D'vo raised his average 47 points with his 6-hit day, that's pretty fun to see.

I'm becoming more and more enamored by the class in Brevard right now. Not really any "can't miss" guys, but a good amount of potential. Really would like to see the organization push some of its older talent though, put guys like Heckathorn, Morris, and Davis on the fast track to see what they're really made of. They can take their time with Gennett and Bucci who are both still shy of 21.

Edit: My mistake, Scooter turned 21 two weeks ago. Still young, though, and certainly no rush for him with Weeks firmly in place with the Brewers.

Final: Brevard County 19, @St. Lucie 9

As several of you have noticed, BC had kind of a big day. Despite the lopsided score, this was actually a pretty good game. The Mets took a 9-8 lead with a five-run bottom of the 6th, but the 'Tees stormed back with three in the 7th, four in the 8th, and four more in the 9th. D'Vontrey Richardson indeed went 6-6 with a double (the fact that he was only caught stealing once after being on base six times is probably a plus). Hunter Morris had four hits, three doubles, and a walk. Brock Kjeldgaard homered twice and drove in seven. Shawn Zarraga went deep for the second time this year and also singled and was hit by a pitch. Kentrail Davis singled, doubled, and walked. Khris Davis singled and doubled. Scooter Gennett had two hits. 23 hits in total for the Sea Cows. They hit .479/.519/.792. So yeah, kind of a big day. Pitching? What pitching? Adrian Rosario gave up four runs in four innings, and R.J. Seidel picked up the ultimate vulture win despite giving up five runs in two innings. Santo Manzanillo tossed two scoreless.
Way too much to single out, but check it out. My favorite part is that BC had to send six men to the plate in the 9th before D'Vo could get his shot at a six-hit day, and they did it easily, with the only out prior to Richardson coming up being a Scooter Gennett lineout:

Brevard County Top of the 9th
  • Shea Vucinich singles on a line drive to left fielder Pedro Zapata.
  • Juan Sanchez singles on a ground ball to left fielder Pedro Zapata. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Scooter Gennett lines out to second baseman J. B. Brown.
  • Kentrail Davis walks. Shea Vucinich to 3rd. Juan Sanchez to 2nd.
  • Hunter Morris doubles (14) on a line drive to right fielder Cesar Puello. Shea Vucinich scores. Juan Sanchez scores. Kentrail Davis to 3rd.
  • Khristopher Davis doubles (7) on a line drive to left fielder Pedro Zapata. Kentrail Davis scores. Hunter Morris scores.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a fly ball to right fielder Cesar Puello. Khristopher Davis to 3rd.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging.
  • Shawn Zarraga flies out to center fielder Matt Den Dekker.

Is Hunter Morris a legitimate 1B prospect? If they bump him to AA later this year; could they reasonably expect him to be in the bigs at some point in 2012? If so it would be another internal option at 1B other than Gamel. I see Morris has a ton of doubles power; will that eventually translate to HR or is he more like Overbay? Also looks like he needs to start taking some walks as well

Final: @Nashville 11, Sacramento 10

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Taylor Green hit a go-ahead, three-run homer [audio] in the bottom of the seventh inning to power the Nashville Sounds to a 11-10 victory over the visiting Sacramento River Cats in front of 7,975 screaming kids on Tuesday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

With the win, Nashville (14-24) earned a season-split with Sacramento. All four games of the series were decided by one run.

Four Nashville hitters recorded multiple-hit contests in the victory. Outfielder Brett Carroll continued to stay hot against Sacramento, adding his second three-hit performance in the series while scoring three runs. Carroll, Edwin Maysonet and Green all drove in three runs on the afternoon.

The Sounds sent all nine hitters to the dish in the bottom of the first inning and plated four runs on Sacramento starter Guillermo Moscoso. The River Cats' right-hander gave up a leadoff double to Eric Farris and walked the bases loaded before allowing a two-run single to Carroll. Moscoso then balked to put both runners in scoring position before allowing another two-run single to catcher George Kottaras.

