I count three swinging strikes. One to Gomes (a noted hacker), one to the catcher, and one to the pitcher. For a guy who lives by cutting down batters left and right, that's concerning. Also concerning is his total inability to throw a first-pitch strike. The only first-pitch strikes he's thrown have been put in play, and most of those hits.
That is my issue with Gallardo even when he is right. There is a reason why he can only go 6 innings every start. He has to go to deep counts on every batter it seems.

Brewers playing small ball down by 4. Gatta love it!

Sometimes good pitchers have bad results and bad pitchers have good results. It happens all the time in baseball so why is anyone surprised? I don't like when the Brewers are owned by some crappy starting pitcher but it doesn't happen to them anymore than anyone else.

Looking at Gallardo's ZiPS projection, not including today, his ERA projection has raised from 3.5 to 3.7. I'm surprised it's that much although it's not taking into account that all pitchers do worse in April on average.

Can someone explain to me why Roenicke always has Gallardo bunt? Let him swing the bat. Seriously.

LeCure looks really good because he's pounding the zone and the Brewers aren't seeing any balls fall. They aren't swinging and missing. Literally - no swinging strikes. They'll break through.

Lucroy is going to be a beast by the way. I'm thinking late 90s, early 00s Jason Kendall. Lest we forget Kendall was actually a beast too at one point.

He's looked really good so far. I love having a starting catcher who is competent with the glove and doesn't have a wet noodle bat.

To add to the Gallardo discussion- he has been worse- remember last August? He was awful from about mid-August until Labor Day, but rebounded nicely:

He loses command because of bad confidence or he loses confidence when he is lacking command?
I didn't order my thoughts perfectly. He's always struck me as a power pitcher with a finesse pitcher's mentality. He doesn't look particularly aggressive to me right now. It bothers me when I see guys like Wolf or Narveson attacking hitters and seeing results while Yovani nibbles around the corners trying to avoid contact early in the count.

I was really worried about that inning for a while. Two batters with first-pitch strikes lead to two strike-outs. It was encouraging to see Gallardo work around that leadoff double. Hopefully more of those hard-hit balls hit the grass against LeCure. I'm not impressed with this guy.

Trenni talked to a scout at the park about Gallardo;

I spoke with one scout in town for the Reds series after Gallardo's four run, first inning against the Reds and he told me there doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with Gallardo, but what sticks out the most, "he doesn't attack the strike zone enough."

The scout said every time he's seen Gallardo pitch, he's never had a "great" outing. He finds Gallardo constantly falling behind in the count and driving up his pitch count. He thinks the reason for his struggles has less to do with his stuff, but that Gallardo does not seem confident in his abilities. The scout says he should be more than confident in his pitches because he has a great curve, and a good slider, but he doesn't pitch with any trust. (And, much like Ron Roenicke he doesn't understand why Gallardo doesn't use his change up more.) The scout said that lack of trust leads him to "pick" and revert to always throwing the corners.

Reds broadcaster just said Yo had to be at the top of active pitchers in career home runs. Has he never heard of Carlos Zambrano?
This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Fielder will always have a great OBP, but there should be a correction factor for how much he limits baserunning once he's on - having to go station to station when the bottom of the order comes up does limit run-scoring chances, especially in the NL when the pitcher's spot comes up often during RBI situtations.

Well, we're back in this, but i'm fairly concerned that Yo has given up 10 baserunners already (through 4 innings)... maybe i'm unrealistic in my WHIP expectations, but it would sure be nice for Yo to keep that under 1.20 I think he'd be much more successful getting late into games if he could throw more early count strikes
