Cubs send Izturis to Pitt for PTBNL

I'm really angry about this move. I want the team we're competing with to play Izturis as much as possible. Not only do the Cubs gain addition by subtraction, but they'll now have an easier time winning games against Pitt if he plays.

Wilson is expensive but Izturis isn't cheap. Pit is paying about $277K of the remainder of Izturis' $4.15 million plus they are on the hook for a $300 k buyout. Unless Wislon gets traded, this makes no sense.

The same could be asked about the Brewers bringing in Graffanino and Bell last season. A team still likes to appear to be competing even if they have no realistic shot.

 

That said, this particular move does seem to make very little sense as WIlson and Izturis are basically the same guy. The only reason for it that I can think of is that WIlson won the 2004 Silver Slugger at SS and they wanted to complete the set so they brought in the 2004 Gold Glove winner at SS.

 

Seriously though, I bet they just want him as a short-term guy at 3rd to fill in for Jose Bautista and then they'll use him as a utility guy.
