Trade Gomez for SS upgrade

Doesn't think make a lot of sense right now? Free up Morgan to start every day, and get us an upgrade at SS. Specifically, say something like:

Gomez + Rogers + Betancourt + cash (to cover Betancourt's salary)

to TORONTO

for Yunel Escobar + mid-level prospect

Gomez gets a shot in Toronto, the Blue Jays are looking to get younger, and while Escobar had a down year last season, he's been great for his career. The Blue Jays get Betancourt back and we eat his salary, which gives them a cheap stop gap until Hechavarria makes it up to the big leagues.

This gives us an eventual lineup of: 1) Morgan 2) Hart 3) Braun 4) Fielder 5) Weeks 6) McGehee 7) Escobar 8) Lucroy 9) Pitcher

Elite lineup to go along with good pitching staff, and our defense gets better in the process.

I don't want to trade Rogers. I'm hoping in the off season we can save some money buy trading Wolf and replacing him with Rogers. I'd rather just hang on to Bentancourt since he is only on a one year contract then upgrade via free agency then to trade away yet another prospect.

Gomez was among the worst offensive players in MLB last year. He has negative value as a starter. But he has value in certain situations...pinch runner, defensive replacement, etc. There's always a chance he could improve. He's shown some willingness to bunt this year (although most have not been good), he has been tagging linedrives (mostly into the 10th row behind the visitors dugout), and he's actually taken some close pitches. Heck, last night Gametracker showed two of his 9th innings strikes should have clearly been called balls. The tools are there, but as of now he's not living up to them and has negative value.

Gomez and Betancourt have negative value. Putting them both in a trade is going to get nothing but a laugh and a hangup.

Gomez does not and we'd be paying for Betancourt in this scenario, so if they didn't want him, they don't have to take him.

Problem solved.

The only way I could see any team trading a halfway decent shortstop (ie. better than Betancourt) for Gomez is if they have someone with "attitude issues" (like a Nyjer Morgan situation). I don't see any team that is a fit right now, but maybe as the season wears along, who knows?

I still say Gomez can be a valuable bench player with a manager willing to pinch-run. Having a guy who can steal 2nd and 3rd in late innings and potentially stay in to play all-league defense at a premium position is useful. Trading him while his value is lowest isn't a good idea. If the semi-platoon between Gomez and Morgan works they can keep that situation in CF for as long as 3 years. That probably isn't likely to happen with guys like Schafer, Komatsu, and maybe even Gindl knocking on the door at that position in the coming seasons, but I think it's a rather exciting thought.

No, he really hasn't. He completely botched a double play today when he tried to take it himself, and he didn't cover second on a short fly to CF when Gomez could've thrown the guy out.

He has a .530 OPS.

Nothing he's done has been fine so far.

I am not a Betancourt defender, but there is no way he turns a double play by throwing a ball to Rickie. If I remember Rickie was running past the base. Betancourt had no other option.

If it is the play I remember, Betancourt was closer to 2B than Weeks. Betancourt for the most part has matched the expected level of suckitude.

They had some sort of shift going where Weeks was playing on the 3b side of second. Weeks was way out of position for the turn. Initially I thought the same thing but after seeing the replay it was clear that was his only option.

I don't know what you guys are watching but Betancourt has been solid defensively. He's made all the routine plays, has turned 7 DP and looked every bit like a major league shortstop. There was one ball hit to his left in the Brave series that perhaps Escobar and a few others get to but other than that his below average range hasn't really cost the team.

As for his offense, lets wait. 35 PA are hardly a valid sample. He's only fanned 3 times, so he's making contact. Escobar currently has a .488 OPS. Hardy is hurt (again) and on the DL.

I agree that 35 PA aren't a valid sample, but the 3000 preceding are a pretty good one, and they demonstrate that the guy can't hit. He struggles to get on base at even a .300 clip. There really isn't a place for a guy like that, in my opinion.

Gomez is still more valuable to the Brewers than what he could bring back in a trade. People can continue to rip our GM for trading Hardy for him but the truth is the Brewers have gotten the better end of the deal thus far.

No, we haven't. Hardy has been much more valuable than Gomez. We didn't need Hardy last year but this year he would be really helpful.

Hardy would be adding negative value to the team right now. If Hardy was on the Brewers right now Counsell would be the everyday SS. Hardy right now is a platoon player because he can not stay healthy.

I know taking it himself was the only option. The problem was, any SS worth his salt who runs more than 3 steps is throwing the ball as his foot hits the bag then jumping to clear the runner. Not running to the bag, jumping and trying a mid-air throw which almost ended up bouncing into the dugout.
