Niagara Falls

chuckiehacks

My girlfriend and I are driving to Toronto for Memorial Day weekend and we've decided to go via Niagra Falls. We'll only be stopping there for an afternoon, not staying overnight. All I really want is to see some falls, take some pictures and move on.

Any tips on the best ways / places to do this without getting into all the tourist traps?

Go to the Canadian side. There are plenty of tourist traps but the area directly adjacent to the river is a park. So you should just be able to find a place along the river to park, take your pictures, and then move on. But if you want to see a wax museum or a house of glass, it's only a block away.

One tip- while you're there, make sure you go over the falls in a barrel. There's nothing like it. It's technically illegal so be ready to make your getaway but it is definitely something everybody should try at least once.

The view is better from the Canadian side. Though if you do only one touristy thing, the Maid of the Mist is pretty neat. Use a disposable camera that is water resistant.
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Yes, go to the Canadian side. I recommend staying overnight - they have plenty of nightlife there now with the casinos and good restaurants in the casinos and surrounding area. And make sure you eat at the Flying Saucer cafe. Yes, the restaurant looks like the proverbial "flying saucer" UFO. Actually, go by there at night - it is lit up with blinking colored lights like a proverbial "flying saucer".

Oh, and let the g/f go shopping or gambling while you make a little side trip to the Sundowner... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Hurricane Deck was pretty awesome too. You get to stand on a wood deck right below the falls. I also agree the Canadian Side is much more spectacular. It's also bugging me because Niagara is spelled wrong...but I get annoyed by little things like that.

The spelling is fixed now. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Sorry about that - I'm usually a spelling and grammar stickler, too.

Thanks for all the advice.

I couldn't remember the name, but that sounds like what I did when I was younger. I remember going though a tunnel and coming out onto a deck right next to the falls. It was very cool. I also remember Maid of the Mist. The only other thing I remember were natural gas busses, taking you to various spots along the Canadian side. This was 18 years ago.

I was there last summer, only on the Canadian side. Made of the Mist is worth the tour, great views. You WILL get wet! Lots of great vantage points above as well. Very clean park-like settings. Not very "touristy" right at the falls. Some shopping, casinos, restaurants etc nearby.
