nice AB by LuCroy right there. Guess he was paying attention to Walker's AB a half hour ago. Nice to get some runs back, too.

Some of you are chirping about having Lucroy bat 2nd. That sounds like a terrible idea. He would ground into DPs on the regular. It's either Hart or Gomez that should bat 2nd.

Yeah, it would be terrible having a guy with a .371 On Base Percentage bat in front of Braun and Prince. **FACE PALM** Gomez and Hart with their sub .300 OBP are much better options.

Yeah, and Lucory is totally going to keep that up the entire season. Surely Hart will continue to look awful all season.

Ummmm, I think he can. Thanks for making my point for me John. VICTORY!

Yes, one at-bat proves your point that he will have a .370+ OBP for the duration of the season. (although, a walk would've done the same amirite?)

He obviously should be ahead of Betancourt (hell, Gallardo should be as well), but putting him in the 2 slot is not good.

Betancourt's OBP is currently .252, remind me why he hits in front of Lucroy? Or anyone besides Nieves for that matter?

Well a lineup is not made by just putting guys in order of their average. You spread people out for speed and power reasons. You are not just going to stick the worst couple guys and the pitcher at the bottom of the lineup.

The thing is, even if Lucroy regresses a bit, I don't really realistic believe his OBP would drop below .330. With Hart's below average patience, he'd probably have to hit at least .280 to have that solid of an OBP. I'd rather have a guy like Hart bat 6th where his higher slugging percentage is more valuable and relatively low-ish OBP doesn't matter as much.

Check the link. When has he ever done anything besides get on base in his entire pro carrer?

EDIT: I never said he would stay at or above .371. I do think he will carry a better OBP that your suggested "better options" through out the year.

I don't really agree with the reasoning for keeping him there, but it IS really nice to have production at the bottom of the order/the 8 spot.

Of course it would probably be nicer to have that production out of the 2 hole....but I don't want to get into that argument, it's been beaten into the ground enough. Just keep hitting lucroy.

This will be poo-pooed around here, but I think a lot of the reason that Lucroy is going to be hitting at the bottom of the order is so he can focus on his most important job of the game: catching. He's 24 years old and is still learning how to call a game and if he gets put up at the top of the order, all of a sudden he's up in the first inning, and especially when on the road (since he'd bat right away) it may distract him from focusing on the other teams lineup and how to pitch to them.

You are not just going to stick the worst couple guys and the pitcher at the bottom of the lineup.

So you'd rather spread the worst couple guys in the middle of the best hitters? Creating outs significantly more often in front of Braun and Fielder? Or failing to get hits or on base when guys like McGehee and Hart have reached ahead of them? I guess we differ fundamentally on how to assemble a lineup.

According to MLB Gameday, the Pirates called a pitchout with Betancourt on 1st. Why?

Also, Lucroy heard you all talking about him.

To answer your question, Hart was on first, not Betancourt.

Umm please elaborate, Im not sure you have any idea what you are talking about. There have been studies on this in the book, here is the summary:

Your three best hitters should bat somewhere in the 1, 2 and 4 slots.

Your fourth and fifth best hitters should occupy the 3 and 5 slots. 1

and 2 guys should walk more often. Then order in decreasing skill from 6-9.

Thanks for pointing that out guy..... I didn't think I had to mention that considering he was a rookie catcher. What about his career stats make you think he can't get on base? That is what I should have asked.

It seems kind of relevant, considering it's his only exposure to major league pitching. And to answer this question, you're right...there isn't that much. He's a really good player, and is only going to get better. I hope he keeps getting on base like he is now, but I don't think it's going to happen. An OBP in the .330's seems like a fair guess to me, which is still very nice out of a catcher, but not someone you HAVE to put in the two hole

I think this is the reason Lucroy will continue to bat 8th. It's been my presumption all along, at least. I'm sure other young cathers like Wieters and Posey bat near the top of the lineup, so I'm not so sure why Lucroy couldn't, but it's at least a semi-logical reason.
