Important updates re: the Huntsville broadcasts --

There has been a change in announcer just prior to the season.

The new broadcaster is John Pearson, former sportscaster of WTMJ in Milwaukee and formerly of WHNT in Huntsville. So that's excellent that someone with at least a partial Milwaukee background was hired.

We're waiting to hear back from Huntsville staff (who are of course extremely busy today), so we're yet to find out about a pre-game show start time, whether audio will be archived, etc.

We also can't say for sure whether the links provided by MiLB.com (listed above in the daily menu) will be valid or not.

However, Stars' GM Buck Rogers passed along the following --

For those that want to log in and watch John Pearson, former sportscaster of WTMJ in Milwaukee and formerly of WHNT in Huntsville, John is our new broadcaster and he’ll be streaming live on U Stream every home game this season. Go to www.ustream.tv and search for huntsvillestars (one word). Tonight John takes Minor League Baseball broadcasts onto the next level with The Living Room Show. If you set up an account you’ll be able to interact. Web cameras will be in play. The broadcast game has changed. We think you’re going to like this! All of you bloggers in Milwaukee, you’ll be able to get your info out there and be a part of the show.

This is potentially very interesting and exciting. I've set up my account, and may try to squeeze in a visit tonight, but if others can do so as well and even just sample things tonight, please report here what you thought of the fan experience. It will take a bit for John and staff to work out any bugs or kinks, but it seems very ambitious and we wish the Stars' staff well with this endeavor. We'll all go into it with an open mind and a winning attitude!

Eric Farris is back from his minor foot injury, so Taylor Green returns to third base, making Chris Nowak a bench bat for today's Nashville game.

Edwin Maysonet is out, but it's Anderson Machado, and not Farris, who gets the starts at shortstop.

We need Stu Paul to just flat-out ask Eric about the shortstop questions we have for Farris in his next pre-game interview.

An interesting start for Mark Rogers, everything looks good for him except those walks. The fact he's only 25 and is arguably still developing leaves some hope that he could yet improve on his command, but one has to wonder by how much.

That said, the fact he was able to throw 97 pitches and get into the 6th is a good to see after the shoulder problem in spring, just frustrating that almost half were balls. I wasn't able to listen while he was throwing, did anyone catch what his velocity was?

I didn't listen, but I was watching Gametracker through the first 4 innings. Rogers only had 1 walk through 4 innings, but he was still all over the place. When he missed, he was missing by a lot.

Hmm...'way outside' doesn't sound too comforting, was kind of hoping part of that was being squeezed. I mean, no matter what happens, he'll likely be in the majors based off his talent. It's just a matter of whether he'll be a starter or in the pen.

I do wonder though if fatigue had anything to do with the consecutive walks he issued late though.

Randy Johnson was 29 before he got his pitches under control... Nolan Ryan was in his 30s before he was under 5BB/9IP...

Final: @Nashville 6, Oklahoma City 1

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds continued their winning ways on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium, posting a 6-1 victory over the Oklahoma City RedHawks in the third game of a four-game series.

With the win, the Sounds (5-2) notched a winning record during their opening homestand, which concludes tomorrow evening.

Nashville pitchers permitted just one unearned run in the contest to lower the team's ERA to 2.08 through seven games of action. In all five of the Sounds' victories, they have held the opposition to exactly one run.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run off right-hander Mark Rogers, the Milwaukee Brewers' top prospect, who made his second start of the year for the Sounds. With one out, Nashville center fielder Brett Carroll dropped a fly ball hit by Tommy Manzella, who scored one batter later on a fielder's choice RBI grounder from Anderson Hernandez.

Rogers allowed just the one unearned run on three hits over his 5 1/3 innings and took a no-decision in his third career Triple-A start. He walked four batters and struck out three, throwing 97 pitches (50 strikes).

Nashville - which failed to score after having a one-out, bases-loaded opportunity in the fourth - rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth against Oklahoma City starter Sergio Perez, taking advantage of a double error on RedHawks third baseman Oswaldo Navarro.

