2011-04-20 Brewers (Narveson) at Phillies (Lee) - 12:05 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 4-3]

Who would you have pinch hit for Almonte? I get the impression that Morgan is not ready to play. That doesn't leave us with many options.

I thought that Kintzler looked excellent in the first inning and didn't see any reason to bring in Loe. (I assume that's who you are referring to with the more-experianced pitcher comment.) Loe is getting used a LOT right now with Saito and Hawkins out. Not need to burn up his arm in April.

(a) Pinch hit any left-handed hitting bench player: Kotsay, Kottaras, Counsell, Morgan. Results may not have changed, but I'd think that any of those four is a better option than Almonte at bat against the RHP. Might have gone with Kottaras, since the team's carrying 3 catchers anyway.

(b) Kintzler looked excellent in the 7th, but was it because it was against 7, 8, 9 in the order? Rolling the dice with Kintzler isn't shocking. But with Loe ending up in the game anyway, I probably would have gone with him against 1, 2, and 3 in the order.

Since it was a "gravy game," it's hard to really complain much at all, especially with a short bench and a bullpen not at full strength. But I'm not sure if Roenicke's decision making was determined by the short bench and bullpen, or is it indicative of his management style.

Tough break for NarvDawg. Impressive we were able to get 3 off of Lee and chase him after six innings.

I had the game on in the background while in the office. Rock mentioned a play a couple of times where Weeks wasn't hustling. It wasn't clear if he meant offensively or defensively. Anyone know what he was talking about?

Probably the play where he fouled off a pitch, assumed it was going to stay foul so didn't run to first and then it slowly turned fair and became fair just in front of the first base bag. Hard to fault Weeks for not running because I doubt anybody runs down to first on a ball like that. It actually reached the edge of the grass, maybe even onto the grass, before turning fair. I had looked and when it started to turn Weeks had his back to the ball.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

Can we not assume that the Phillies would have brought in a lefty (Contreras?) if the Brewers had PH a lefty for Almonte? Or was it a situation where Madsen is the 8th inning guy, so he stays in no matter what?

i don't think the phillies had anyone up in the bullpen, so it would have been Madsen regardless. I could be wrong, but I think madsen is the eighth inning guy so manuel wasn't looking to play matchups

Almonte looks like a minor league ballplayer. And I'm starting to buy into the concept of Betancourt being the worst player in MLB. He had an OBP of .288 last season. That is just brutal and inexcusable for anyone who doesn't have Gold Glove skills. At least with Gomez he gives us incredible defense, hustle and baserunning ability

Contreras is right handed. The lefty they may have typically had up, Romero, is hurt. It was Madson's inning
