Final: @Kane County 5, Wisconsin 4 (11 innings)

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
GENEVA, IL – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers grabbed a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the eleventh inning on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium. But, the Kane County Cougars scored four times in the bottom of the eleventh to defeat the Rattlers 5-4.
Cheslor Cuthbert put Kane County (23-28) in front in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out bloop single to center that scored Alex Llanos from second base.

Wisconsin (27-24) had trouble against Kane County starter Leondy Perez. The right-hander held Wisconsin to one hit through six innings. Yet, the Rattlers managed to tie the game with a run in the sixth inning without the benefit of a hit.

Reggie Keen walked to start the sixth. A sacrifice bunt by Nick Shaw moved Keen into scoring position for Cody Hawn and Mike Walker. But the Rattlers' big bats were not needed. Perez whirled and fired an errant pickoff throw to second base before he threw a pitch to Hawn.

Keen headed for third as the ball trickled into center. Kane County center fielder Alex Llanos thought he had a play on Keen at third base, but his throw was high. The ball deflected off the glove of Cuthbert at third and wound up in the stands. That allowed Keen to score the tying run.

Wisconsin had a great chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases on three straight one out singles by Chris Dennis, Greg Hopkins, and Robbie Garvey. But, Kane County reliever Chase Boruff got Tony Pechek to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Wisconsin appeared to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the tenth inning. Keen was at third and Shaw was at first with one out and Hawn was at the plate. Boruff looked to have missed low and inside on a pitch to Hawn and the ball skipped to the backstop. Keen scored without a play. But, after a discussion between the umpires, it was ruled that Hawn was hit by a pitch. Keen was sent back to third and the run was taken off the board.

The Rattlers still had the bases loaded with one out in the tenth, but Walker grounded into an inning ending double play.
Wisconsin made no mistake about scoring in the top of the eleventh. Dennis doubled to start the inning. Hopkins bunted Dennis over to third. Garvey lined a single to left. Dennis had to hold up to see if the ball would drop in for a hit. Then, Dennis just beat the throw home. Wisconsin tacked on two more runs in the inning on a double by Pechek and an RBI grounder by Keen.

Rattlers closer Greg Holle, who pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth, could not close it out in the bottom of the eleventh. The inning started with a single. Holle got the first out of the inning on a grounder. But, that was it.

Lance Adams followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Orlando Calixte doubled to right-center to drive in a pair of runs. Geulin Beltre singled back through the middle to drive in Calixte with the tying run.

Brian Garman came on to relieve Holle and gave up a single. A slow roller to short was turned into an out at first but the runners had moved up to second and third. Wisconsin elected to walk Alex Llanos, who had three hits in the game, intentionally to face Jake Kuebler, a .143 hitter on the season.

Garman missed low on a 3-2 pitch to force in the winning run.
The Timber Rattlers continue their 13-day road trip on Tuesday by starting a series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Kentucky. Wisconsin has Brooks Hall (1-0, 4.00) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Bowling Green will counter with CJ Riefenhauser (3-5, 2.92). Game time is 7:05pm from Bowling Green Ballpark. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or www.timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm.

My god, Chris is right when he refers to Elfstrom Stadium as a house of horrors for the Rattlers. What a disastrous series of events. Neither Hawn nor manager Matt Erickson thought the pitch actually hit him, and Chris sounded like he agreed. There was also a weird play on the second batter of the 11th inning. Cuthbert grounded into what sounded like it should have been a 5-4-3 double play, but then the umpires ruled that Shaw was off the bag at second, so the lead runner was safe. Chris indicated that the calls at both bases were bad; it didn't end up mattering really, but either way, suboptimal umpiring.

Anyway, kudos to Charly Bashara on a cromulent start, and way to go STOSH!--he struck out four in 3.1 scoreless innings. On the year, Wawrzasek has fanned over 30% of the batters he's faced. Garvey led the Rattlers with three hits, and Dennis and Yadiel Rivera had two each. Cody Hawn drew a walk but is 0-11 since coming off the DL. Runnin' Reggie Keen stole his 22nd base.

Final: @DSL Brewers 5, DSL Athletics 4

After giving up three runs in the 7th to tie it, the Cerveceros got a run in the 8th to provide the winning margin. 19-year-old RHP Joel Dicent, about whom Bruce Seid was moderately excited about after signing last year, had a fine season debut. He went five innings, allowing a run on two hits, a walk, and two hit batters while fanning three. A new name, soon-to-be-18-year-old RHP Jorge Ortega, allowed three runs in two innings, albeit with four strikeouts. 20-year-old Yonki Herandez, who was an infielder last year but a center fielder today, had two hits and was hit twice; he was hit ten times last year in just 224 plate appearances. 21-year-old C/1B Deivi Mejia was also perfect, 2-2 with a walk and a HBP. That's five HBP total between the two clubs, which isn't at all unusual at this level. Last year's promise-filled bonus baby, 18-year-old OF Jose Pena, also had two hits. 16-year-old SS Orlando Arcia, the youngest player in the system, was 0-4 with his second steal. Raul Mondesi did not play. No errors for the D-Crew! A round of...malta? on me!

