his second homer. That's three multi-hit games in five tries for Arcia. 1B Deivi Mejia doubled and walked. RF Jose Pena had a tough day, 0-4 with three strikeouts.

Kind of surprisingly, this was the only true DSL moment of the game:

DSL Rays Top of the 2nd
  • Julio Medina hit by pitch.
  • With Raynil De Castro batting, Julio Medina steals (1) 2nd base.
  • Raynil De Castro doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Ruben Ozuna. Julio Medina scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Jorge Ortega replaces Juan Francisco.
  • Juan Tapia strikes out swinging.
  • Adderly Rosa strikes out swinging.
  • Darwin Maldonado singles on a ground ball to third baseman Raphachel Colatosti. Raynil De Castro out at home, third baseman Raphachel Colatosti to first baseman Deivi Mejia to shortstop Orlando Arcia.

How the D-Crew scored:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 6th
  • Alejandro Mendoza pops out to second baseman Adderly Rosa.
  • Raphachel Colatosti grounds out, pitcher Yomelbin Almonte to first baseman Raynil De Castro.
  • Dionis Hinojosa walks.
  • Orlando Arcia homers (2) on a fly ball to center field. Dionis Hinojosa scores.
  • Ruben Ozuna flies out to center fielder Darwin Maldonado.

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 7th
  • Jose Pena strikes out swinging.
  • Deivi Mejia walks.
  • Raul Mondesi doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Darwin Maldonado. Deivi Mejia to 3rd.
  • Carlos Pena walks.
  • Alejandro Mendoza singles on a fly ball to center fielder Darwin Maldonado. Deivi Mejia scores. Raul Mondesi scores. Carlos Pena to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Dionicio De La Cruz replaces Yomelbin Almonte.
  • Raphachel Colatosti walks. Alejandro Mendoza to 2nd.
  • Dionis Hinojosa strikes out swinging.
  • Orlando Arcia called out on strikes.

Final: @Bradenton 13, Brevard County 3

Well that didn't go particularly well. Adrian Rosario allowed eight runs in three innings, and Mark Willinsky and Efrain Nieves combined to let in five more. Only Evan Anundsen, who worked a scoreless frame, emerged unscathed. Hunter Morris led the 'Tees with a homer and a double. Khris Davis was on three times with a double, a walk, and a HBP. Scooter Gennett and Kentrail Davis each singled.
Brevard County Top of the 3rd
  • Sean McCraw walks.
  • Mike Brownstein hits a ground-rule double (3) on a fly ball to right field. Sean McCraw to 3rd.
  • Scooter Gennett pops out to shortstop Kelson Brown.
  • Kentrail Davis singles on a line drive to right fielder Adalberto Santos. Sean McCraw scores. Mike Brownstein out at home on the throw, right fielder Adalberto Santos to catcher Carlos Paulino. Kentrail Davis to 2nd on the throw.
  • Khristopher Davis hit by pitch.
  • Hunter Morris grounds out, pitcher Quinton Miller to first baseman Aaron Baker.

It's tempting to say that Mike Brownstein scoring on that play, which would have made it 3-2 Bradenton, would have changed the complexion of the game, but I'm reminded of a quote by Sammy Baugh:
When the Chicago Bears defeated the Redskins, 73-0, in the famous 1940 NFL title battle, a Redskins end dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone. Reporters asked Baugh if the outcome would have been different had the pass been caught. "Yeah," Baugh answered, "It would have made it 73-7."

Final: @Dayton 8, Wisconsin 1

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAYTON, OH – The Dayton Dragons scored five runs in the second inning and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. Daniel Corcino struck out 10 and allowed three hits over seven shutout innings to pick up his seventh win of the season for the Dragons. The loss drops the Rattlers to 3-8 on their current road trip.
Dayton (28-27) sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning off Rattlers starting pitcher Austin Ross. The inning started with a leadoff single and a fly ball to center. A grounder to short was booted for an error to put two runners on with one out. Then, Tucker Barnhart singled to center to drive in the first run. Another single loaded the bases.
Theo Bowe pulled an 0-2 pitch from Ross into the corner in right for a double that cleared the bases for a 4-0 Dayton lead. One out later, Billy Hamilton blooped in a single to center and the Dragons had a 5-0 lead.