After Brendan Katin flew out to open the inning, Carroll hit a routine ground ball to third, which was bobbled by Navarro. Then, the infielder tried to glove scoop the ball back to the pitcher and misfired past the home plate circle, allowing a hustling Carroll to reach third on the play. Brandon Boggs followed with a game-tying single to right as Carroll scored in unearned fashion. Catcher Martin Maldonado (3-for-4) followed with a go-ahead double to right that plated Boggs for a 2-1 advantage.

The Sounds padded their cushion against the Oklahoma City bullpen in the sixth, plating four runs to extend the lead to 6-1.

Carroll's one-out, bases-loaded bloop single to shallow left-center off Ross Wolf plated a pair of runs. Carroll (1-for-3) has hit safely in six of Nashville's seven contests this season. Boggs (2-for-3) followed with an RBI single through the right side of the infield.

The final run of Nashville's four-run sixth was scored when, with runners at the corners and one out, Maldonado struck out while Boggs broke for second and got caught in a rundown. Carroll again was alert on the basepaths and raced home before the RedHawks' defense applied the tag on Boggs to complete the double play.

Sounds right-hander Tim Dillard (2-0) retired his only two batters faced to record the victory in relief of Rogers. The victory was Dillard's 32nd all-time for the Sounds, moving him to second place in franchise history (trailing Keith Brown's 35 wins).

Perez (0-1) took a hard-luck loss following a quality start for Oklahoma City. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out seven in his six innings of work.

Nashville third baseman Mat Gamel went 0-for-4 with a walk on the afternoon to bring his team-best four-game hit streak to a close.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Thursday evening. Right-hander Josh Butler (1-0, 0.00) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City southpaw Ryan Rowland-Smith, who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the season.

It will be Taco Bell Throwback Thursday at the ballpark. The Sounds will wear their 1980s style retro jerseys on the field, while fans can enjoy discounted pricing on several concessions items ($2 hot dogs, $2 beers, $2 soft drinks, $2 popcorn, $2 nachos).

Obviously Rogers is still battling his control. No word yet on how hard he was throwing. Listen to Maldonado's RBI double here. Boggs also drew a walk, but that caught-stealing was already his third of the year against just one successful theft. Taylor Green doubled and walked, as did Eric Farris in his return to the lineup. In addition to the mixed bag mentioned above, Carroll also had an outfield assist.
Rogers walked the first batter of the game and then didn't issue another free pass until the 6th, when he walked three consecutive men with one out before being removed for Dillard, who got him out of the jam; however, it's not as if he was a paragon of control in the interim, throwing 30 balls and only 27 strikes on pitches not put in play (h/t Alex Tomter for the idea).

Peralta is by far my favorite Brewers prospect. Just so much potential there.
Coming into the year, I was worried about the dip in his strikeout total last season. I expected Scarpetta to surpass him on the prospect pecking order while in AA. Obviously it's only been two games but I'm thrilled Wily is making me feel foolish. His stat line tonight is terrific.

For a more traditional audio call of the Huntsville game, the Carolina audio feed can be found at the MiLB page link. We'll be making a regular habit of linking to the visitors' feed as well for each Joe Davis contest.

Turns out the actual game action can't legally be streamed by the UStream link, all they can show is fan shots and in-between inning fan entertainment action. Sigh...

I really can't find the words to comment on the experiment the Stars are undertaking here. That's probably the most polite I can be at this time.

Regardless, it's the action on the field that matters. Go Wily, go Stars.

Final: @Cedar Rapids 6, Wisconsin 4

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a 4-0 lead over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field. But, the Kernels rallied for four runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth to top the Rattlers 6-4. Ricky Alvarez singled in the tying run in the sixth and the go-ahead run in the eight as walks and errors by the Rattlers allowed the Kernels to mount their comeback.
TJ Mittelstaedt gave the Timber Rattlers (4-3) a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning.??

Wisconsin broke out with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jason Rogers started the frame with a single and a stolen base. A wild pitch on a walk to Mike Walker put runners at the corners. Greg Hopkins singled to score Rogers. Later in the inning Cameron Garfield grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to score Walker from third base. Mittelstaedt was next and he drove a home run to rightcenter for a solo homer and a 4-0 lead.

