2011-05-02 Brewers (Gallardo) at Braves (Jurrjens) - 6:10 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 6-2]

Why are people acting like this is the first time Gallardo has been through a stretch like this? Here are some past six game stretches:

2010: 6 starts, 33.2 IP, 40 hits, 15 BB, 7.75 ERA

2009: 6 starts, 34.1 IP, 32 hits, 19 BB 5.24 ERA

2007: 6 starts, 31.0 IP, 42 hits, 10 BB, 7.55 ERA

He still finished with an ERA under 4 in both 2010 and 2009. Maybe everyone is just overreacting because this stretch is early in the season and the others were later in the season?

Good point, but I think the answer to your question is people were reacting like this every time he pitched with a + 7 ERA for 6 consecutive starts (or they were just busy complaining about Braden Looper, Dave Bush, etc.)
I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

I forget it if was last year or the year before, but there was a big thread about pitching abuse or maybe a couple threads? At any rate, I pointed out that everytime Yo posts an absolutely studdly gamescore, it's followed by 4-6 pretty average to poor starts. I hope at some point in his career he'll find more consistency, but he's never been very efficient with his pitch counts, going back all the way back to AA, he just wasn't efficient enough.

He'll get back on track, or at least I hope he gets back on track soon.

Aside from the 6th, Yo pitched a pretty solid game. People were saying he was nibbling, but I don't think he was at all. He sped up his delivery and seemed to attack hitters more early in the at-bat. A lot of the pitches that were balls were really close (I thought he got squeezed on quite a few), but I don't think they were borderline because he was trying to be too fine. In the 6th, yes, he started falling apart.

I think he needs to work on two things. First, and I haven't sat in front of the TV watching everything in super slo-mo, but it seems to me that his release point frequently ends up too high, resulting a ball that sails on him. Then he overcompensates and bounces pitches. Second, he needs to get his curve over for strikes more often. As the Braves announcers were saying (one being Tom Glavine), the hitters know he's having trouble getting the curve over, so they just sit fastball. Eventually he has to groove one and then they can tee off. Now, there wasn't much teeing off on Yo tonight, but when he couldn't find the plate in the 6th, it only took one good hit to ruin the night. There were times he got his breaker over well and he looked great when he did.

I don't think there's anything physically wrong. His fastball was hitting 94 consistently. He didn't look like he was laboring. Just still not finding the plate enough and I think it's mechanical.

And to the poster who said early on that Braun's first AB was "horrible," go watch it again. It was a great job of pitching. Gave him tough fastballs in and out that he couldn't do anything with and then threw a nasty slider/curve to strike him out. I actually wasn't overly impressed with Jurrjens tonight - his fastball seemed very hittable. But he pitched really, really well to Braun.

I'm more concerned about the offense than Gallardo. Braun and Fielder are coming back down to earth and the rest of the offense is still non-existent. There have been very few sustained rallies and big innings this year. They are making lots of outs on the basepaths with little to show for it--22nd in MLB in stolen bases and they probably lead the league in outs at home plate. They are also 22nd in walks which is even more scary considering they were 10th last year. I think you could argue that this team hasn't really found its "groove" yet, but you don't want to get too far behind when it looks like the Wild Card is going to come out of the NL East.

Yo will be fine--although our hopes for a Cy Young type campaign are virtually over. At least this will get rid of the potential All-Star game controversy.