Barnhart stepped up with runners at first and second in the third inning and doubled to right to knock in two more runs and knock Ross out of the game.

Dayton added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jaren Matthews.

Wisconsin (28-27) struggled to get anything going against Corcino. The Dragons starter didn’t walk a batter and faced two batters over the minimum of 21 in his seven innings of work.

Tyler Roberts drove in a run with a single in the top of the eighth inning against Dayton reliever Pat Doyle. Wisconsin went on to load the bases with no outs against Doyle and the top order coming to the plate. However, Doyle struck out the next three batters to leave the bases loaded and keep Dayton in front 8-1.
Game two of the series is Saturday night. Tyler Thornburg (4-0, 1.31) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton will counter with Daniel Tuttle (4-2, 4.04). Game time is 6:07pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:47pm.

Ross hadn't been as excellent lately, but giving up seven runs in 2.1 innings is pretty disastrous. At least he didn't walk anyone! In fact, with 46 strikes in 63 pitches, it would seem he was throwing batting practice. Del Howell got into his first game since coming off the DL on May 30th and tossed two scoreless innings with a hit, a walk, a hit batter, and a strikeout. Greg Hopkins was the only Rattler on more than once, with a double and a single. Tyler Roberts, Reggie Keen, and Nick Shaw had the T-Rats' other hits. Cody Hawn and Yadiel Rivera each walked; that's Rivera's second walk against 30 strikeouts.

The end of Ross's night:

Dayton Bottom of the 3rd
  • David Vidal singles on a ground ball to left fielder Chris Dennis.
  • Jaren Matthews singles on a ground ball to third baseman Gregory Hopkins. David Vidal to 2nd.
  • Drew Poulk strikes out swinging. David Vidal steals (2) 3rd base. Jaren Matthews steals (6) 2nd base.
  • Tucker Barnhart doubles (11) on a fly ball to right fielder T. J. Mittelstaedt. David Vidal scores. Jaren Matthews scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Dan Britt replaces Austin Ross.
  • Devin Lohman reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Yadiel Rivera to third baseman Gregory Hopkins. Tucker Barnhart out at 3rd.
  • Theo Bowe lines out to first baseman Cody Hawn.

Final: @Huntsville 7, Tennessee 2

Cody Scarpetta was not very good, but he was good enough to get the win: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 84 pitches, 46 strikes. He did, however, notch his first professional hit--a two-run homer. Way to go, Cody! Dan Meadows was pretty impressive, striking out four in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Martin Maldonado and Hainley Statia each had three hits, and Sean Halton had two. Erik Komatsu was 1-5, and Logan Schafer took the collar.

It would somehow have seemed better if Scarpetta homered after allowing one himself, but either way, he came out about even:

Huntsville Bottom of the 4th
  • Martin Maldonado doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Nelson Perez.
  • Hainley Statia strikes out swinging.
  • Cody Scarpetta homers (1) on a fly ball to left center field. Martin Maldonado scores.
  • Logan Schafer lines out to center fielder Brett Jackson.
  • Erik Komatsu pops out to third baseman Josh Vitters in foul territory.

Tennessee Top of the 5th
  • Nelson Perez grounds out, shortstop Angel Gonzalez to first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Marwin Gonzalez flies out to left fielder Brandon Jones.
  • Robert Coello walks.
  • Brett Jackson homers (5) on a line drive to right field. Robert Coello scores.
  • Ryan Flaherty strikes out swinging.

Final: @Nashville 5, Iowa 1

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds ended their homestand on a high note on Friday evening, posting a 5-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs in front of 8,181 fans at Greer Stadium.

With the win, Nashville (23-31) gained a split of the four-game series against their division rivals and finished its homestand with a 5-3 mark.