Sacramento plated two runs to trim the Nashville lead to 4-2 in the next frame, all with two outs. Josh Butler surrendered a solo homer to catcher Josh Donaldson, his third of the season. Three batters later, the River Cats plated their next run when Jemile Weeks hit an RBI base knock.

The River Cats went ahead 5-4 in the next inning, beginning with Matt Carson hitting his sixth home run just inches above the glove of Jordan Brown in left field. With two outs again in the inning, Sacramento plated two more runs, highlighted by an RBI double from Donaldson and RBI single from Michael Taylor.

Nashville knotted the contest at 5-5 in the next frame. Carroll doubled to left field and later scored when Maysonet knocked a two-out single to right field.

Sacramento scored the last of its run in the top of the six inning, plating five runs to take a 10-5 lead. Outfielder Michael Taylor singled and scored on the ensuing Shane Petersen triple down the left field line. Reliever Jim Henderson came into the contest and allowed Weeks to single home Petersen for the next run. After a walk, Carson belted his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot over the left field wall.

Nashville went ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning, again sending all nine batters to the plate for six runs. Sacramento reliever Jerry Blevins began the inning by hitting Brown and giving up a double to Brendan Katin, his team-leading 18th extra-base hit of the season. Carroll followed by driving in his third run of the contest with an RBI base hit to right field.

Blevins intentionally walked Kottaras before being replaced by Willie Eyre (3-2), who quickly offered up a base-loaded, two-run single to Maysonet. Green then blasted the first pitch he saw from Eyre over the center field wall and off the clubhouse. Giving Nashville the 11-10 lead, the three-run homer was Green's fourth of the year and first since April 17.

Both starters took no decisions. Butler gave up a season-high seven runs while scattering 10 hits with two walks in five plus innings. Moscoso lasted three innings for Sacramento, surrendering five runs on six hits with three walks.

Henderson (1-1) backed into the win with two innings. Donovan Hand contributed a scoreless frame while Mark DiFelice converted his fourth save with a perfect ninth.

After an off day on Wednesday, the Sounds travel west to begin an eight-game road trip with the Salt Lake Bees (AAA-Angels) and Tacoma Rainiers (AAA-Mariners) of the Pacific Conference Northern Division, the teams' only meetings this season. Left-hander Chase Wright (0-3, 7.50) makes the start at 7:35 pm CT on Thursday for Nashville against Salt Lake right-hander (0-3, 10.67).

What a rally! Per Toby, Green just missed another three-run homer in the 1st inning. Terrible start for Butler, who's watched whatever glimmer of prospect-ness he had entering the year disappear. In the midst of all the fireworks, Jeremy Reed went 0-5 in the three hole; Mat Gamel was also hitless, but he walked twice. Katin must be a little frustrated watching Mike Rivera get called up to serve as a right-handed bench bat, which is essentially his own job description; hopefully he takes out his frustrating by clubbing ten more homers between now and the end of June. Brown had a big day with two hits, a walk, and the HBP; the walk is his first as a Sound. Two more steals off Kottaras.

Is Hunter Morris a legitimate 1B prospect?

I don't know why not. I think you pegged his biggest weakness so far (walks), but his power is legit. He reminds me a bit of LaPorta.

Fun fact: Kh Davis is now hitting .500/.522/1.050 for an OPS of 1.572 in day games...

It's hard to have a better day at the plate than Brock Kjeldgaard enjoyed on Tuesday, although a few of his teammates certainly tried.

Kjeldgaard's monster day was just one of many bright spots in a slugfest for Brevard County, which totaled 23 hits in a 19-9 win over St. Lucie in a Florida State League game that more resembled a video game.

Kjeldgaard went 3-for-6 with two homers and seven RBIs and was one of three Manatees to knock in at least four runs in the rout. Shawn Zarraga also went deep, Khristopher Davis plated four and former fourth-round pick Hunter Morris drove in four and scored five times.

