Brewerfan Poll: Jon Lucroy's Defense

And That
What grade, 1 (sub-Estradan) to 10 (fantastically awesome) would you give Jon Lucroy on defense so far this year? I'm asking about the total package: blocking, game calling, throwing, etc. Please take all of that into consideration, and feel free to reply with how he's doing at all those different things.

I gave him a 3 in throwing, he has only nabbed 3/25 runners on stolen base attempts. That is pretty poor but I didn't go with zero since some of that has to be on the pitcher.

I gave him an 8 for calling a game- - basically just a guess but the staff seems to like him, other than Wolf but even that has improved.

I gave him a 7 for blocking - - overall pretty good

I weighted the categories as throwing 20%, Calling a game 60% and blocking 20%; weighted average 6.8 so I rounded it up to 7.

The weightings are pretty arbitrary on my part but I just wanted to see what I'd come up with and 7 seems pretty fair.

I gave him a 6. I think he's pretty good at everything except throwing out runners this year. I remember him being better last year, but that's just a memory - don't know if it's actually true or not

I don't have much to back this up, but it just seems to me that he doesn't have a chance on most SB attempts. As a result, I think he's tried to be too quick in the last week to 10 days.

Overall though I think he's been very solid. I gave him a 7.

The best thing about Lucroy is that he's exceeding expectations. With prospects that so rarely happens, that when it does, and with a catcher at that, he becomes a fan favorite instantly.

The fact that he bares such an striking resemblance to Molitor when he's up at the plate...from his facial expression, to his stroke, etc..etc...

And as I typed this, he allowed two straight passed balls and allowed a runner to steal 2nd on him. What a bum...get rid of him!

As of right now, roughly 90% of respondents have him in the 5-7 range; if you average the total points over ballots for those three numbers, you get a composite score of 6.25. I think that's pretty accurate.

I'm curious to hear why a couple folks voted 2 & 3. I went with 6 as he has been above average in all areas except throwing out runners.

I gave him a 4, after debating between 4 and 5. Pitcher's fault or not, he has to improve his clip of throwing out runners. I think that he could improve his pitch blocking as well. Everything else is pretty good. I'd give him an 8 for his hitting thus far though.

2010 - 37 SB, 17 CS (31.5% CS), 655 Inn.

2011 (to date) - 24 SB, 3 CS (11.1% CS), 296 Inn.

By the numbers, teams would also appear to be attempting steals at a slightly higher rate against Lucroy than last year (.74 SB Attempts / 9 Inn in 2010 v. .82 SBA/9 in 2011). That could have as much to do with who has been attempting steals against him than it does his throws, and there's always an element of how well the pitcher holds runners which contributes to those percentages.

I put him in the 6 range for this year, in part because of the Nillsson-esque CS% (2012 starting catcher: Henry Blanco!), and partially because of the Randy Wolf -thing.
