2011-04-02 Brewers (Marcum) at Reds (Wood) - 6:10 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 4-2]

I'm very intrigued by this whole Kottaras-Nieves thing. Alot of folks here on Brewerfan.net insist that Kottaras will remain the backup catcher when Lucroy returns, but if that is the case, why isn't Kottaras getting a start in these first 2 games? (Kottaras will start tommorow, apparently).... Nieves is an impressive defensive catcher but historically Kottaras is a vastly better hitter than Nieves.... I suppose I could see sitting Kottaras versus a lefty... I'm concerned that Kottaras will be let go when Lucroy returns, which I think would be a real mistake
Nieves was Gallardo's personal catcher in ST, and tonight we face a lefty. That's the only reason Nieves has started both games. And really Kottaras isn't that good anyway. Sure he had a good ST, but that means nothing. We thought he was gonna be a good hitter last year, and he barely hit .200.

Guys, the only reason Almonte is starting is because it's a lefty pitcher. None of the other guys should be starting against lefties anyway. This doesn't mean that Almonte is ahead of Morgan and Reed on the bench.

I realize Almonte's starting because of the lefty, and I really don't have much of a problem with it until Hart is back. I was just noting the interesting roster decision where the Brewers apparently have 6 outfielders and only 1 back-up infielder. Plus, it seems a little embarrassing that the Brewers are trotting out a DH and a 33 yr.old AAAA guy to play RF until Hart returns. At least Morgan and Reed can play defense.

I agree that Kotsay shouldn't start over Morgan, but I don't have a problem with Almonte against the lefty. None of those guys have good splits against lefties.

Kottaras had a .701 OPS last year. In contrast, Nieves had a .554 OPS last year!!! They are at vastly different levels as hitters. Nieves has a career OPS in MLB of .574 ... that is brutal

Not saying Nieves isn't a bad hitter. Just saying that Kottaras isn't exactly great either. No matter who we keep, they aren't gonna play much anyway. It just seems to me that Roenicke likes Nieves more because of his defense. I don't see why we would've even signed him if we liked Kottaras.

So do you think Nieves will still be a Brewer when Lucroy gets back

A .701 OPS when you bat .201 is very impressive. Kottaras had a higher OPS than Yadier Molina, Jose Molina, A.J. Pierzinski, and a bunch of other catchers last season

that line up is really ugly
It's at least a little better than the Opening Day lineup that had Kotsay instead of Almonte, but yeah, until Hart gets back there isn't much reason for the opposing team to worry about the bottom 4 spots of the lineup. Especially if Roenicke insists on making Yo bunt with a runner on second and nobody out.

Yeah I do at this point. Not saying I agree with it though. It just seems to me like they value defense more than offense for the backup catcher position. The backup is only gonna start 30 games or so anyway.
