Still possible to trade Prince at the deadline?

Just a question here: Is it still possible that Prince gets traded at the deadline? Hypothetically speaking...what if Mat Gamel is tearing the cover off of the ball in AAA and during interleague play and is getting comfy at 1st. Do you think that the team would start to listen to trade offers again?

If they do, I have an idea. I know that the Braves are at the front of my mind because they were just in town for 4 days. I also acknowledge the fact that a 4 game series does not make/break a player. That said, what if Freddie Freeman doesn't pan out for them? Hinske doesn't seem like playoff contender starter material either. Lastly, Chipper Jones is made of glass so my thought is that he will be hurt by the All Star game as well. Do you think that the Braves and Brewers match up?

Milwaukee trades: Fielder, McGehee and a CF prospect

Atlanta trades: Prado, Beechy and Kimbrel

Thoughts?

I don't like that offer. I think it's way too much to give up and you are taking a huge chunk of your offense away. If Freddie Freeman was included I could get more excited about it, but I highly doubt Atlanta would give him up for half a season of Fielder. I agree with RockCo...the only way we trade Fielder at the deadline is if we are way, way out of contention. I just don't see it happening. Plus, we need to try to keep Greinke happy to increase the odds he'll re-sign with us.

  • 2 weeks later...

I like Prince and would like him to remain in Milwaukee.

That said...
1. I would make one more run at signing him before July.
2. If it is apparent that he is gone....I start shopping him for a young SS (prospect or Major Leaguer) and LH 1baseman or LH Outfielder.
3. My reasoning for the possibility of a LH OF is the possibility of Braun playing 1B. He is an obvious butcher in LF, and has played some ss and 3b in the minors and college. So the fielding at 1b shouldn't be too difficult.
4. Keep Prince Out of the Cubs mitts
5. If no options avail themselves....suck it up...unfortunately ... and let him walk.

I don't care if the Brewers are in the hunt or whatever...trading a player of the caliber of Prince is more valuable than the pick....in most cases.

I'd only trade him if blown away by an offer (ie. 2-3 top prospects, at least one of which would be ready to help the MLB club this season, assuming still in the playoff hunt). I could see trading him if out of contention, but I don't see it happening.

Fielder's trade value peaked in 2008, I doubt the return for his services would be worth it. Melvin never seems to find a bidding war for a player that he's trading. I'm not opposed to the idea, I just don't find it to be likely, especially since we traded away 5 legit prospects this winter in an effort to win.

As long as we're still in it, we'd pretty much need to get top-notch prospects and a "free" salary-dumped SS upgrade for it to make sense, IMO. The probability that someone wants to rent Prince in order to make a playoff run, but could afford to give up something that will help the Brewers this year is somewhat low. You'd assume Gamel or Braun could man first while the dropoff from Fielder could be partially-offset by an SS acquisition, but a lot of things need to work out just right for a trade to make sense, and I just don't see it as very likely.

There was a insider on espn last week on how the Brewers may trade Prince even if they are in the race.

If the right deal comes along, why wouldn't they? If some team(I'm looking at you Baltimore) is dumb enough to offer 2-3 top level prospects and a quality ML player, I'd expect doug to pull the trigger.

Now, do i think it will happen? No, not at all. But the possibility remains.
