Nyjer Morgan a Possibility?

Recommended Posts

Would he take over the everyday CF job? If so, would he be our lead off guy and Rickie would slide down to #5? Or are we looking at him at #8...

Would Gomez keep his job?

Yeah, they aren't gonna give away Gomez's job to a guy that couldn't beat out Ankiel, Stairs, and Nix to make the Nats roster.

Ok I need someone to explain why the Brewers would want anything to do with Nyjer Morgan?

-He turns 31 in July

-He had a negative WAR in 2010

-He has lead the league twice in caught stealing

-He seems to have some sort of anger management issue

There seems to be little/no chance of him getting near the numbers at the apex of his career.

I'm digging ... but his speed off the bench would be a nice asset late in games.

PEM ... unless you are expecting Gomez to figure out how to use a baseball bat this year.. Morgan's career .283/.344 wouldn't be a bad thing at the bottom of our lineup.. because right now Gomez, Lucroy, Yuni, Pitcher is a black hole.

Well, with Gomez tearing the cover off the ball in ST, he's gonna start the year hitting 2nd. And yes, I do expect him to hit this year. If he doesn't, then yes, Morgan would be a good alternative. My comment was in regard to just giving him the job over Gomez, which would be dumb, and won't happen.

I think I like the idea of getting Morgan as he fits into the speed model that Roenicke is trying to build. Morgan obviously has tons of speed, albeit he doesn't have the best stolen base %, but some of those extra intangibles he brings (outside of fighting with the water cooler) like the ability to take the extra base and get on base at a decent clip (.344 for his career) is something to take into account here. His 2010 campaign was his worst playing for the Nationals, and yes he was a -1.1 WAR player. However, over his career he is a 4.4 WAR total. His best season was just in 2009 in which he had a .757 OPS that year and a 2 WAR.

Perhaps a change of scenery for him to a team with a legitimate chance to win might be good for him as it gets him away from his Pirates/Nationals days. I think as a 4th outfielder, he would be great insurance for Gomez in case he flops again. Also he would be the first choice as a late inning defensive replacement for Hart or Braun by a mile. Think of that speed in the outfield! Also, I think Kotsay plays a lot less if Morgan is added.

I think his bad attitude has more to do with only playing for bad baseball teams his entire career. I would hope the chance of playing in the playoffs would help his anger issues. I'd assume he would replace Reed who turns 30 this summer so its not a huge issue.

Still seems like a rumor that Rosethal put together knowing the brewers traded an OF, Hart was hurt, and that the Nats are trying to unload him.

Haudricourt tweeted now that Rosenthal is saying that Brewers are going to pass on Morgan now and go with Boggs and Reed.
Rosenthal says it's not going to happen? Welcome to Milwaukee, Nyjer!

May I point out that Gomez has a 1.094 OPS this spring compared to the .690 that he posted last year in ST. While it's generally best to ignore spring stats, it's possible this could signal that he's made strides as a hitter and if so, what's the need for Morgan?

I don't suspect both Boggs and Reed will be around once Hart is healthy. For anyone wondering why they picked up Carroll the other day, now we know.

Spring training stats are garbage. If they meant anything it would mean Adam Stern was a better option to start than Ryan Braun last year.