A's starter Carlos Navas had a short day:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 1st
  • Yonki Hernandez hit by pitch.
  • Orlando Arcia grounds into a force out, shortstop Gabriel Santana to second baseman Rodolfo Penalo. Yonki Hernandez out at 2nd. Orlando Arcia to 1st.
  • With Ruben Ozuna batting, Orlando Arcia steals (1) 2nd base.
  • Ruben Ozuna grounds out, shortstop Gabriel Santana to first baseman Jose Rosario.
  • Pitcher Change: Anderson Mata replaces Carlos Navas.
  • Jose Pena singles on a fly ball to left fielder Alfredo Sosa. Orlando Arcia scores.
  • With Deivi Mejia batting, wild pitch by Anderson Mata, Jose Pena to 2nd.
  • Deivi Mejia singles on a fly ball to left fielder Alfredo Sosa. Jose Pena scores.
  • Juan De Leon strikes out swinging.

Just your average 6-4-7 double play:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 5th
  • Carlos Pena walks.
  • Francisco Castillo reaches on force attempt, fielding error by third baseman Renato Nunez. Carlos Pena to 2nd.
  • Yonki Hernandez singles on a fly ball to left fielder Alfredo Sosa. Carlos Pena to 3rd. Francisco Castillo to 2nd.
  • Orlando Arcia grounds into double play, shortstop Gabriel Santana to second baseman Rodolfo Penalo to left fielder Alfredo Sosa. Carlos Pena scores. Francisco Castillo out at 3rd. Yonki Hernandez out at 2nd. Orlando Arcia to 1st.
  • Ruben Ozuna pops out to first baseman Jose Rosario.

Though they did take the lead, the Brewers didn't exactly take full advantage of their opportunity in the 8th:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 8th
  • Ruben Ozuna singles on a fly ball to right fielder Vicmal De La Cruz.
  • Jose Pena singles on a ground ball to left fielder Alfredo Sosa. Ruben Ozuna to 2nd.
  • Deivi Mejia hit by pitch. Ruben Ozuna to 3rd. Jose Pena to 2nd.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Joan Abreu replaces Deivi Mejia.
  • Juan De Leon strikes out swinging.
  • Dionis Hinojosa walks. Ruben Ozuna scores. Jose Pena to 3rd. Joan Abreu to 2nd.
  • Julio Sotelo strikes out swinging.
  • Francisco Castillo grounds out, second baseman Luis Osorio to first baseman Jose Rosario.

And the A's returned the favor in the 9th:

DSL Athletics Top of the 9th
  • Jose Rosario singles on a fly ball to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Jesus Rivas replaces Jose Rosario.
  • Gabriel Santana out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Carlos Sosa to first baseman Juan De Leon. Jesus Rivas to 2nd.
  • Anderson De La Rosa singles on a ground ball to left fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Jesus Rivas to 3rd.
  • Luis Osorio grounds out, third baseman Joan Abreu to first baseman Juan De Leon. Anderson De La Rosa to 2nd.
  • Jonesy Zarraga strikes out swinging.

Final: @Huntsville 4, Tennessee 3

The Stars scored three unearned runs between the 2nd and 3rd innings thanks to two Josh Vitters errors and rode that to victory despite Rob Wooten allowing a run in the 9th. Vitters was the third overall pick in the 2007 draft, and--though I'm sure he's a pleasant enough person--because he was a highly touted Cubs prospect, I always enjoy a bit of schadenfreude when he doesn't play well (he also went 0-4). Wily Peralta started and apparently had the tooth with his pitching ability reinstalled in his mouth because he was again effective: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 8/1 GO/FO, 94 pitches, 59 strikes. Jim Henderson and his new mid-90s heater allowed a run in 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. Sean Halton, Zelous Wheeler (welcome back, Z!), and Brandon Jones had two hits apiece. Erik Komatsu went 0-3 with a sac fly. Neither Logan Schafer nor Lee Haydel started, though Schafer came in late on defense.
As discussed:

Huntsville Bottom of the 2nd
  • Zelous Wheeler singles on a line drive to right fielder Nelson Perez.
  • Brandon Jones singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brett Jackson. Zelous Wheeler to 2nd.
  • Martin Maldonado hits a sacrifice bunt. Throwing error by third baseman Josh Vitters. Zelous Wheeler scores. Brandon Jones scores. Martin Maldonado to 3rd.
  • Hainley Statia grounds out, pitcher Brooks Raley to first baseman Rebel Ridling.
  • Wily Peralta strikes out swinging.
  • Erik Komatsu flies out to center fielder Brett Jackson.