??Rattlers starting pitcher Matt Miller kept the Kernels (3-4) off the board through five, but ran into trouble with one out and the bases empty in the bottom of the sixth. A hit batsman and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Cedar Rapids. David Harris, who just joined the Kernels today, lined a double to right-center to clear the bases and knock Miller out of the game.

??Alvarez greeted Wisconsin reliever Stosh Wawrzasek with an RBI single to tie the game 4-4.??

In bottom of the eighth inning, the Rattlers defense buckled. Wawrazasek retired the first batter. Ryan Jones was next and he sent a grounder to short. The throw was off, but the tag was applied by Cody Hawn. However, the ball popped free to allow Jones to reach. Wawrazasek shattered the bat of Harris on the next at bat, but the ball dropped into shallow left-center just out of the reach of a pair of Rattlers fielders to put runners at first and second with one out.??

Eric Marzec came into the game to face Alvarez, but the result was similar to the sixth inning. Alvarez welcomed Marzec to the game with a single to right to drive in the go ahead run. The throw went to third and was wild for another error. A passed ball allowed the final run of the inning to score and give Cedar Rapids a 6-4 lead.??

Kevin Johnson came out of the Kernels bullpen and tossed a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to nail down the save.
The final game of Wisconsin’s brief four game road trip is Thursday night against the Kernels. Jimmy Nelson (0-0, 1.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids sends Justin La Tempa (0-0, 13.50) to the hill. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in to AM1280 WNAM or www.timberrattlers.com to hear the broadcast starting with the Miller Lite Pregame show at 6:15pm.
The Timber Rattlers return home on Friday night to start a three game series against the Peoria Chiefs. Game time on Friday at Time Warner Cable Field is 6:35pm. Tickets are available for all six games of the homestand between April 15 and April 20. Call the Timber Rattlers box office at 800-WI-TIMBER or (920) 733-4152 during regular business hours.

Tough loss for the T-Rats, but Miller pitched very well for five innings. His final line: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 HBP, 5 K, 6/2 GO/FO, 85 pitches, 47 strikes. Mittelstaedt also singled, so he had a nice night. Hopkins had two hits, and Walker did twice. Jason Rogers was back at DH but that didn't stop him from stealing second both times he was on. Tough to blame Nick Shaw for his two errors at shortstop when he hasn't played there much, especially if we're going to beg the front office to move other second basemen to short.

Final: Brevard County 11, @Tampa 5

Tampa Yankees

Tampa, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees and the Brevard County Manatees faced off tonight at George M. Steinbrenner Field in the third and final game of this series. The Manatees won the three hour and seven minute game 11-5. The starting pitcher for Tampa was Sean Black (2.38 ERA) and for Brevard County was Hiram Burgos (1.29 ERA).
Tampa started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Neil Medchill hit his second homerun of the season to put the Yankees up 1-0.

Brevard County quickly tied the score in the top of the fifth when Scott Krieger singled and advanced to second on a ground out from Shea Vucinich. Shawn Zarraga singled scoring Kreiger making it a 1-1 game.

The Manatees called to the bullpen in the bottom of the inning to bring out Evan Anundsen. Burgos went four innings giving up four hits and one earned run. Abe Almonte led off the inning with a walk, and scored after Carmen Angelini tripled. Rob Lyerly singled and Angelini went home to put the Yankees on top 3-1.

Extending the T-Yanks lead by one in the bottom of the sixth, Medchill walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Walter Ibarra grounded out and moved Medchill to third. Abe Almonte grounded out as well, scoring Medchill for a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Manatees bats got hot as Preston Claiborne came in to pitch with one out on the board and a runner on first. Black threw six and one third innings giving up six hits, two earned runs, and striking out six. Brock Kjeldgaard was on first and stole second. He advanced to third when Vucinich flew out to right. Zarraga tripled to bring home Kjeldgaard, putting the Manatees down 4-2.

The hitting streak continued into the eighth when Hunter Morris and Khris Davis hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game 4-4.

