Final: @New Orleans 2, Nashville 1

Nashville Sounds

METAIRIE, La. - The New Orleans Zephyrs used a pair of early home runs and a solid pitching performance to defeat the Nashville Sounds, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

With the defeat, Nashville (6-8) has now dropped six of its last seven contests. It was the Sounds' sixth one-run loss of the year.

All three runs in the contest came on solo home runs as the two pitching staffs combined to allow only six total hits on the afternoon (four hits by Nashville, two hits by New Orleans). The Zephyrs made the most of their two knocks on the day - both left the yard.

New Orleans right fielder Bryan Petersen gave the home club an early 1-0 lead when he led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer to right-center off Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz. The blast, which came on a 2-1 pitch, was the outfielder's second longball of the season.

The Zephyrs doubled their advantage to 2-0 in the second with another leadoff roundtripper, this one off the bat of left fielder Chris Aguila, his second of the year.

After placing runners on base in each of the first three innings but coming up empty, the Sounds finally got a run back in the top of the fourth when Brendan Katin slugged his team-leading fourth home run of the year, a one-out solo shot to left off New Orleans starter Tom Koehler.

After Katin's longball, New Orleans pitchers combined to face the minimum the rest of the way. The next 13 consecutive Nashville batters were set down in succession before Eric Farris singled with two outs in the top of the eighth, but he was caught stealing to end the inning.

In the contest, Farris went 2-for-4 to extend the Sounds' longest hitting streak of the young season to five games.

Milwaukee Brewers All-Star outfielder Corey Hart played in his second rehab game with the Sounds and went 0-for-3 before being removed in the middle of the sixth inning. He is hitless in five at-bats in his two contests with Nashville.

Koehler (2-0) turned in a quality start for the Z's, holding the Sounds to one run (on Katin's homer) and three hits over his six innings of work.

Burke Badenhop and Dustin Richardson each worked a scoreless frame of relief for New Orleans, with Richardson picking up his first save of the year.

De La Cruz (0-1) also worked a quality start but took a hard-luck loss for Nashville. He allowed only two hits (both were solo homers) while striking out nine batters during his seven frames of action on the afternoon. His 103-pitch effort matched the longest outing by a Sounds starter this season.

Mark DiFelice followed De La Cruz on the hill for Nashville and struck out two of his three batters faced.

The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. meeting on Thursday night. Left-hander Sam Narron (0-0, 5.59) will man the bump for the Sounds and face New Orleans right-hander Adalberto Mendez (1-1, 5.40).

Nice to see Katin back in the lineup for the first time since Saturday. Farris played second base and was caught stealing again, the third time already against just two successful thefts; he also committed his second error. Taylor Green was on twice with a single and a walk. Mat Gamel was 0-4, breaking his on-base streak. Brandon Boggs did not start but pinch-hit late and popped out. De la Cruz has quietly struck out 20 batters in 17.1 innings this year.

Farris was thrown out trying to get into scoring position late in what was surely a frustrating game:

Nashville Top of the 8th
  • Anderson Machado lines out to right fielder Bryan Petersen.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Brandon Boggs replaces Frankie De La Cruz.
  • Brandon Boggs pops out to shortstop Ryan Klosterman.
  • Eric Farris singles on a fly ball to right fielder Bryan Petersen.
  • With Taylor Green batting, Eric Farris caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Brad Davis to shortstop Ryan Klosterman.

Final: @Chattanooga 3, Huntsville 1

Chattanooga Lookouts

Starting pitching has been the key to the recent success of the red-hot Lookouts, winners of eight out of the last nine games, and Will Savage continued that current trend on Wednesday afternoon for Chattanooga. Savage upped the streak to eight straight games in which a Lookouts' starting pitcher has yielded two or less runs by throwing six shutout innings en route to a 3-1 Lookouts' win over the Huntsville Stars at AT&T Field.

Scott Van Slyke continued with his constant terrorization of the Huntsville pitching staff by slamming a solo shot in the second inning off of Jesus Sanchez (1-1).

