The Stars will be playing whether there is stadium power available or not.

It would be tough to provide any type of broadcast if power is out. We've linked above to both the Stars' "couch-cast" and the more traditional Jacksonville broadcast. Today may be a day for some of you to at least briefly sample the Huntsville audio experiment.

Wily Peralta is pitching for the Stars.

Thanks, just adjusted the Daily Menu.

Both audio feeds are functional, by the way. Unfortunately, just listened to Peralta walk three consecutive batters with two down in the 1st...

EDIT: Groundout ends the inning unscathed.

Stars drop extra-inning contest to Suns
Huntsville Stars

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Huntsville Stars (15-10) dropped the series opener to the Jacksonville Suns (13-13) on Wednesday afternoon in a 7-5 contest that took 11 innings.

Catcher Martin Maldonado drove in the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to score center fielder Erik Komatsu. With Yancarlos Ortiz pinch running for Maldonado, he advanced to third on a throwing error by Suns catcher Kyle Skipworth. Chuckie Caufield lined out to end the inning and send the game into extra innings.

Reliever Roque Mercedes (0-2) gave up the game-winning run in the top of the 11th. Outfielder Kevin Mattison hit a double and scored on a ground out by third baseman Jim Negrych.

The Stars got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back lead-off singles from left fielder Lee Haydel and second baseman Sergio Miranda. Haydel scored on a ground out from right fielder Brandon Jones.

Jacksonville wasted no time getting that run back and then some. They put up four runs in the top of the second with a pair of doubles off the bats of first baseman Erik Lis and second baseman Ryan Curry. Negrych hit a two-run bomb to give the Suns a 4-1 lead.

Huntsville closed the game with two more runs in the fourth, with a lead-off double from shortstop Matt Cline. Pitcher Lucas Luetge followed up with his first hit of the season to advance Cline. Haydel brought him home with a single up the middle. Jones walked to load the bases. Reliever Corey Madden walked Steffan Wilson to score Luetge. The Stars put three runs on Suns starter Omar Poveda before he was pulled in the fourth. He gave up six hits and walked five batters without recording a strikeout.

The Stars added one more run in the eighth before tying it up in the ninth. Starter Wily Peralta got roughed up, going just 3.0 innings, his shortest outing of the 2011 season. He was tagged with four earned runs on four hits. He allowed four walks and struck out five.

The Suns and Stars play a doubleheader, two seven-inning games, tomorrow starting at 4:43 p.m. CST. Gates open at 4 for the double dose of Bud Light Thirst-Aid Thursday. All Bud Light and AmberBock 20-ounce drafts are just $2 through the fifth inning of the second game. Following both contests, fans can take their ID wristbands down to Sammy T’s Music Hall downtown Huntsville for free admission. Sammy T’s is the official after party of your Huntsville Stars! For tickets and more information, call (256) 882-2562 or visit huntsvillestars.com!

Peralta's been struggling with his control lately. Only 45 of his 84 pitches were strikes, and he hit a batter in addition to the four walks. At least he's still missing bats, I guess. Luetge did yeoman's work, turning in five scoreless frames in relief of Peralta; his hit was not only his first of the season, but the first of his pro career. Mercedes has now allowed 24 baserunners in 11.2 innings. Komatsu was 1-5 with a walk. Maldonado walked twice in addition to his clutch single. Ortiz was released after the game; he finishes his Milwaukee career 1-16. Hainley Statia, conversely, made his Brewers debut, pinch-hitting in the 8th and drawing a walk. We'll see if Statia, good with the glove, takes over Ortiz's role as a bench player or starts ahead of Cline, who's probably not a particularly good defensive shortstop and is hitting poorly.
The Stars' only baserunner in extras was a one-out single by Wilson in the 11th.