Huntsville Bottom of the 3rd
  • Steffan Wilson grounds out, shortstop Marwin Gonzalez to first baseman Rebel Ridling.
  • Sean Halton reaches on fielding error by third baseman Josh Vitters.
  • Angel Gonzalez walks. Sean Halton to 2nd.
  • Zelous Wheeler grounds into a force out, shortstop Marwin Gonzalez to second baseman Ryan Flaherty. Sean Halton to 3rd. Angel Gonzalez out at 2nd. Zelous Wheeler to 1st.
  • Brandon Jones singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brett Jackson. Sean Halton scores. Zelous Wheeler to 2nd.
  • Martin Maldonado grounds out, second baseman Ryan Flaherty to first baseman Rebel Ridling.

Peralta needed a strikeout here and carved up Brett Jackson, Baseball America's #38 prospect entering the year and owner of a gaudy .295/.420/.518 line, on four pitches:

Tennessee Top of the 3rd
  • Nelson Perez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Erik Komatsu.
  • Marwin Gonzalez walks. Nelson Perez to 2nd.
  • Brooks Raley out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Wily Peralta to second baseman Hainley Statia. Nelson Perez to 3rd. Marwin Gonzalez to 2nd.
  • Brett Jackson called out on strikes.
  • Josh Vitters grounds out, third baseman Zelous Wheeler to first baseman Sean Halton.

In fact, Peralta struck out Jackson all three times he faced him.

Final: Oklahoma City 3, @Nashville 2

Sounds Lose Finale to RedHawks, 3-2

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A ninth-inning rally came up just short as the

Nashville Sounds had their season-best four-game winning streak come to a

close with a 3-2 loss to the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday evening

at Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series.

Trailing 3-0 entering the ninth, the Sounds put a pair of runs on the

board but couldn't complete the comeback and suffered their Pacific

Coast League-leading 15th one-run defeat of the year.

Despite the loss, Nashville (21-29) took three of the four games from the RedHawks in the series.

Second baseman Edwin Maysonet went 2-for-4 to account for Nashville's lone multiple-hit effort on the evening.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Tommy

Manzella drew a one-out walk from Sounds starter Sam Narron and later

scored the game's first run on a Max Ramirez groundout.

RedHawks center fielder Brandon Barnes upped the visitors' lead to 3-0

in the second when he slugged his eighth home run of the season, a

two-run shot to left-center that struck the neck of the guitar-shaped

scoreboard. Drew Locke, who had opened the frame with a double, also

scored on the blast.

In a spot start, left-hander Andy Van Hekken worked four scoreless

innings for Oklahoma City, allowing only two singles while striking out

six batters.

RedHawks reliever Wesley Wright (1-0) followed Van Hekken with two scoreless innings of his own to pick up the victory.

The Sounds broke up the Oklahoma City shutout bid in the bottom of the

ninth, as Brett Carroll and Jeremy Reed opened the frame with

back-to-back doubles off RedHawks reliever Fernando Abad.

After Abad struck out Mat Gamel for the first out, right-hander David

Carpenter came on to retire Maysonet on a popup before Mike Rivera

stroked a two-out RBI single up the middle to plate Reed to make it a

3-2 contest. Carpenter then induced a game-ending groundout from Taylor

Green to preserve the narrow win and earn his third save.

Narron (3-2) allowed three runs on four hits over five frames of action,

walking one batter and striking out five, to take the loss and snap his

personal three-game winning streak.

Outfielder Erick Almonte went 0-for-3 in seven innings of action on the

evening and is hitting .286 (2-for-7) through three games on his

rehabilitation assignment with Nashville.

The Sounds continue their homestand on Tuesday evening by welcoming the

division-rival Iowa Cubs to town for the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game

series. It will be the first of 16 meetings between the clubs this

season. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (3-4, 4.12) will man the bump for

Nashville to face Iowa right-hander Casey Coleman, who will make his

first Triple-A appearance of the year.

Nashville box score

Brandon Boggs went 0-4 with three strikeouts; Eric Farris was 1-4; Gamel was 0-3 with a walk; Green was 1-4 with a double. In just his second appearance with the Brewers organization, Daniel Ray Herrera worked one inning, struck out two, walked none, & allowed no hits. Herrera, Justin James, & Robert Hinton kept the RedHawks off the scoreboard for the final four innings. The trio allowed just two hits, one walk, & struck out five.

Nashville play-by-play

The Sounds' best shot at scoring prior to the 9th came in the 7th inning...

Nashville Bottom of the 7th

  • Pitcher Change: Daniel Meszaros replaces Wesley Wright, batting 9th.
  • Erick Almonte strikes out swinging.
  • Mat Gamel walks.
  • Edwin Maysonet singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Daniel Meszaros. Mat Gamel to 2nd.
  • Mike Rivera pops out to shortstop Tommy Manzella.
  • Taylor Green flies out to left fielder Drew Locke.

... but wasn't happening.
