Brewers claim LH reliever Daniel Ray Herrera off waivers from Reds; Herrera optioned to AAA, Parra on 60-day DL

According to John Fay of Cincinnati Enquirer, the Brewers claimed 5'6" lefty reliever Danny Ray Herrera off of waivers from the Reds. Herrera is a real soft tosser who was pitching with Louisville in AAA so presumably he still has an option. Brewers would have to clear a spot on their 40 man. Parra to 60 man?

The JS Blog is reporting it, though no confirmation from the Brewers yet. The scouting report from there:

Herrera, 26 is a little guy -- 5-foot-6 -- who doesn't throw hard (83-85 mph with his fastball). He does throw a screwball that is tough on lefties. In 113 games with the Reds from 2008-'10, he went 5-7 with a 3.62 ERA. In 92 innings, he allowed 104 hits and 33 walks with 66 strikeouts and a 1.489 WHIP.

Against lefties, Herrera has averaged 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.77 walks, with a .206 batting average. Righties have hit .362 against him.

Herrera came to the Reds from the Rangers in the 2007 trade that sent Josh Hamilton to Texas and pitcher Edinson Volques to Cincy.

Does he have any talent? Doesn't seem like we really need him, especially if we have to clear a 40 man spot for him.

The last news I heard on Parra was that he was going in for a second opinion, and that there was a possibility of Tommy John surgery, so we may need him.

Herrara's stats from 2008-2010 vs LHP (155 AB): .206 BA, .270 OBP, .284 SLG, .554 OPS, 35 K, 13 BB. During that stretch, righties hit him for a .952 OPS in 199 AB. Unless he was facing Pujols every time, I think this means that he should not be used against righties, but as a LOOGY, he looks to be pretty good.

Manny Parra has been placed on the 60-day DL to free up a spot on the 40-man roster.

Brewers claimed LHP Danny Herrera off waivers from Reds; optioned him to Triple-A Nashville.

With Zach Braddock, Manny Parra and Mitch Stetter on the disabled list, Milwaukee could certainly use a left-hander out of the bullpen. They don't currently have a healthy one, though they opted to option Herrera to Triple-A for now. Expect to see him with the big league club soon. The diminutive left-hander boasts a career 3.62 ERA in 92 innings, including a 3.91 ERA over 36 relief appearances with the Reds last season. He's been particularly tough on left-handed hitters, posting career marks of 7.2 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in 44 innings against them.

Their have been a few short lefties that have had some major league success. 5'8" Fred Norman was a mainstay of the Big Red Machine staffs in the 70's.

Bobby Shantz. all of 5'6", 139 pounds, was NL MVP in 1952 with the Phillies, and later pitched in the 1957 World Series for the Yankees against the Braves.

This guy has always been fairly effective, so why did the Reds release him. Did he asked to be released, or did the have to clear a 40 man roster spot for somebody? Was this related to the Reds call-up of Todd Frazier?

Whatever the reason, Herrera is a nice addition who shouldn't have lasted this long on the waiver wire.

Not that anyone would notice/care besides me but Shantz won the '52 AL MVP with the Philadelphia A's going 24-7, 2.48 ERA, 152/60 K/BB in 279.2 IP.

DRH was/is a one trick pony. When that pony is going well he's really effective as a loogy/max one inning guy. When its not going well and he can't spot it, he's in trouble because his fastball is low to mid 80s. Ie amped up batting speed.

If you guys use him well and don't over expose him, you should have some luck with him.

Thank's for the info Joseph. What was the reasoning for exposing him?
