Sergio Mitre -- Our forum poster Briggs with a nice call

Yankees are considering releasing Sergio Mitre.

Mitre had pitched 5 innings this spring without allowing a run. Now he's no great shakes but for goodness sakes the Brewers are looking at Peralta (8 games above A ball), Marco Estrada, and Eugenio De la Cruz to fill in as a starter.

He really doesn't have great career numbers (career ERA above 5.00), but I suppose for the low cost he could be worth a look at least.
Seems to me the choice is go with completely untested guy like Peralta, career minor leaguer like De la Cruz or Estrada, or take a chance on a veteran cut loose elsewhere to fill Greinke's spot. How many guys that will be cut loose put up a 3.33 ERA, and 1.093 WHIP last year in over 50 innings? Not only that, most veterans cut loose will happen at the end of spring. They'd have the bonus of having Mitre for a full 2 weeks. Mitre's good enough to stick around as a long man too.

I haven't seen de la Cruz mentioned at all, though he does have velocity, if he ever appears on the scene, ikt'll probably be in the 'pen, as he's short.

I do like Estrada, if he's healthy, and McClendon is my sleeper. Right now, it looks like we might well be talking about a single start, with them using Rogers/Rivas/Peralta (whoever is pitching the best) for the two later in April.

Maybe a team will make this easy by releasing a hard throwing swingman with an option left in the next couple weeks.

He's a very interesting case. >50% GB rates, but absolutely atrocious HR rates. His xFIP is in the low 4s pretty much every season, but his FIP and ERA are almost guaranteed to be nearly a point higher.

I'd consider him to fill in if necessary, but it sure seems like he's got Dave Bush-itis.