The day belonged to Kjeldgaard, though, who drove in runs even when he didn't reach base. The designated hitter capped Brevard County's three-run outburst in the first with an RBI ground out, knocking home Morris. He hit an RBI single in the third, smashed a three-run homer in the seventh and added a two-run shot in the eighth.

The effort matched Kjeldgaard's previous high, which he set on July 16, 2010, when he went 4-for-5 with two longballs and seven RBIs against Charlotte, his first of three two-homer performances last year.

On the season, the Edmonton, Alberta, native is batting .227 with five homers and 21 RBIs. He went .245 with 17 homers and 75 RBIs last year with the Manatees after blasting 20 home runs for Wisconsin in '09.

Morris, an Auburn product who saw time with Team USA, had an RBI double in the first, a single in the seventh, another RBI double in the eighth and a two-run two-bagger in the ninth.

Zarraga went deep in the fifth, his second of the year. Brevard County was 11-for-20 with runners in scoring position.

The offense was enough to give reliever R.J. Seidel a win, despite the right-hander allowing five runs over two innings of work.

I didn't like the Nelson pick on draft day, and he didn't heat up last year in Helena untill I pointed out how crappy he started out the season in one of my recaps, so here's hoping history repeats itself.

Final: Beloit 7, @Wisconsin 0

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Manuel Soliman struck out 11 over six innings to lead the Beloit Snappers to a 7-0 shutout over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Soliman and two Beloit relievers combined to strike out 16 Rattlers batters and held Wisconsin to just three hits.

The evening started with Milwaukee Brewers reliever Zach Braddock making a rehab start for the Timber Rattlers (18-17). Braddock tossed three scoreless and hitless innings with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. The lefty tossed 33 pitches (24 strikes) in his outing.

But, Beloit (20-16) jumped on reliever Jimmy Nelson in the fourth inning. The first three Snappers to bat reached to start the fourth on a pair of singles and a walk. Daniel Ortiz drove in the first run with a fielder's choice. Then, Lance Ray tripled to drive in two runs.

The Snappers struck again in the fifth. There were two outs with none on base when Nelson gave up a double to Jamaal Hawkins and a walk to Nat Roberts. Michael Gonzales and Ortiz followed with consecutive RBI singles to make the score 5-0.

Nelson would hit Roberts with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth to force in a run and Beloit was up 6-0.

Roberts and Ortiz combined to score the final run of the game when Roberts tripled with one out in the ninth and Ortiz followed with an RBI double.

Wisconsin stranded nine runners on the evening. But, only Franklin Romero, Tyler Roberts, and Yadiel Rivera had hits - all singles - for the Rattlers.

Clinton Dempster struck out three in two innings and Jose Gonzalez struck out a pair in the ninth inning to shut out the Rattlers.

The Rattlers have been held off the scoreboard four times this season.

Wisconsin and Beloit continue the series at Time Warner Cable Field on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader. Austin Ross (4-1, 1.85) will start game one for the Rattlers and face BJ Hermsen (3-4, 4.46) in game one. Game two will feature Dan Britt (2-1, 7.50) as the starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit has Michael Tonkin (1-1, 6.98) as their starter in the nightcap.

Game one starts at 12:05pm. The second game will start thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games are scheduled for seven innings.

Man, three of the last four starters the Rattlers have faced have just dropped the hammer on them. On Friday, James Paxton struck out ten in six innings, then Taijuan Walker struck out 11 in 6.1 on Sunday, and now Soliman. Wisconsin got two runs total off those three pitchers. Chris mentioned that Braddock was 91-93 with his fastball. Nelson's had a tough year; with four more free passes handed out today, he's walked 22 in 33.1 innings, against just 20 strikeouts. Not what you want from your second-round, SEC-pedicured pitching prospect.

