Gabe Gross Retires

jjkoestler
At this point in his career, Kotsay isn't a shell of the offensive player Gross was at that time.

Edit:

Kotsay since 2009: .253/.318/.372

Gross as a Brewer: .256/.357/.458

This is little more than a diversion from the fact that Gabe Gross save for about 200 AB's one year was terrible, and his value was greatly inflated by many on this board.

The fact of the mater is Gross was a terrible hitter, in particular the last couple years, and pretty poor for his career as a "power" hitting corner OF'er.

I also don't get why you're breaking up the numbers in this fashion. Why are we going post-09 for Kotsay and we're going back so as to include Gross's best season.

Hart was miserable that season, especially late. Having Gross to play against some righties would have been huge.

That's fine, but on a message board that preaches sample sizes so often, I don't see any viable argument against him being a poor hitter, one solid partial season notwithstanding.

My reasoning for doing so is to point out that Gross was a good option for the team at the time, and that Kotsay is not a good option now because he's been terrible the last few seasons.

At what time though? One 200 AB stretch. That's it. Yeah, Gross was a better option that year during that stretch, beyond that, there isn't much difference between the two.

The fact that there in any way comparable only goes to the argument that Gross was vastly overrated on here.

My point is that they aren't comparable.

I'm not sure what you're arguing. I'm looking at the duration that Gross was a Brewer. Gross was a good player when he was a Brewer and was the rest of the season that they traded him to Tampa. He had a .356 OBP against righties that year. Hart had a .291 OBP vs. righties that year. So yeah, he would have been useful.

I'm with Stevo. Gross was traded mid-season where we were in a playoff run. Hart had a .831 pre-All-Star-break OPS, and .659 OPS after the break. Many here lamented that we didn't have a LH RF to platoon with Hart, if not replace him entirely. Gross had a .776 OPS post-All-Star break that year.

Not a great player, but we sure could've used him after he was traded.
