projected openings on the 40-man roster by 31 march

Egan was a Rule 5 pick. If he's not on the 25-man roster all season, the Brewers have to offer him back to Baltimore.
correct. but he has to clear waivers first. but all of the other teams would face the same situation: they have to have a spot on their 40-man roster and their 25-man roster. as soon as the player is removed from the 25-man roster during his season as a rule 5 draftee, he has to be placed on waivers. any team can claim him. if no team claims him, he has to be offered back to the club from which he was drafted (in this case, baltimore).

I'm still confused as to how this is "in the interests of keeping Pat Egan in the organization". I get that other teams probably wouldn't put in a claim on him, but do you mean that you think Baltimore might just refuse taking Egan back?

the brewers and the orioles are in the unique position of having selected a player from the other's minor league ranks in this past rule 5 draft. if both players clear waivers, it's quite possible that the brewers and the orioles just agree to trade the two players.

bottom line: this removes pat egan from the 40-man roster--which is what this thread is about. i'm just predicting that in order to ensure that other teams don't claim him, the brewers will wait until after the season starts to pass him through waivers (and effectively open up a spot on their 40-man roster) . . . and benefit from having him as an available bullpen arm for at least a few games until others return from injuries.

the brewers gave up on pat egan (and the orioles gave up on adrian rosario). one roster spot has opened up, putting the current roster at 39.
No, the roster is actually still at 40. Rosario cleared Rule 5 waivers on the way back, but would have to be exposed to traditional waivers if removed from the 40-man. In that case, a claiming team could grab him and not have to keep him on their own 25-man roster.

Yeah I'd assuem teh Brewers will keep Rosario on the 40 man at this point since they should have 2 openings soon anyway (Nieves and Boggs/Cruz)

Nieves will surrender his spot when Lucroy is activated. I figure they'll set it up for Lucroy to return the day Estrada makes a start. That way Estrada will take Nieves' spot on the 40 man. If Boggs is removed, he'll likely be replaced by Reed. If Cruz is removed, he'll be replaced by Almonte. I figure the return of Hart will result in Dickerson being optioned.

no worries . . . all of the accounts of the transaction that i saw stated that rosario was assigned to brevard county . . . and not optioned to brevard county. the latter happens to players on the 40-man roster, the former does not.

in being told that he won't make the 25-man roster, brandon boggs will have to be outrighted (if not claimed, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment). that likely opens up a spot for jeremy reed.

as far as position players go, it appears to be down to erick almonte and luis cruz. the subtraction of cruz opens up a spot for almonte. the addition of cruz keeps almonte off the 40-man roster.

it seems more and more likely that the brewers are banking on the return on jonathan lucroy by april 6th, which is when the brewers would need that 5th starter. if lucroy returns, either wil nieves or george kottaras would be removed from the 40-man roster, allowing the brewers to purchase the contract of a minor leaguer such as marco estrada.

if lucroy isn't quite ready by april 6th, i could see the brewers cutting one of the two catchers and recalling martin maldonado for a brief stint.
