Man Hall has been great thus fan but boy I wish he could rack up a few K's. I orginally thought he was more of a power arm-strike type of pitcher but so far been rather disappointed in that aspect. However Ks are not everything, he is doing is job, not walking batters and not giving up runs. Really nice to see Rivera start to get some hits the last week. It would be awesome if his bat can really start to get going and he can cut down the k'd (add a few more BB's instead)

FYI --

On the cusp of callup, Jays prospect hurt

It looked as if Brett Lawrie was getting closer and closer to the big leagues -- instead he's headed to a Las Vegas hospital to get a X-rays on his left hand, the National Post reports.

Lawrie was hit on the top of the left hand in the first inning of Tuesday's game against the Tucson Padres.

Earlier in the day, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted that "signs point" to Lawrie being called up on Friday. That's uncertain now.

Final: @Bradenton 4, Brevard County 1

Near No-Hitter Key's Marauders Victory

Kyle McPherson Takes No-Hitter into the Ninth in Win

Bradenton Marauders

BRADENTON, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, came two outs from history Tuesday night, as pitcher Kyle McPherson carried the franchise's first no-hitter one out into the ninth inning. A Sean McCraw home run ended the bid.

The Marauders ended up beating the visiting Brevard County Manatees 4-1.

McPherson sat down the first 25 batters he faced, allowing only Sarasota High School grad Scooter Gennett to reach on his own error in the fourth. Gennett was erased two batters later on a double play. The no-hitter ended up getting spoiled with only two outs left. Brevard County catcher McCraw shot his first home run of the season over the right field fence on an 0-1 curveball to end the gem and the shutout.

McPherson would then walk Gennett two batters later, but finish with a groundout of Kentrail Davis to wrap up the complete game. It was the first nine-inning complete game in Marauders history.

McPherson's final line read one run on one hit over nine innings with a walk and six strikeouts. McPherson picked up ten groundouts, five lineouts and six flyouts in addition to the K's. He struck out the side in the eighth. It would have been McPherson's first ever nine-inning no-hitter.

On the offensive side Bradenton scored a lone run in each the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth inings. In the first three instances it was the leadoff man that scored. Jarek Cunningham began with a double in the fourth to score. David Rubinstein doubled before touching home in the fifth and Ramon Cabrera scored after walking in the sixth. Aaron Baker and Elevys Gonzalez hit back-to-back doubles to score in the eighth. Gonzalez finished with three RBI and Robbie Grossman had one.

The win goes to McPherson (4-1) and the loss to Maverick Lasker (1-6), who allowed only three runs over five and one third innings pitched.

Both teams are now 20-32.

Brevard County Box Score

Maverick Lasker's overall line was OK -- he also hit two batters and threw a wild pitch. In his last eight games, Scooter Gennett is 1-for-29. To be honest, kind of waiting for Kentrail Davis to wow us at some point outside of the Midwest League. Shawn Zarraga remains limited to DH duties, but at least he's back in the lineup. That also allowed Sean McCraw to be in the lineup tonight, which proved fortuitous.

Brevard County Play-by-Play

There were five early Manatee at-bats described as "line-outs", including this sequence --

Brevard County Top of the 3rd

  • Shawn Zarraga lines out to shortstop Benji Gonzalez.
  • Sean McCraw lines out to left fielder David Rubinstein.
  • Juan Sanchez lines out to second baseman Jarek Cunningham.

Maverick Lasker had this guy's number, at least after he reached base --

Bradenton Bottom of the 1st

  • Robbie Grossman grounds out to first baseman Hunter Morris.
  • Jarek Cunningham hit by pitch.
  • With Ramon Cabrera batting, Maverick Lasker picks off Jarek Cunningham at 1st on throw to Hunter Morris.
  • Ramon Cabrera singles on a ground ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis.
  • Aaron Baker flies out to left fielder Khristopher Davis.

Bradenton Bottom of the 5th

  • David Rubinstein doubles (9) on a line drive to left fielder Khristopher Davis.
  • Benji Gonzalez out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Shea Vucinich to second baseman Scooter Gennett. David Rubinstein to 3rd.
  • Robbie Grossman out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Khristopher Davis. David Rubinstein scores.
  • Jarek Cunningham hit by pitch.
  • With Ramon Cabrera batting, Maverick Lasker picks off Jarek Cunningham at 1st on throw to Hunter Morris.

