2011-05-25 Nationals (Marquis) at Brewers (Greinke) - [Brewers win, 6-4]

Greinke has given up 4 or more ER in 3 of his first 4 starts, and 3 in this one already. That's kind of alarming to me.

By comparison, last year, when his ERA was 4.17....he only gave up 4 or more ER in 10 out of 33 starts. 4 of those came in September when he may have been tired or stopped throwing his slider. Maybe the injury and missing spring really effected him, but in any case, he's either getting extremely unlucky or this is the worst he has pitched in the last few years. His numbers outside of ERA are stellar, but something just seems off to me.

if Roenicke doesn't let Greinke bat, I will be angry. Even though we have an off-day tomorrow, I still like him out there for the 6th/7th than any combo our bullpen can provide. Especially since the pen covered a lot of innings last night.

edit to say that I obviously wanted him kept in the game for his bat!

Greinke has been a complete bust.

His results have been a complete bust. All his peripheral stats (even this year) point to him being an excellent pitcher. 3 run homers instead of solo shots and 4 hits in a row instead of scattering them over 4 innings, etc. I think his luck will even out and he'll be a stud.

I really hope you're right, but this has been his 5th start....all of which have had the same thing happen. Either 3 run shots or 5 hits in an inning or something. That sure seems like a huge amount of bad luck for one guy.

5 starts is nothing. He's showing no signs of injury so I'm not worried at all.

Oh, I agree, 5 starts is a small sample size and he didn't really have a spring training at all. This stretch is one of the worst he's had outside of his first year in the majors. Hopefully things just start falling his way a bit. In all honesty, it's probably unfair, as we all expected/hoped he would come in and revert back to 2009 form, which I'm sure he'll never quite duplicate.

Time for Casey to remember he was an RBI machine last year. Or swing on 3-0 and ground out.

Not only did he swing 3-0, that wasn't a pitch right down the middle. It was probably a strike, but a good pitch and one you should let go by on 3-0. Didn't even hit it hard somewhere.

Granted, with Kotsay on deck, I don't really blame him much but don't help them out. Wait for a better pitch than that, it was 3-0 for crying out loud.

McGehee has been pretty underwhelming so far this year. He has rarely taken advantage of people pitching around Fielder.

I thought the rule of thumb on swinging 3-0 is that you had to swing at a pitch that you can actually drive somewhere.

Jeeeeez. Swing at 3-0 and make an out. Come on now.

Gameday had that up and in, borderline strike. If you are going to swing 3-0 it better only be on FBs down the middle.

Exactly. You don't swing 3-0 unless you know you can hit it hard somewhere.

I don't know why teams even pitch to Fielder at this point. Casey has been pretty bad in the 5 hole, nothing more than average (at best). And after Casey, it's usually Betancourt or Kotsay or both. There's just no point in pitching to Prince if you don't absolutely have to.

Good inning for Greinke there, 91 pitches....he's due up 4th this inning. Think we leave him in?

Teams know that even bad hitter will hurt you enough if you fill the bases for them beforehand.