Final: @Dunedin 7, Brevard County 4

It wasn't that close; BC had to score three in the 9th to make it respectable. Hiram Burgos started and let in six runs (five earned) in five innings. Evan Anundsen made his first appearance since coming off the DL, and his first successful one since 2009, fanning three and grounding out two more over two scoreless innings. Shawn Zarraga brought his rarely glimpsed power bat to the stadium today, finishing a triple short of the cycle. D'Vontrey Richardson also knocked one out of the park (five-game hit streak!) and also singled, though, unsurprisingly, he was picked off first. Kentrail Davis had a very Kentrail day with a double, walk, and HBP. Scooter Gennett was 1-4, and Khris Davis and Hunter Morris each went 0-4. Morris also committed his fifth and sixth errors of the season (third and fourth at first base; two have come at third base).

Final: @Beloit 4, Wisconsin 1

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BELOIT, WI - Adrian Salcedo struck out eight Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night and took advantage of some early runs by his offense to pace the Beloit Snappers to a 4-1 win over their in-state rivals. Daniel Ortiz doubled twice and drove in a run to help Beloit end Wisconsin's three game winning streak.

The Snappers (15-9) struck first by plating a pair of runs in the first inning against Rattlers starting pitcher Matt Miller. A single and a hit batsman put two runners on base. Then, Michael Gonzales singled in the first run. An RBI double by Ortiz send the second run home for the Snappers.

Beloit extended their lead with a run on an RBI grounder by Andrew Leer in the second inning.

The Rattlers (10-13) came back with a run in the top of the fifth. Franklin Romero doubled to start the inning and extend his team high hitting streak to eight games. But, he was still at second with two outs. Nick Shaw sent Romero home with a two-out single to get Wisconsin on the scoreboard. But, that was all the Rattlers would manage on the evening.

Miller settled in after the second inning and shut down the Snappers for the rest of his night on the hill. He struck out three and walked one over 6-2/3 innings.

But, Salcedo didn't have to settle down. He scattered five hits and struck out eight over seven innings for the Snappers. Salcedo did not walk a batter and earned his second win of the season.

Beloit picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth off Thomas Keeling. Ortiz doubled to start inning. Then, pinch runner Jamaal Hawkins stole third. An RBI grounder by Kyle Knudson scored Hawkins and the Snappers were up 4-1.

Clinton Dempster struck out five over the final two innings and got his second save of the season.

The series continues on Thursday morning at Pohlman Field. Del Howell (0-3, 4.34) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Beloit sends Andrei Lobanov (0-1, 6.75) to the hill. Game time is 11:00am. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 10:40am.

This is the fifth time since 4/23 that the Rattlers have scored one or fewer runs in a game. Miller threw 101 pitches (68 strikes) and posted a 10/5 GO/FO. Amazingly, Keeling went 1.1 innings without walking anyone, though he did hit a batter. That is, I am almost positive, the longest free pass-free outing of his career. Shaw, with two singles, was the only Rattlers on base more than once. With five hits in the last two games, Shaw is trying to edge his batting average off the interstate; he's in Pennsylvania now, up to .176. Chris Dennis doubled, giving him an extra-base hit in each of his first three games with Wisconsin. Reggie Keen stole his 10th base. Tyler Roberts was 0-4 and allowed two stolen bases, but his caught-stealing percentage is still a healthy 50% on the year.

Final: @Oklahoma City 4, Nashville 3 (10 innings)

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Pinch-hitter Drew Locke belted a two-out homer in the bottom of the tenth inning to power the Oklahoma City RedHawks to a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday evening at RedHawks Field.

Facing Sounds reliever Donovan Hand, who had joined the club from Double-A Huntsville earlier in the day, Locke smacked a 1-0 offering over the left field wall for the game-winning blast, his second roundtripper of the season.

The loss was the eighth in the last nine games for Nashville (9-16), which has dropped the first three games of the series to the RedHawks. It was the third extra-inning game of the year for Nashville, which is 0-3 in those contests.

RedHawks reliever Sergio Escalona (1-0), who was being pinch-hit for by Locke when the game ended, was the beneficiary of the walkoff blast and earned his first win of the year after working two scoreless innings. Hand (0-1) took the loss in his first Triple-A appearance of the year.