Hey DSL Brewers....lets play 16!!!!! Elvis Rubio made his much anticipated debut (well for me anyway) Gian Rizzo who Mass mentioned in the DSL forum earlier today made his debut going 3 scoreless with 1 h & bb with 5 ks in relief for Montano. Let the hype of 16 year old SS Orlando Arcia continue to grow! another 2-4 game adding a 2 run homer and a walk. Mondesi Jr. added 2 BB's to go with a 2-6 night. Yonki Hernandez may have went 0-6 but conitues where he left off last year with 2 BB's. Guy just gets on base (last year 207 BA .381 OBP)

Final: Tennessee 2, @Huntsville 1

Huntsville Box Score

Darn, this one hurts against the first-place Cubbies' affiliate; first baseman Sean Halton's fielding error in the top of the 9th led to an unearned go-ahead run against RHP Darren Byrd, and a one-out infield single from Zelous Wheeler in the bottom of the frame was all the Stars could muster. Starter Michael Fiers (and why we had to wait until late May to see him in this role is unclear and a bit baffling) only needed 55 pitches to toss five innings of one-run ball (3 H, 1 BB, 4 K) -- looking forward to having him continue to stretch out. That lone walk began the game and led to the Smokies' first and only run until the 9th, as LHP Dan Meadows tossed two scoreless behind Fiers.

Andy Gonzalez' two-out base knock in the 4th scored Logan Schafer, who had singled, for Huntsville's only run. Fiers had his first professional hit, a double. Schafer also doubled as part of his two-hit evening. Lee Haydel walked to lead off the Stars' first inning, but was then caught stealing for the 8th time this season, yikes (he has seven steals). Last season in the same league, he was 22-for-28. The Stars had seven hits and three walks, were retired in perfect 1-2-3 order only once, yet only managed the solitary run.

Huntsville Play-by-Play

The fateful 9th --

Tennessee Top of the 9th

  • Junior Lake grounds out, third baseman Zelous Wheeler to first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Ryan Flaherty reaches on fielding error by first baseman Sean Halton.
  • Matthew Spencer singles on a line drive to left fielder Lee Haydel. Ryan Flaherty to 2nd.
  • Steve Clevenger strikes out swinging.
  • Blake Lalli singles on a line drive to left fielder Lee Haydel. Ryan Flaherty scores. Matthew Spencer out at 3rd on the throw, left fielder Lee Haydel to third baseman Zelous Wheeler.

Final: DSL Brewers 8, @DSL Cardinals 3, 16 innings

DSL Brewers Box Score

Yeah, this one was insane -- only five hours and 24 minutes of action; neither team scored over ten innings, between the 6th and 15th; 19-year-old 6'7" LH starter Eliezer Montano opens his third season in the DSL with five decent innings (3 R, 2 ER, only 1 K); three Brewer relievers combined to strand all five inherited runners in a supreme managing display by former farmhand Nestor Corredor; overall, six Brewer kids saw mound action; one of those relievers, 20-year-old RHP Yheris Mateo (a 5'9" RHP), made his pro debut with 2.2 scoreless, RHP Gian Rizzo's debut went very well also, as our diehard DSL onlooker noted above; the win went to yet another hurler making his pro debut, a scoreless 1.1 innings for 18-year-old RHP Doni Arias, who is so new we hadn't even noted his existance yet. These new DSL names must have signed after March 1st, an approximate cutoff date for the media guide.

The teams combined for eight errors, though only three for the good guys; squads combined to go 7-for-40 with RISP, stranding 31 baserunners.

19-year-old Dionis Hinojosa was 2-for-8 with a triple, two RBI, and three SB's, a DH with speed in this contest. And yes, SS Orlando Arcia won't be 17 years old until August, but he did indeed cap the five-run 16th inning rally with a HR to center field. Let the media frenzy begin.

DSL Brewers Play-by-PlayGo for it. You have time....really, you won't believe the baserunners wasted during that ten innings of scoreless ball.

Finally!

DSL Brewers Top of the 16th

  • Defensive switch from right field to center field for Amaury Capellan.
  • Defensive Substitution: Jose Pena replaces Ronnierd Garcia, batting 9th, playing right field.
  • Pitcher Change: Fidencio Flores replaces Addelin Ceballo.
  • Juan De Leon reaches on fielding error by left fielder Eduardo Celestino.
  • With Dionis Hinojosa batting, Juan De Leon advances to 2nd on a balk.
  • Dionis Hinojosa strikes out swinging.
  • Fidencio Flores intentionally walks Deivi Mejia.
  • Elvis Rubio singles on a ground ball to center fielder Amaury Capellan. Juan De Leon scores. Deivi Mejia scores. Elvis Rubio to 3rd. Fielding error by center fielder Amaury Capellan.
  • Raul Mondesi singles on a ground ball to center fielder Amaury Capellan. Elvis Rubio scores.
  • Carlos Pena grounds into a force out, third baseman Junior Agustin to second baseman Robelys Reyes. Raul Mondesi out at 2nd. Carlos Pena to 1st.
  • Orlando Arcia homers (1) on a fly ball to center field. Carlos Pena scores.
  • Francisco Castillo grounds out, pitcher Fidencio Flores to first baseman Domingo Diaz.

