They just mentioned this on MLB Network too, during the Reds/Diamondbacks broadcast. I wonder how long a "long, long time" is?

edit: I should clarify, the announcers didn't just mention the aforementioned tweet, they said there would be discussion after the game about the extension.

I don't know. I recall a tweet yesterday from someone (don't remember who...it wasn't a media person), claiming they heard some second hand info "from either Braun's agent or a friend of his" about Braun getting re-signed. At the time I didn't give it much thought, but now this story seems to have legs.

Here is the tweet from yesterday. Now the same person is mentioning a seven year deal.

5 year extension per Trenni and Brewers

If you follow "untuckem" on Facebook or Twitter they said this yesterday: "Um, did someone say 7-year extension for Braun. They did."

This is just huge news (obviously). Ryan Braun had said previously he wanted to be a Brewer for many years to come, and has now put his money where his mouth is. He is my favorite player, and now I'm glad to know I'll be able to cheer him on in Milwaukee for many more years to come.

This is a great day for the Brewers franchise and I look forward to Ryan playing his entire career in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. He is the Robin Yount of the younger generation of Brewers fans.

Agreed. Another nice aside is this basically kills any speculation that Mark Attanasio will be looking to sell the team in the near future.

You wonder if locking him up long term isn't a message to Fielder, showing him their commitment to winning? Not that I think he'll resign. But what I think is more likely is that the Brewers wanted to get some long term certainty with their biggest star so that they can ready offers for Greinke and Marcum. And in the process it shows both of them that they're serious about winning.

EDIT: Deal is for 5 yrs. 105 according to Rosenthal.

Wow, Thank You Ryan! I honestly didn't think he'd be here for his whole career, I thought it was just player speak. Man, I can't believe it. I seriously am just really happy with him and the franchise!

Good Stuff!

Braun will be 36 after the 2020 season, plus there's a mutual option for the 2021 season. The Brewers presumably must have backed a dump truck full of cash up to his house to get him to forego the possibility of hitting the open market anywhere near his prime.

Whether or not it's smart is something that can be debated once we get figures. Right now, it's very encouraging that a team like the Brewers can keep a player like Braun for what seems like his entire career.

Wow...amazing

I am surprised he wouldnt want to test the market and go somewhere to improve remetee shirt sales, but I'm not complaining. Now let's extend Marcum and Kotsay

Well, that's a good chunk of change, but he'll likely be worth it by then (assuming of course he stays healthy...knock on wood). I do think your speculation about Marcum and/or Greinke may be correct. My guess is that Melvin and company have moved on from any thought of re-signing Prince at this point

AMEN to this. If he stays healthy, he'll be pushing what, 2,300 hits? 400 homers at this point? He'll be the 2nd Brewer to (hopefully!) be going into the HOF as an 'exclusive' Brewer.

This shows the type of commitment one player can have to a team in spite of the Yankees and Red Sox of the world. I think this speaks volumes about the team, fans and people of Wisconsin when an elite player such as Braun commits to his entire career in Milwaukee. I love that he basically said no to any shot at free agency, where he undoubtedly would have made more money. One of the reasons Braun is beloved in Milwaukee and Prince will be just a guy when all is said and done. I love Prince but its apparent that its more about money than love for the team, town and community.

A great day as a Brewers fan.

I think it sends the message to Fielder that he welcome to leave because the team is being built around Braun. The money saved from Fielder will be spent elsewhere, like pitching.

Wow, I was just thinking about this the other day. I was thinking what a unbelievable deal the Brewers have right now with Braun and how you don't hear him complain too much about it.

This is really cool. I grew up watching Yount, Molitor, and Gantner as the faces of the Brewers. It's nice to know my son will have at least one player that he can always associate with the Brewers as he grows up. You just don't see this type of thing happen a whole lot anymore with small market teams and All Star caliber players. I liked Braun, but I have a whole new respect for him now. Not only as a player, but as person.

This is amazing. Braun and Aaron Rodgers are the recent past, the present, and apparently the long-term future of the Wisconsin sports scene. While Braun is a lot more Hollywood than Midwest, he will be right up there with Yount and Molitor by the time he hangs them up. If we can win a World Series within this contract I'd guess that he ends up as a Brewer lifer with a place in Cooperstown.

Interesting...I thought the exact opposite when I heard the news. Like this was a first step to ensuring the Brewers have their franchise player locked in before he sells the team. That may be more fear of losing Attanasio than actual logic.
