2011-05-11 Padres (Stauffer) at Brewers (Wolf) - [Brewers lose, 13-6]

Just poor execution from the guys in the bullpen today. RR can only put out there what he was given to work with. These guys get paid to get hitters out. They didn't do their job (understatement I know). The RR hate baffles me sometimes.

When the LOOGY (Stetter) gives up a hit to a lefty to lead off the innning and then he leaves him in to face two righties, which Stetter is horrible against it is 100% on RR. This mismanagment of the bullpen has been going on all year, and you wonder where the RR hate comes from?

If McClendon comes in and gives up the lead, then fine. That will happen. But for Roenicke to go to Loe, a pitcher that he's pretty much over-worked and abused the entire season long, a pitcher that has shown in the past week an increasingly ineffective ability to get batters out, a pitcher that before the game even Roenicke himself had said was off-limits...

That's entirely on the manager, and so is this loss.

This is exactly what I wanted to write...I'm just too frustrated to write it properly. Good post. It's not that we gave up the lead, that happens. It's that he went with Loe again, and everyone here almost knew what would happen. The only one surprised is RR. This one is on him, along with at least 1-2 others this year already.

I hate to say this, but the way we've played this year....we look much more like a 70-92 team than a 92-70 team.

Roenicke's bullpen management suck once again. He says Loe is unavailable, then uses him. Should've left Mitre in for the 7th, Hawkins 8th, Ax 9th, and we probably win the game.

easy to say in hindsight. I would guess that most people here would have jumped all over RR for having Mitre hit with a man on in the 6th.

At this point in his career, LaTroy Hawkins shouldn't be expected to throw more than 1 inning/20 pitches. His shoulder needs to be protected.

The point was made on an earlier page that the bullpen provided ~4 scoreless innings today. That will win you most games. Wolf's poor outing had ripple effects on the game even after he left. The Brewers needed 5-6 innings out of him today, and he couldn't get there. In hindsight, Russ' point about leaving Wolf in to take his beating doesn't look too bad. This one will sting more because the offense was able to rally to take the lead once Wolf left, but the short start hurt more than anything Roenicke did, IMO.

Much-needed off-day tomorrow, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Kintzler DL'ed for a fresh arm. I just hope it's Justin James and not Sean Green.

I would've just had him bunt. No big deal.

again, easy to say in retrospect. but that still gives you two outs. Bringing in a pinch hitter that gets on base increases the odds of getting to Braun/Fielder a lot more (which is huge in a one run game).

I'm not saying it's wrong if you have Mitre drop a bunt. But I don't have a problem with pinch hitting there. And neither would anybody had Weeks and Braun not popped up.

And I'm also not saying Roenicke did nothing wrong. I definitely don't agree with the whole Kotsay thing, or with using Loe AGAIN. But there's nothing wrong with pinch hitting for Mitre there.

Damn, Yahoo Game Tracker! Watching on yahoo at work, and it showed Stetter gave up 3 hits. I was assuming.

I cannot fathom how that group of hitters mustered 23 hits. Talk about an off day for the pitching staff, holy lord god.

Well, you put out the worst defense in... well... maybe ever... that will happen.

The sad part is that if the defense didn't play well today, it could easily have been 27-30 hits. They were all line drives.

"Russ' point about leaving Wolf in to take his beating doesn't look too bad."

I wanted Wolf to stay in there because I thought that most likely, he would pitch OK going forward. On the balance, pitchers who get rocked early settle down. Of course, he was already at 75 pitches so he didn't have much more quality innings left to give.