The Sounds left runners in scoring position on five occasions, finishing just 1-for-10 with RISP in the contest.

An inning-opening walk came back to haunt Sounds starter Amaury Rivas as Oklahoma City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. J.B. Shuck drew a free pass to start the frame and later scored on Koby Clemens' two-out RBI single to left.

Nashville evened the contest at 1-1 in the second when Brett Carroll recorded a one-out single off RedHawks starter Jordan Lyles then raced around to score when shortstop Luis Figueroa followed with an RBI double to right.

Oklahoma City pulled back in front in the fourth when Collin DeLome (4-for-5) scored on Anderson Hernandez's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Rivas rallied to escape further damage, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position by recording two strikeouts to wrap up the inning.

Sounds left fielder Caleb Gindl (2-for-4) re-tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth when he slugged his first career Triple-A home run, a one-out solo shot to left on a 1-0 pitch from Lyles.

Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision. Lyles authored a quality start for Oklahoma City, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out nine batters in his six frames of action. Rivas turned in his shortest start of the season, allowing two runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings of work for the Sounds.

Newcomer Jordan Brown (2-for-5), acquired from the Cleveland Indians organization earlier in the week, gave the Sounds their first lead of the night at 3-2 when his two-out single off Gustavo Chacin in the top of the seventh inning plated Gindl with the go-ahead run.

Oklahoma City tied the contest for the third time in the home half of the eighth against Sounds reliever Mark DiFelice, who allowed his first earned run of the season in the frame in suffering a blown save.

Koby Clemens and DeLome opened the RedHawks' eighth with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners before Tommy Manzella bounced an RBI fielder's choice to second to plate Clemens with the tying run to knot the score at 3-3.

The Sounds will try to avoid a series sweep when the teams wrap up the four-game set with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Thursday night. Left-hander Sam Narron (0-0, 5.09) will man the bump for Nashville to take on Oklahoma City right-hander Sergio Perez (1-2, 4.44).

Rivas struck out four, walked three, and hit a batter. 57 of his 98 pitches were strikes. Great game from Gindl, who also double and walked. Brown, whose defensive reputation isn't exactly sterling, started in left field and in the cleanup spot. Eric Farris had a weird line, just 0-1 officially but with a walk, HBP, and two sac bunts. Maybe they were failed bunt hits, but if he (or any other Brewers prospect) never has two sacrifices again in a game it's fine with me. Mat Gamel was 1-5. Taylor Green did not start but pinch-hit late and grounded out.
Nashville Top of the 1st
  • Caleb Gindl doubles (2) on a line drive to center fielder Brandon Barnes.
  • Eric Farris out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Koby Clemens to first baseman Brian Dopirak. Caleb Gindl to 3rd.
  • Mat Gamel strikes out swinging.
  • Jordan Brown called out on strikes.

Sigh.

GAMEL ADJUSTING TO FIRST

Nashville infielder Mat Gamel had been almost exclusively a third baseman before this season.

But with Prince Fielder's free agency looming after the season, Milwaukee has decided to play Gamel at first this season in hopes he could transition to a big-league role should Fielder depart.

“It's been fine over there,” Gamel said. “Hopefully, this will just give me another opportunity to make it.”

Gamel has struggled at the plate of late, going 7 of 41 (.170) in the last 10 games. All but two of those hits came April 30 against Albuquerque.

“I feel good up there,” Gamel said. “They're just not dropping in for me. I'm not worried about my hitting. That will come around.”

CORPORAN HEADED TO THE DL

RedHawks catcher and former Brewer Carlos Corporan is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after fracturing his throwing hand in the fifth inning Wednesday.

Corporan stood up on a high pitch to Sounds pitcher Amaury Rivas but Rivas swung and caught Corporan's hand.

He stayed in the game after being attended to by the trainer but couldn't grip a bat and was replaced by Robinson Cancel, another former Brewer.

Corporan had the hand wrapped after the game but said it didn't hurt. He said he couldn't put much pressure on the hand.

“Hopefully, it'll be a quick thing,” he said.