Final: @Bowling Green 4, Wisconsin 3, ten innings

Hot Rods top Rattlers in ten innings

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Steve Tinoco's two-out single in the bottom of the tenth inning gave the Bowling Green Hot Rods a 4-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Tinoco drove in a pair of runs in the game. The loss, Wisconsin's second straight in extra innings, spoiled a fine outing by Rattlers starting pitcher Brooks Hall.

The Hot Rods (29-24) broke the ice in the bottom of the fourth inning. A pair of bloop singles to center - one by Julio Cedeno and one by Tinoco - drove in runs to give Bowling Green a 2-0.

Wisconsin (27-25) had the leadoff man aboard in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings, but failed to score. They did not make that mistake in the sixth inning. Cody Hawn drew a leadoff walk and Chris Dennis followed with a single to right. Franklin Romero bunted the runners up to second and third to set the stage for Tony Pechek.

The Rattlers catcher sent a high popup to foul territory in right. Second baseman Robby Price made a nice catch, but was knocked to the ground after he collided with first baseman Phil Wunderlich. Hawn alertly broke for the plate and scored easily. Dennis also tagged and went to third on what turned out to be a big play as the next pitch to the plate eluded catcher Luke Bailey for a passed ball. Dennis scored to tie the game 2-2.

Pechek delivered an two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to send Dennis home with a run that gave Wisconsin a 3-2 lead.

Hall went back out for the bottom of the eighth inning to protect the lead. But, he gave up back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Eric Marzec relieved and got Cedeno to ground into a 4-6-3, but the tying run scored from third base.

Hall pitched seven innings, allowed three runs on eight hits, but was not involved in the decision.

The Hot Rods got two runners aboard in the bottom of the ninth inning against Marzec, but Tom Keeling came on to get out of the inning and send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Mike Walker singled to start the inning. He was the seventh Rattlers of the game to reach base to start the inning. He was sacrificed to second base, but was left stranded when the inning ended.

In the bottom of the tenth, Keeling hit the leadoff batter, but a poor sacrifice attempt allowed Keeling to get the lead runner at second base. However, Cedeno followed with a single to right and that moved the winning run to third base.

Keeling struck out Nick Schwaner for the second out and was ahead of Tinoco 0-2. But, Tinoco lined the next pitch into right for a single and to drive in the game winning run.

Wisconsin hitters went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the game.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark. Jimmy Nelson (1-4, 4.81) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Enny Romero (1-2, 6.46) is set to start for the Hot Rods. Game time is 12:05 PM. Tune in for the Miller Lite Pregame Show on AM1280, WNAM starting at 11:45 AM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Does every Rattler loss seem excrutiating? Sure feels like it. Hard to fault the three moundsmen here; Brooks Hall won't be 21 until later this month, but I have to stop referring to him as a southpaw in the Daily Menu (wishful thinking on my part); Cody Hawn's three walks tonight were nice (.351 OBP), but only seven of 38 base hits are for extra bases -- no amount of hitting into bad luck is going to make that look good for a college first baseman; I can't help myself and will continue to update you in 25 at-bat increments -- Hawn's three walks in this game are three more than Franklin Romero has on the season, we're at 127 AB's now...

Wisconsin Play-by-Play

None of the wasted opportunites (and they were numerous) involved a runner on 3rd with less than two out, but that still doesn't make the game log pain-free...

Streaky Manatees are consistently inconsistentby Mark DeCotis, Florida Today

After Tuesday night's 4-1 loss at Bradenton, the Brevard County Manatees were 20-32 in this Florida State League season, due in large part to streaks of very bad and very good baseball.

The Manatees endured five losing streaks: five (to open the season), four, eight, two and seven games, only five times losing a single game. Conversely, they had winning streaks of three, two, two, two, two and five games, only four times winning single games.

Manager Jeff Isom ties the consistency of the losing and winning streaks to pitching, defense and mindset.