It would not be until the bottom of seventh inning that another run crossed the plate. Pedro Baez and Jaime Pedroza began the rally with walks. Anthony Jackson then loaded the bases by reaching on a bunt single. Elian Herrera followed with a force out at second, plating Baez in the process. Dioner Navarro, making his debut for the Lookouts on a Major League rehab assignment, singled to put the score at 3-0.

Huntsville scored their lone run of the game in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Sean Halton. Josh Lindblom came in and shut the door on the Stars in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.

The Chattanooga Lookouts and Huntsville Stars will continue their five-game series at 7:15 P.M., tomorrow.

Sanchez allowed just the one run in five innings but was wild, walking four and only throwing 54 of his 95 pitches for strikes. Roque Mercedes allowed the other two Chattanooga runs. Steffan Wilson had a three-hit day, and Lee Haydel contributed two from the leadoff spot. Erik Komatsu was 1-4.

The Stars got a leadoff single in three of the first five innings but couldn't score--couldn't even advance the runner to second, actually. The 7th, when it was still a 1-0 game, was terrible:

Huntsville Top of the 7th
  • Steffan Wilson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Anthony Jackson.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a ground ball to center fielder Anthony Jackson. Steffan Wilson to 3rd.
  • Matt Cline reaches on a fielder's choice out, pitcher Justin Miller to catcher Dioner Navarro. Steffan Wilson out at home. Erik Komatsu to 2nd.
  • Dayton Buller walks. Erik Komatsu to 3rd. Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Chuck Caufield replaces Donovan Hand.
  • Chuck Caufield grounds into double play, third baseman Pedro Baez to catcher Dioner Navarro to first baseman Scott Van Slyke. Erik Komatsu out at home.

They finally got on the board, without a hit, thanks to some charity:

Huntsville Top of the 8th
  • Lee Haydel reaches on throwing error by pitcher David Pfeiffer. Lee Haydel to 2nd.
  • Sergio Miranda strikes out swinging.
  • With Sean Halton batting, throwing error by David Pfeiffer on the pickoff attempt, Lee Haydel to 3rd.
  • Sean Halton out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Anthony Jackson. Lee Haydel scores.
  • Brandon Jones lines out to pitcher David Pfeiffer.

Final: Brevard County 5, @Clearwater 4

Adrian Martinez/Clearwater Threshers

CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Threshers tied a season-high in hits with 15 but lost to a Brevard County team that managed just six on Wednesday afternoon at Bright House Field. With the score tied at four in the ninth, Khris Davis (4) launched a solo home run to give the Manatees a 5-4 victory in the opening game of the series.

The Manatees erased a three-run lead in the seventh inning with four runs, and later grabbed a 4-3 lead. Clearwater was able to even the game at four when Alan Schoenberger laced an RBI single to score D'Arby Myers.

Troy Hanzawa put the home team in front in the fourth inning with an RBI triple that scored Travis Mattair. Cesar Hernandez brought Hanzawa around when he laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line that rolled all the way to the base before finally resting to stop.

Another run came across for the Threshers in the fifth as Darin Ruf drove home Leandro Castillo on a base hit up the middle.

The lead was plenty for Clearwater starter Tyler Cloyd who hurled six innings of one-hit ball, fanning four hitters and allowing no base on balls. Joe Esposito came on afterward and struggled, giving up a three-RBI double to Brevard's Shea Vucinich. A single after that by Brock Kjeldgaard gave the Manatees the temporary lead.

A pair of Threshers finished the afternoon with three-hit games as Brian Gump went 3-for-5 and Bob Stumpo finished 3-for-4. In fact, Mattair was the only hitter for Clearwater that did not record a hit, however he did draw a walk and later scored.

Clearwater's best chance to retake the lead came in the bottom of the seventh when it loaded the bases with one out. Brevard's Mark Willinsky (1-1) induced a double-play ball afterward to get out of the jam. Despite giving up a run the next inning, Willinsky was still the recipient of the win and Santo Manzanillo (1) worked a perfect ninth inning for the save.