Three Sounds hurlers (Mark DiFelice, Chase Wright, Sean Green) combined to hold Iowa to three hits on the evening, while the 6-7-8 hitters carried the load for Nashville offense. Mike Rivera, Caleb Gindl, and Taylor Green combined for a 6-for-11 evening with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The Sounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Rivera's two-run, bases-loaded single off Iowa starter Alberto Cabrera. Eric Farris (double) and Edwin Maysonet (hit by pitch) scored on the knock.

I-Cubs first baseman Scott Moore halved the Sounds' lead to 2-1 in the second with a mammoth solo homer to center that cleared the 24-foot high batter's eye. The blast, which came against DiFelice, was his fifth of the year.

Nashville got that run back in the bottom of the frame. Gindl drew an inning-opening walk and moved to third on a Green single before scoring when DiFelice laid down a sacrifice bunt up the first-base line.

DiFelice allowed only one hit (Moore's homer) in his four innings of work in his first start of the year before being removed due to a pitch count limit. He struck out four batters and threw 53 pitches (32 for strikes).

Wright (3-4) followed DiFelice and picked up the victory by hurling four innings of scoreless, two-hit ball. The left-hander's ERA as a reliever dropped to 1.20 (2er/15.0ip).

Gindl upped the Nashville lead to 4-1 in the fourth when he led off with his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to center off Cabrera.

The Sounds extended their advantage to 5-1 in the sixth. Mat Gamel and Rivera opened the inning with consecutive singles before Gindl struck again, driving an opposite-field RBI double into the left field corner to plate Gamel and chase Cabrera from the contest. Iowa reliever Blake Parker came on and retired the next three batters in order, two by strikeout, to escape the jam with no further damage.

Nashville fielders turned a triple play in the top of the seventh inning, the first for the Sounds in three seasons and the first in Pacific Coast League play during the 2011 campaign.

Bryan LaHair led off with a double against Wright and Ty Wright walked to put a pair of runners on for Moore. On the first pitch from Wright, the Cubs' hitter smacked a sharp liner to Maysonet at shortstop, who stepped on second to retire LaHair then fired to first to Gamel to complete the triple-killing.

Cabrera (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up five runs on eight hits over five-plus innings of action for Iowa.

The Sounds head out of town for an eight-game, nine-day road trip beginning on Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. series opener in New Orleans. Left-hander Sam Narron (3-2, 3.46) will man the bump for Nashville to face Zephyrs right-hander Mariano Gomez, who will make his first appearance of the season.

Presumably there will be audio of the triple play up at some point, and maybe video tomorrow. Pretty great work by DiFelice in his first start since 2008; he didn't walk a batter. Gindl's gotten hot in a hurry, with seven hits in his last three games, four for extra-bases. Green is hitting .353/.395/.559 over his last ten games. Gamel also walked.

Stupid question, but are Ruben Ozuna and Ruben Sanchez the same person?
Not a stupid question at all! I'm almost certain that you're right, and it appears you're the first person to notice it. Very helpful, too, since Sanchez/Ozuna will be making his Power 50 debut this weekend. Thanks.

What's sort of strange is that baseballreference has a separate page for both Sanchez and Ozuna, but it looks to pretty clearly be the same person. Milb only shows an Ozuna and no Sanchez. I'll leave it up to the Power 50 folks to decide...

I believe your right and amazing catch heresrobin! Milb has updated his profile page and added the stats of Sanchez last year. All info is the same. Maybe there was a Visa problem which is common for Latin players changing last names.

Tough to top Stu Paul for energy level -- nice.

One of the more exciting aspects of the AAA season has to be the more-than-respectable go-rounds for Caleb Gindl and Taylor Green in their first experiences at that level (Nashville team stats here). Keep in mind that Nashville's OBP and SLG lines aren't influenced nearly as much by stadium and weather conditions as other PCL outposts.

EDIT: Of course, just realized that Eric made this point clear with the current thread title...