"I know when we're winning, we're getting very good pitching," Isom said before the Manatees' five-game winning streak ended against Bradenton.

"This last home stand was no exception. I think that's the one consistent thing that we're seeing when we are winning games is the pitching. If you look at the losses that's the one part that will show in that they have struggled."

But, the pitchers aren't shouldering all the blame.

"We weren't strong defensively at times," Isom said. "When you have those two things going hand in hand, pitching and defense, you're going to win games. If you don't have it, you're going to lose games."

And during the Manatees five-game winning streak, Isom noticed something else.

"I'm seeing guys play with confidence," he said. "I'm seeing guys going up to the plate different than how they were earlier in the year or when they were struggling as a team.

"Defensively, we had some pretty good plays. That comes with the confidence. When we were on those losing streaks, it was almost like defensively, we just try not to make the error instead of just going out and playing the game. Now we're going out there and we're looking to get guys out.

"Right now they're saying 'hit the ball to me, I'm going to make a play and get the guy out.' It's definitely a different mindset when you've have a little bit of a winning streak going on compared to when you've lost seven or eight in a row."

The effectiveness of the opposing teams' pitchers, naturally, also have played a role in the outcomes, according to Manatees catcher Sean McCraw.

But like the opposition, the Manatees staff is finding its stride -- pounding the strike zone and getting ahead in the counts -- the defense is tightening and the offense is producing.

And the results are showing this could be what this talented team has been looking for.

McCraw thinks so.

"If the pitching can stay where it's at right now and be consistent, we can put together several more winning streaks," he said.

That signs of a turnaround are happening at this juncture in the season is notable.

"Especially at the tail end of 21 days without a day off and how we finished, that's pretty encouraging," McCraw said.

"I hope we can keep it up."

Final: Iowa 7, @Nashville 2

Sounds Drop Opener To Iowa, Lose 7-2

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds lost 7-2 to the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium in the series opener of a four-game set.

With the loss, Nashville moves to 21-30 and is only 1-7 in the PCL American Northern Division this season.

Sounds catcher George Kottaras went 0-for-1 with three walks to snap a season-best nine-game hitting streak. Jeremy Reed went 2-for-4 with a walk.

Iowa plated their first run in the top of the first inning as Marquez Smith smoked a two-out double to right field. Amaury Rivas recorded the next seven straight outs until Bryan LeHair singled in the top of the fourth inning. Iowa went up 2-0 later in the inning as Augie Ojeda and Matt Camp each singled with two outs.

Two innings later in the seventh, the Cubs plated four more runs to go up 6-0. The first three batters reached base with the first run coming on a sacrifice fly from Chris Robinson. Casey Coleman doubled in the next run and removed Rivas from the contest. Bobby Scales followed with his team-leading 17th double, a two-run two-bagger off the top of the centerfield wall.

In his first Triple-A start after being optioned by Chicago, Iowa starter Casey Coleman allowed one hit through the first five innings, before getting into trouble in the sixth. Eric Farris earned a nine-pitch walk, moved to second on a groundout, and scored easily on Mat Gamel's team-leading 15th double. Edwin Maysonet singled home Gamel for the other run to make it 6-2.

Iowa scored an unearned run on Zack Segovia in the top of the seventh frame. With runners on first and third and one out, Camp hammered a line drive to Maysonet at shortstop, who misplayed the ball and allowed the run from the third to score.

Coleman (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. He also went 2-for-3 with one RBI and runs scored from the dish.

Rivas (3-5) gave up six runs while scattering nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. After beginning the season 3-1, the right-hander is now winless in his last seven decisions. Rivas waked in both of his plate appearances.

Segovia gave up one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings in relief. Donovan Hand got out of a based load jam and followed with a scoreless frame.

In his fourth overall rehab appearance and second with the Sounds, left-hander Zach Braddock walked three batters in 2/3 of an inning. The left-hander got Scales to fly out on the first pitch, and then walked three of the next four batters to load the bases before reaching his 20-pitch count (six for strikes).

The Sounds and Cubs will play at 7:05pm CT on Thursday at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series. Nashville right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (0-3, 4.14) looks for his first win against Iowa righty Jay Jackson (1-4, 7.56).

Nashville Box Score

In addition to his walk, Farris was 1-4 with a triple. Starting pitcher Amaury Rivas didn't register an official at-bat, but drew two walks -- one to lead off the 3rd inning, and the other to keep the 5th inning alive with two outs. Taylor Green went 0-4, Erick Almonte 0-3.