The Threshers fall to 8-6 on the year while the Manatees improve to 5-9. Game two of the series is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday night when Julio Rodriguez (1-0) faces Brevard's Maverick Lasker (0-2).
Adrian Rosario was on the bump for the Sea Cows and wasn't nearly as effective as last time out, allowing two runs in four innings on seven hits and two walks, fanning just one. Khris Davis had a perfect day, 3-3 with a HBP. The homer was already Davis's 4th of the year; unsurprisingly all have come on the road--Space Coast Stadium is a cruel mistress when it comes to right-handed power hitters. Kentrail Davis had BC's 6th hit. Scooter Gennett, Hunter Morris, and D'Vontrey Richardson went hitless, though Morris drew his second walk of the year--and second in the last three games. Improved patience would do a great deal for Morris's prospect status. Richardson committed his first boneheaded unfortunate baserunning error of the year, getting picked off first, but showed off his strong arm by gunning a run down at home. Kentrail Davis also notched a baserunner kill at the plate. Threshers first baseman Joe Savery, a first-round pick as a pitcher in 2007, went 2-5 to lower his average to .510.

The Clearwater writer said the Threshers' best chance to retake the lead was in the bottom of the 7th; call me crazy, but the 8th was looking pretty good until Richardson let his arm do the talkin:

Clearwater Bottom of the 8th
  • Travis Mattair flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
  • D'Arby Myers singles on a fly ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis.
  • Troy Hanzawa grounds out, second baseman Ryan Gennett to first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard. D'Arby Myers to 2nd.
  • With Alan Schoenberger batting, D'Arby Myers advances to 3rd on a balk.
  • Alan Schoenberger singles on a fly ball to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. D'Arby Myers scores.
  • Robert Stumpo singles on a soft fly ball to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Alan Schoenberger out at home on the throw, center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson to catcher Michael Roberts.

I have no idea what happened on that play that led to Schoenberger trying to score from first on a soft fly ball, but it worked out okay. The 'Tees' big inning, also including a runner thrown out at home:

Brevard County Top of the 7th
  • Ryan Gennett called out on strikes.
  • Kentrail Davis singles on a fly ball to right fielder Brian Gump.
  • Hunter Morris walks. Kentrail Davis to 2nd.
  • Khristopher Davis singles on a fly ball to right fielder Brian Gump. Kentrail Davis to 3rd. Hunter Morris to 2nd.
  • Shea Vucinich doubles (4) on a line drive to left fielder D'Arby Myers. Kentrail Davis scores. Hunter Morris scores. Khristopher Davis scores.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a fly ball to left fielder D'Arby Myers. Shea Vucinich scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd on the throw.
  • Pitcher Change: Derrick Loop replaces Joseph Esposito.
  • With D' Vontrey Richardson batting, passed ball by Robert Stumpo, Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Travis Mattair to catcher Robert Stumpo. Brock Kjeldgaard out at home.
  • With Michael Roberts batting, D' Vontrey Richardson picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Derrick Loop to first baseman Joe Savery to shortstop Troy Hanzawa.

Richardson was batting 8th, so light-hitting catcher Mike Roberts was the next batter up; certainly not ideal to get picked off there but I can excuse the aggression. Revised from "boneheaded" to "unfortunate".

Khris Davis has some serious power. I hope he can be fast tracked. Any chance he moves to 1st base? Brewers are sort of set at the corner outfield positions for a few years.

They're pretty set at 1B, too, imo -- Gamel*, Halton, Morris, Kh. Davis (if he's moved there). If Morris can have the kind of year I hope he can, suddenly the Brewers aren't without an impact bat in the system anymore; not to mention Kh. Davis. Can we start calling him KhD? Or would that just imply that he has a doctorate in whiffing? A doctorate in Khrushing?

* I say they're pretty set at 1B primarily because I think Gamel will man that position for the next 6 seasons or so. Wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea to move Kh. there, though. Just that he & Morris aren't on too dissimilar a timeframe, but I guess Morris could keep trying to stick at 3B.

Plus Codie Hawn. Before I got down to Homer's post, I was thinking about Kh. Davis at 1B, but I'd prefer he stay in LF for now and learn 1B later if necessary (yeah, I know 1B defense isn't simple, but his defense in LF might be better than Braun's...)