Tampa scored another run in the bottom of the inning after Trey Watten came out to the mound replacing LaTroy Hawkins who threw one inning. Zoilo Almonte tripled and scored on a single from Ibarra.

Brevard County exploded for seven runs in the ninth to take the game 11-5. The two teams face each other next week in Brevard County for a three game series.

Boy, you can tell most of that recap was written by the 8th inning, eh? Burgos struck out three and walked three. Anundsen gave up three runs and has gotten hammered in both of his outings so far this year after missing almost all of last year with shoulder problems. Jon Pokorny pitched a perfect 9th for what would have been a save had the Manatees stopped scoring a few runs earlier. Scooter Gennett is starting to bust out--three hits tonight, including a triple. Zarraga also had three hits and in fact was a homer short of the cycle. Morris and Khris Davis both singled to go with their yardwork. Kentrail Davis joined the fun with two singles. Chris Dennis didn't start but pinch-hit late and was intentionally walked.

Whee!

Brevard County Top of the 9th
  • Brock Kjeldgaard walks.
  • Shea Vucinich grounds into a force out, third baseman Robert Lyerly to second baseman Walter Ibarra. Brock Kjeldgaard out at 2nd. Shea Vucinich to 1st.

Final: @Huntsville 6, Carolina 5

Wily Peralta was the man in the early going tonight, striking out five of the first six hitters he faced and needing only 22 pitches to do it. He still ended up with a very nice line: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, 6/2 GO/FO, 77 pitches, 55 strikes. Check out that ball/strike ratio; combine that with the fact that he kept the ball down (well, except for the homer he allowed leading off the 7th) and you possibly are witnessing the historic merger between '09 Wily Peralta and '10 Wily Peralta, which is a frightening beast indeed. Darren Byrd continues to do his best Brandon Kintzler impersonation, striking out all three batters he faced. Michael Fiers came in for the save in the 9th but allowed two runs while only recording one out (Sickels jinxed him), leaving Roque Mercedes to bail him out. At the plate, the Stars scored five of their six runs in the 1st inning. My man Lee Haydel was on three times with a single and a walk, though he did strike out for the first time this year (pick it up, Haydel), was caught stealing, and committed a fielding error. Sergio Miranda and Chuckie Caufield had two hits each; Caufield, Sean Halton, and Juan Sanchez each doubled. Erik Komatsu didn't start but subbed in late in right field.

Whee!

Huntsville Bottom of the 1st
  • Lee Haydel singles on a line drive to center fielder Denis Phipps.
  • Sergio Miranda reaches on fielding error by first baseman Neftali Soto. Lee Haydel to 3rd. Sergio Miranda to 2nd.
  • Sean Halton grounds out, second baseman Cody Puckett to first baseman Neftali Soto. Lee Haydel scores. Sergio Miranda to 3rd.
  • Brandon Jones walks.
  • Steffan Wilson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Denis Phipps. Sergio Miranda scores. Brandon Jones to 2nd.
  • Chuck Caufield singles on a line drive to center fielder Denis Phipps. Brandon Jones scores. Steffan Wilson scores. Chuck Caufield to 3rd. Throwing error by center fielder Denis Phipps.
  • Dayton Buller singles on a ground ball to center fielder Denis Phipps. Chuck Caufield scores.
  • Juan Sanchez doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder David Cook. Dayton Buller out at home on the throw, left fielder David Cook to third baseman Mike Costanzo to catcher Kevin Coddington. Juan Sanchez to 3rd on the throw.
  • Wily Peralta reaches on fielding error by shortstop Jake Kahaulelio.
  • Lee Haydel called out on strikes.

Manatee Box Score:

BASERUNNING

SB: Zarraga, S (2, 2nd base off Black/Higashioka), Kjeldgaard (1, 2nd base off Claiborne/Higashioka).

CS: Prince (1, 2nd base by Black/Higashioka).

It's like a bizarro version of SB/CS. Love the oddities nearly each box score brings. Eric (Sessile), awesome job on the box score breakdowns as always, thanks.
