Pre-Draft Minor League Transactions

Brewer Fanatic Staff

From MLB Trade Rumors --

Brewers Acquire OF / 1B Jordan Brown from Indians for cash considerations

He's not on the 40-man roster, so although this is strictly a minor league transaction we'll link to a started thread on the Major League Forum for any discussion.

Rotoworld's history on Brown, we'll post other useful links a bit later, hopefully.

Per MLBTR, Brewers acquire 1B/OF Jordan Brown from Cleveland for cash considerations. He's in his 4th(!) year at AAA.

Career .305/.369/.471 MiLB (2523 plate appearances), .230/.272/.310 in 92 MLB plate appearances.

At Brevard County, RHP Evan Anundsen has been activated from the DL and will try to overcome major early-season struggles. Ground-ball machine Trey Watten, who had been pretty solid in eight brief relief stints before a disastrous outing on Sunday, heads to the DL. No word on the nature or severity of Watten's injury.

seems as if the brewers plan on cutting brandon boggs and aren't expecting him to accept being reassigned to nashville if he clears waivers.

Astute observation. Schroeder quoted Roenicke as them preferring to keep the 13th pitcher for now and with Morgan back, that's a likely scenario.

Jordan Brown has hit at AAA. He might be a useful bench bat down the road.

ROSTER MOVES: Earlier today, Timber Rattlers reliever Brian Garman was placed on the disabled list. Pitcher Eric Marzec has been activated from the DL and is available for tonight?s game against the River Bandits.

This seems to be the season for poor results followed by DL stints. Makes one think that several of these kids are pitching initially through injuries, albeit some may be minor.

From Huntsville Media Relations --

Pitcher Donovan Hand has been promoted to Triple-A Nashville. Hand split time between Huntsville and Nashville in 2010, but started the 2011 season with the Stars. In nine games with Huntsville, he allowed just three earned runs on 16 hits (2.38 ERA). He only allowed one walk while striking out 12.

In a related move, infielder Hainley Statia signed as a free agent and has now been assigned to the Huntsville roster. In 30 games with the Salt Lake City Bees (Triple-A LAA) last season, Statia hit .260 (25-96) with four doubles and 14 RBI.

With these moves, the Stars active roster stays at 24, the Southern League limit.

When we have an update regarding the corresponding move Nashville will make to accommodate Hand's addition, we'll let you know.

Wednesday's Nashville media notes make no mention of any roster moves. It almost appears as if Donovan Hand's transfer is a pre-cursor to, let's say, Mike McClendon joining the Brewers bullpen if necessary after a doubleheader workload. Regardless, consider Hand in roster limbo for the moment.

From the Stars:

HUNTSVILLE, AL. – The Milwaukee Brewers have made a couple of roster moves that will impact their Double-A affiliate Huntsville Stars prior to tomorrow’s doubleheader against the Jacksonville Suns.

Infielder Yancarlos Ortiz has been released from the organization. In nine games with the Stars, Ortiz was batting .063 (1-16). He started six games at either shortstop or second base for Huntsville.

In a related move, RHP Corey Frerichs has been promoted to Huntsville from High-A Brevard County. In six appearances with the Manatees, he rang up a 3.68 ERA (3er/7.1ip) with five walks and 11 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .125 batting average.

With these moves, the Stars active roster stays at 24, the Southern League limit.

No word yet on a backfill for Corey Frerichs on the Brevard County roster.

In order to make room for Donovan Hand in Nashville, the Brewers transferred little-used (at least at AAA) utility man Juan Sanchez to Patrick Arlis-land, also known as the temporary holding place called the Helena roster. No actual flight to Montana has to be taken, at least not until mid-June.

From the Stars:

HUNTSVILLE, AL. – The Milwaukee Brewers have made a couple of roster moves that will impact their Double-A affiliate Huntsville Stars prior to the second game of tonight’s doubleheader.

In a related move, pitcher Jameson Dunn has been transferred to Huntsville from extended spring training in Arizona. Dunn was signed as a non-drafted free agent by Milwaukee on January 15, 2011 out of Oral Roberts University.

With these moves, the Stars active roster remains at 24, the Southern League limit.

Huntsville has announced that catcher Dayton Buller has been placed on the DL (no injury status given). Buller pinch-hit Friday night. Jill Cacic of the Stars' front office notes that in nine games with the Stars, Buller is 4-for-26 (.154) with one double, one triple and five RBI.

The Stars now carry two veteran-type catchers on their DL, with Buller joining Shawn Riggans there. Martin Maldonado and Anderson De La Rosa remain active.

Taking Buller's spot is 29-year-old Andy Gonzalez, who like 25-year-old Hainley Statia, also recently added to the Stars' roster, was an independent league signee. Matt Cline and Sergio Miranda remain on the Stars' roster as capable of seeing time in the middle infield.

The Rattlers' Chris Mehring tells us that SS Carlos George has indeed hit the DL (he injured his leg trying to beat out a groundball Saturday).

The system's top shortstop prospect, Yadiel Rivera (just turned 19 years old last week), gets a chance to impress, moved up from extended spring training. Rivera is a rangy (OK, tall -- 6'3") native of Puerto Rico drafted in the 9th round last season.
