Luis Salazar injured by line-drive foul ball (Latest: loses eye)

Atlanta Journal-Constitution link

Luis Salazar, who was tabbed to manage the Braves' high-A affiliate this season, was hit in the face by a line drive foul off the bat of Brian McCann.

He was unconscious for 15 minutes, airlifted to a hospital, and (as of the time of the link above) had regained consciousness and was breathing on his own.

This brings back too many memories of Mike Coolbaugh. Fingers crossed for his recovery.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

This type of thing just makes me sick. 6 years ago my younger brother took a batted ball to the back of the head while he and his friends were practicing. Everything turned out all right besides him being unconscious for a while and having a concussion, but head injuries are scary things. I hate to think of what could have happened.

Realistically though, I don't really know what can be done about it in MLB besides the measures they have already taken.

endaround, I just read about an Easton prototype of pitchers wearing a "helmet cover" over their cap. Should base coaches wear a protective visor ala hockey helmets? I know that may seem extreme, but no one should lose an eye or face death on a freak occurance. I wish Salazar a speedy recovery.

maybe base coaches should stand behind the same barrier that batting practice pitchers do. players would still be able to see them and they can easily move around once the ball is in play.

losing the eye is obviously rough, but glad it sounds like there won't be any permanent brain damage.

The 54-year-old Salazar was standing against the railing on the top step of the dugout during a game between the Braves and St. Louis Cardinals when Brian McCann fouled a ball in his direction. Salazar was unable to get out of the way and fell head-first back into the dugout.
