Who do Parra and Hawkins replace?

endaround
While the discussion has focused on whether Lucroy coming back causes Nieves or Kottaras to be released or if they punt that decision until Hart returns by letting Reed go, more interesting to me is the bullpen decision. Assuming that there isn't an injury going forward and Saito is good to go I think it comes down to 2 of Green, Braddock and Stetter. Green is just a guy but he is out of options. Braddock has the most talent but his lack of velocity so far is slightly concerning and has 3 options remaining. Stetter is a LOOGY and so is more a luxury and has an option remaining but its nice to have 2 LHers in the pen. If I were to guess now I'd say Parra replaces Braddock and Hawkins will cause Green to be released. If that happens the 40 man may soon be down to 37 players.

I'd probably send Braddock down to try and get his velocity up, and just keep him there for a couple weeks until the next injury. I'd probably just release Green as well, I just don't think he's terribly valuable to this organization.

This is a really solid looking bullpen when everybody is healthy, so hopefully guys can stay off the DL.

I think Stetter will get optioned. Braddock has already been used as a 7th inning guy, so I think they value him more. Estrada will probably go when Hawkins comes back, and then Green will go when Greinke gets back. I think Hawkins will come back between the April 16 and April 26 starts, so Estrada will go if Greinke is gonna be ready for that April 26 start. Otherwise, Green will just go and Estrada will go later. Green is really just a guy who can only retire righties, so he's not that useful to us at this point.

Parra can only really replace one of the lefties or maybe Mitre as the long man, he doesn't make any sense to be replacing the other righties. So I'd think either Braddock or Stetter goes down. Hawkins kind of scares me because I'm not sure he is going to be better than the player he ends up replacing. Also keep in mind we are carrying an extra RP right now I believe? So another bullpen arm will be lost at some point as well.

Green got a lot of work this weekend, including in key situations, maybe the coaches will keep him. I'd wouldn't be surprised to see Braddock go down, get light use and be a key piece come August and September. I can't see Stetter staying up when Hawkins comes back. I actually think Hawkins will be very good for us this year and our pen will be one of the better pens in the league.

Stetter when Parra comes back, Estrada when Greinke comes back and Green when Hawkins comes back. That would be my guess anyway. Stetter will have to pass through waivers to go down I believe.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Barring someone being hurt enough to put on the DL, that's the likely scenario. Stetter and Estrada each have an option left so they're no brainers. Green should pass through but even if he doesn't they have equal talent available in McClendon, DiFelice, James and Kintzler so his loss to the organization would not be a big deal.

Braddock is a stud. I think he stays. I think we can likely count on Estrada and Green being sent out when Parra and Hawkins return. Mitre and Parra can fill the gap for Greinke until he returns. Estrada is just a guy and is no great shakes IMHO.

Starters:
SP Gallardo
SP Marcum
SP Narveson
SP Wolf

Bullpen breakdown:
LRP: Parra
LRP: Mitre
MRP: Braddock
MRP: Loe
MRP: Stetter
SU: Hawkins
SU: Saito
CL: Axford

Mitre or Stetter goes when Greinke returns. I like what both bring but it will all depend on performance until May when Greinke returns.

I would use this as an excuse to sit Saito for another week or two, make sure he's "right." DL him, send down Stetter. Then you wait and see if any other injuries occur. You can also take your time with Parra. That's how I would handle it, kick these decisions down the road a bit and these things usually work themselves out. Green seems obvious to go at some point, but he has been pitching well. Maybe buy him a little more time?

I think with Saito on the DL and Kintzler recalled, Kintzler would be the first to head back once Parra or Hawkins are ready to come back - basically Saito's DL stint is allowing the Brewers to push back their tough decisions a bit later, possibly long enough for some other team looking for bullpen help to work out some sort of trade with Milwaukee, where the Brewers could get a decent bench bat in return.

Not saying the Brewers' pen is full of great pitchers, but they do seem to have a good # of warm bodies with far amounts of MLB experience - for now they'll need to keep all of them until everyone's healthy and available(if that ever happens)

Sorry Mitre, we don't need you with all the righties and Parra to eat innings

Stetter, we could have used another lefty but you just aren't good enough all around

I have more faith in Hawkins than most here I think. I expect him to come in with good velocity and tail to work a lot of scoreless 8ths.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

  • 2 weeks later...

i found it telling that last night both braddock (2.0 innings)and kintzler (2.2 innings) were used for as long as they were. it almost seemed as if the brewers had expected that both saito and hart would be activated on wednesday and that both braddock and kintzler would be optioned to nashville, returning to a 12-man pitching staff.

if braddock isn't on the bubble right now, he certainly was used yesterday as if he was. if braddock is still on the roster when parra comes back, it's bye-bye braddock until he gets his velocity back up..

Why is Braddock on the bubble just because he was used to pitch 2 innings? That only tells me that he's seen as an arm that can be used for multiple innings, and not just against lefties. I don't think it affects his roster status. We didn't have many guys out there who could throw multiple inning in that situation. I think his spot is pretty solid. If Stetter could get us two innings, then he would've been used in your scenario. But he can't.
