What has happend here?

Why has Brewerfan..net been so slow, I was a long time lurker until i joined last year, there are many days now that there are not even 100 post a day. that never happened even a slow day in the winter and i seen less than 15 members on during the day, the curios to see what everyone thinks.

I haven't personally noticed page loading slowness other than "normal" Yuku slowness, but I've certainly noticed posting slowness. However, members of other Yuku communities are reporting overall slowness, meaning that I'm not surprised to hear that people are experiencing it here at Brewerfan, too. Additionally, some communities are experiencing really bad system caching (posts disappearing and reappearing later) on a daily basis.

The purported reason is that Yuku is changing to a new colocation center. The initial estimate for the move's completion was mid-January. It's obviously taking longer than expected.

I honestly don't think that Yuku has either the manpower or financial wherewithal to deliver the necessary goods in a proper fashion, even with the recent purchase by Inform. As many of you know, most of the customer service staff was let go last fall. There've also been two hefty price increases, one in December and another one this week.

I should also mention that there've been reports of people having login issues. If you're unable to log in, please send me an e-mail (available on the About Us page) or submit a help ticket directly to Yuku staff. The help desk would be accessible as it doesn't use the same login as the rest of the system.

I'm glad to hear that the system is running OK for you. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I've noticed that the Transactions forum is much less active than usual. Maybe that's a consequence of all the player acquisitions this off-season.

Both things probably have something to do with at least 23 spots being filled on the 25 man roster and only 1-2 positions being obviously weak. Add in that our whipping boy reporter is gone and both positions along with our weakened minor league system have been talked about ad nauseam months ago and there really isn't much to discuss. It also seems many of the more stat minded posters have not been posting as much.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Yeah, I agree with logan that there just hasn't been much to talk about lately. You had the Greinke injury get a lot of discussion earlier this week, but not much beyond that. I think a lot of people are just kind of ready and waiting for the regular season to start.

Here's an idea though, assuming more participation is wanted: Would it be possible to include some sort of Facebook/Twitter integration with the board? I know a lot of posters here are on Twitter now, myself included. It might be neat to link to posts directly through our social media accounts. I don't know if this is even possible with Yuku, but just an idea.

Yuku doesn't offer anything for Twitter, but there's a Facebook item in the Share This menu that's on the board directory, forum, and topic pages. Not being on Facebook, I've never tried it. If someone wants to report back on how it works, it'd be appreciated.

To supplement the Facebook thing in Share This, Yuku tried offering a Facebook Like feature. However, it was poorly implemented. It slowed page loading to an unacceptable level, and it was placed poorly on the page (covering up items in the navigation bar). We shut it off as soon as a control was offered to do so, and last fall, due to slowness issues, Yuku pulled the feature entirely.

casey, I had no idea about the "Share This" option, since it's sort of hidden underneath each thread. I just tried it with a thread from the MLB topic forum, and it did post to my Facebook page. Seems like it worked just fine. So that is kind of cool.

It's only on the bottom of topic and forum pages, but it's at both the top and bottom of directory page.

I put an image on the Share This menus here and on LambeauLeap. That should make the menu's purpose more apparent.

I would assume all message boards and many blogs have slowed down with Twitter's emergence. People find it easier to post throwaway crap than to think out a post or reply. I can't say I've noticed a slowdown, but Twitter is so darn fast, I check that out all the time. BF.net is more of a couple times a day thing.

Al's right. Message boards aren't necessarily the monolith of content that they used to be. Brewerfan.net needs to adapt to the times, and that's something we're heavily into the process of doing. The Fan Forum will always be an integral part of the site, but we're working on other ways to deliver content and other types of content.

Our 10 year anniversary is coming up, and we're taking this occasion to re-evaluate what we do and how we do it.

I'm trying to make a more concerted effort to be around here more often. Since I'm currently not working, it should be doable. What the hell else am I going to do aside from watching baseball and talking about it? It's too cold to fish.

There's still ice out there! At least in Oshkosh there is. Limited out on walleyes (Winnebago) yesterday. Can't wait for the run.

Very nice. I went open water on the river by Point a couple weeks ago and didn't catch a single walleye. I ice fished probably a dozen times or so, but it's really not for me. I might try it one last time this coming week.

Russ occasionally posts still. Once a week so I think he is still lurking.

O, I still read everyday. There was a point that bf.net kind of got anti-stat last year, so I got sick of spending 20 minutes on a post to have it refuted in a 20 second throw-away response. This year has been a lot better but I wish there were more posts as well.

Of course, we all can be part of the solution by starting threads. I think I've started one thread this season.

My main issue is that some of the posters (I refuse to name them here) are rather cruel and combative. I really hate reading their constant degrading, snobbish remarks. Some of them need lessons in utilizing a tone that sounds more polite. I hate reading a logical idea/suggestion and then finding those folks blasting people as foolishly wrong.

to add a little bit to what DHonks said, the combative/i-know-more nature of some discussions i think prevents a lot of people from posting their own opinions and keeps potential posters in that 'lurking' stage. it's a bit scary to jump into conversation in the Major League section.

i used to visit an Appalachian Trail discussion website until it became too much that four or five people started insulting each other in a battle over who is the alpha male and dominant expert. it's odd the contrast between the Major League Forum and the friendly, helpful Off-Topic Forum.

we don't do the Three Strikes policy anymore and have moved away from more heavy-handed moderation, maybe because it probably took up so much time for the Moderators. however, I for one would welcome some return of that to maintain some civility.

I am sort of surprised to read DHonks comments. I think things have gotten better in the past year or so. Maybe I've just thickened my skin up or something. A few people that seemed to be more problematic don't seem to be posting any more, so maybe that has helped.

I suppose I should add that I hope I'm not one of the posters he was referring to.

Invader3k, we've all snapped at people on occasion, but my frustration is with the constant offenders. You are not among them. It just seems to me that a few of the dominant voices are not very constructive

And Game05, glad to know it's not just me feeling this way. I still read, lurk, and post one or twice a day, but I may also have simply moved on a bit.
