Who's more valuable: Boggs vs Green

monty57

It looks like Morgan will be back today, and according to this article, Roenicke wants to keep the 13th pitcher, which means that one of our bench players will likely be sent packing.

I just wanted to get your opinions, giving the current state of the team, as to who you would replace when Morgan returns and why. To me, it seems the 13th pitcher would have to be Green, while the "last bat on the bench" probably belongs to Boggs.

Green is completely expendable. McClendon (0.00), James (2.70), DiFelice (0.00), give them plenty of RH relief depth.

They don't really need Boggs either however once Morgan returns.

I think both get DFA'd to make room for Grienke and Morgan. That is unless they decide to option out Gallardo.

I think Boggs gets sent down today, and when Greinke's back Green will go tomorrow - Roenicke probably want's the extra pitcher in case Estrada struggles tonight so he'd have a sacrificial pitcher to burn innings up before sending him on his way. With all the extra inning games, injuries, and doubleheaders recently, RR has to be looking to keep the key guys in the pen fresh.

I thought it was kind of a foregone conclusion that Estrada would be sent down to make room for Grienke, meaning that if we keep 13 pitchers, Green would still be one of them.

I agree that it is very likely that Boggs is the one who will go. I guess my question is... If you were GM/manager, how would you handle the roster as we have players coming off the DL (Morgan, Grienke, and Almonte should all be off this week).

If we cut Boggs, our bench will be Gomez/Morgan, Counsell, Kotsay and Nieves. Is it worth keeping a "right-handed specialist" who hasn't been that special over an extra bat on the bench? And, when Almonte's healthy, will he just be let go, or will he be the one to replace one of the bullpen arms?

There's no question that Green is useless, but he'll still be kept. Boggs will go for Morgan and Estrada will go for Greinke to stay stretched out. The only chance Green goes is when Almonte returns, and at that point it's between him and Kintzler. I really hope that Roenicke and Melvin come to their senses and get rid of Green instead of Kintzler, but the easy move is to option out Kintzler.

Also it sounded like Parra was getting close to coming back too, likely this week per an article on brewers.com. I am guessing they will send out one of the lefties although Parra is slated to be long relief and thus won't be used in the same way Stetter or Braddock are.

I just hope that Almonte doesn't wind up back in Milwaukee. The guy is completely over his head at the plate and his defense is nothing to write home about. Green isn't needed in Milwaukee either. I'd love to see Defilice get a shot. He was spectacular in Milwaukee before his injury and is pitching well in Nashville.

The only value at all I see in Parra is that he's lefthanded and both the lefties in the pen have options so they can in theory keep all 3 in the system all year. The problem is Parra doesn't get lefties out very well and for a guy replacing either Stetter or Braddock, that is a major problem. I'd let him go and wouldn't look back. He's 28 and has never established himself. That's long enough for me.

Parra's stats as a reliever are pretty similar to Stetter's (save for the LH/RH splits) and he is two years younger.

IP WHIP SO/9 SO/BB ERA
Parra 62.1 1.339 9.7 3.05 3.19
Stetter 84.1 1.364 9.3 1.67 3.84

After the last half of last year, I'm actually pretty interested to see Parra as an RP full time.

In Stetter's role it's all about the LH/RH splits. Parra's relief stats include a lot of mop up work which I would tend to discount. Not saying they can't and shouldn't try to upgrade from Stetter too, but Parra usefulness out of the pen is that of a guy that can go more than an inning and they already have that.
