Willy Mo Pena

This guy is just raking in AAA for Arizona's club. I had thought the guy was in his thirties by now but he's not even thirty. They've already called up Burroughs as their reclamation project, so I don't know if I see Pena getting a shot there. Might this be a guy to take a look at as a power bat for the bench (and someone that could start a few games next year when we give Gamel a breather)?

Man the dude is raking down there right now, but there's a reason he hasn't been in the majors since '08. He's likely just a AAAA player at this point. AAA success doesn't always translate to the MLB. Just for reference though here's his AAA stats.

.352/.433/.716
17 HR 49 RBI

Again, if he is that good he would've been on a major league roster the last 2 years, and he'd be in the majors right now. The D'Backs are currently carrying only 3 true OF's. But really he couldn't be worse than anyone on our bench right now. At least he has power. Either way, won't happen.

I wonder if the ball is juiced up again in the PCL? Guys like Pena and Lawrie are putting up Ruthian numbers. Reminds me of back in the 80's with the Albuquerque Dukes and Vancouver Canadians when guys like Greg Brock and Glenn Braggs looked like future HOF, due in large part to the altitude and bandbox ballparks.

Wow, totally forgot about Pena and am more surprised that both he's still playing and under 30 than i am that he's raking.

As for acquiring any power bat for off the bench, it sure doesn't seem like Doug is interested in that, he loves him some Mark Kotsay and Josh Wilson. Brendan Katin isn't raking like Pena is, but he certainly has way more power than anyone on our bench to pinch hit and bats righthanded as Melvin said he wanted when bringing in Wilson. Unfortunately, i get the feeling that our bench all this year will be comprised with a group of bad hitters that have absolutely no power to potentially tie/win a game or two late with a home run.

I'd prefer giving our own guy like Katin a chance first but I could definitely get behind a power bat on the bench. The problem is, realistically, who's place is he going to take? Kotsay or Counsell...doubtful. Kottaras...no. That leaves Wilson and Carroll. I think I'd prefer to roll with a backup defensive CF like Carroll instead of WMP. As for Wilson, well...then you have Counsell as the only backup IF. Discussions like this make all the more apparent as to how much the bench leaves to be desired. Counsell has truly become dead weight.

Pena makes a little sense. He seems to be on the Russell Branyan career path. The only thing that I'd like was if he was a lefty. I think that it would be nice to have a lefty with some pop off the bench, if for no other reason than to burn up the opponent's lefty reliever(s).

Willie Mo and Katin seem to be on two different levels though.

Both have the great raw power, but Willie Mo has proven it time and time again, and though it may not seem like it, is only one year older.

I'd love to get a guy like Pena coming off the bench. He'd be pretty ugly getting more than a handful of starts in the field, and that would be stretching it unless someone got hurt, but as a PH'er and then in the long shot that the Brewers make the WS as a potential DH option, that could be big for the Brewers.

Wily Mo is a AAAA player. Doesn't mean he couldn't help out off the bench. He shouldn't really be counted on for anything but that. He's a butcher in the field, and can't hit well enough at the MLB level to warrant the bad defense. The guy just swings from the heels, when he connects, it's awesome. We have no pop off the bench, I'd be for it, if the cost is beyond cheap. Like cash considerations, or a garbage prospect. Would not give up anything of value for him.

Reno is and always has been a hitters paradise. I happened to be there on business in 1992, and took in a game between the Stockton Ports (then a Brewers affiliate) and the Reno Silver Sox. The final score was something like 26-17 in favor of Stockton.

Pena is putting up big numbers for Reno. But so is 35 year old middle infielder Cody Ransom, who's numbers read: .331/.412/.657 with 26 HR and 89 RBI. As a team, Reno is hitting .314/.394/.530. That's a team OPS of .924! Virtually every regular is hitting over .300.

Take the Pena numbers with a huge grain of salt.