Final: @Jackson 5, Huntsville 3

Jesus Sanchez gave up three runs in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd, and that was too much for the Stars to overcome. Sanchez issued six walks in three innings. Roque Mercedes finally had a nice outing, striking out four over two scoreless innings. Darren Byrd also tossed two scoreless, and Michael Fiers contributed a perfect 8th. Erik Komatsu did his thing, singling, walking, and reaching on catcher's interference in four trips. The one out he made was a strikeout--that's two days in a row, Erik; don't let it happen again. Lee Haydel was 0-3 but walked twice. Steffan Wilson and Chuckie Caufield had two hits.

The Stars closed the gap to two runs on Cool Breeze's RBI single here but a potential rally was short-circuited:

Huntsville Top of the 5th
  • Lee Haydel walks.
  • With Matt Cline batting, throwing error by Anthony Vasquez on the pickoff attempt, Lee Haydel to 3rd.
  • Matt Cline walks.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a soft line drive to left fielder Jake Shaffer. Lee Haydel scores. Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Steffan Wilson flies out to right fielder Johermyn Chavez. Matt Cline to 3rd.
  • Brandon Jones lines into double play, right fielder Johermyn Chavez to catcher Ralph Henriquez. Matt Cline out at home on the throw.

Like TheCrew07, I did not like the Nelson pick last year and he's doing nothing to change my mind. The ground ball rate is nice but the 20/22 K/BB ratio from a college pitcher is just depressing.

Braddock anxious to help Brewers after strong outing in Rattlers' loss to Snappers

by Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE — Zach Braddock is eager to return to the big leagues and feels ready to rejoin the Milwaukee Brewers.

But the left-handed reliever has valued his rehab stint with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers — and not just from a physical standpoint.

Braddock, who threw three scoreless innings in his second rehab outing for the Rattlers on Tuesday night, feels he has made sufficient progress in dealing with the sleep disorder condition which landed him on the 15-day disabled list May 3.

After holding the Beloit Snappers hitless in a 33-pitch appearance, Braddock talked like a major leaguer who had gained perspective from his stay in the minors.

"I've enjoyed coming here," said Braddock, who started for the Rattlers, but didn't get a decision in a 7-0 loss to the Beloit Snappers. "It makes you realize where you came from and what you're thankful for. It also gives you insight into what this game is all about. It's about team."

As for his sleep disorder, Braddock didn't shed much light about his treatment, but said it's an issue he has battled for some time.

"I've been working with team doctors and it's been a pretty steady progression," he said. "It's something I've had most of my life, probably since puberty. But I feel healthy. I feel like everything is headed into the right direction. I'm excited about getting back (to Milwaukee)."

Braddock wasn't as overpowering Tuesday as he was Thursday when he struck out all five hitters he faced in a dazzling 22-pitch appearance against Cedar Rapids. But he was solid, retiring nine of the 11 Beloit hitters he faced. He threw primarily fastballs, clocking consistently in the low 90s and topping out at 93 mph.

"It wasn't as pretty as the last outing – it was a little more democratic," said Braddock. "I didn't feel any different than I did the other night. I felt good. I stayed around the strike zone and attacked hitters."

Braddock walked one, struck out two and didn't allow a hard-hit ball. The only other baserunner he allowed came in the top of the third when he fielded Daniel Santana's tapper back to the mound, but threw wildly to first. Santana reached second on the throwing error, but was gunned down moments later by strong-armed catcher Tyler Roberts while trying to steal third.

"He was pretty clean," said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. "The ball didn't come out of his hand as good as it did last time, but he was around the plate and I think he threw the ball where he wanted to."

Braddock could come off the Brewers' disabled list as early as today, but it's not clear when he will be activated by Milwaukee, or if he will remain longer with the Rattlers.

"I don't know what his next step is," said Erickson. "They (the Brewers) haven't released that to us to be honest. I think it's a day-by-day thing."
