Apple IPhone (Is this the best phone ever?)

Trombone482

I wasn't on the iphone bandwagon till now. Now granted I am not going to run out there and pay $600 for it. It still looks unbelievable. If it ever comes down in price and becomes unlocked for any carrier, then maybe. If you haven't seen all the cool features go to the NEW 20 minute demo www.apple.com/iphone/usin...dtour.html

its a cool video to watch. That being said anyone here gonna get when ot comes out or eventually maybe when it comes down in price like me?

I remember watching the Macworld keynote when it was first announced and I was pretty much speechless.

Unfortunately, I don't have money to throw around and I have no reason to get a cell phone. But that doesn't change the fact that I want one very, very badly.

I'm pretty averse to brand new technology, at least until the bugs are worked out.

I saw a report on CNN Headline News a couple of days ago about the phone, and how the internet content is likely to be very slow at the beginning.

Apple ads are usually amazing. And eventually, their products catch up to the hype.

I'm going to pass on the phone until I'm convinced that it will actually make my life better.

come on dude get in the 21 century. No cell phone? Thats all I have

Technically, I don't have one either. I have a prepay that I've made less than 5 calls on in the past year. I keep it strictly for must-use situations, not for sending texts while at work or calling people while I'm at the supermarket.

For the most part, people use them when they shouldn't and it makes me hate cells even more.

Sorry, no more threadjack.

I think the lack of a keypad would bug me a lot. I don't know how many times I have dialed a number without looking at the keypad. If you can't feel the keys, I am not sure the same thing would be possible on this phone.

oh absolutely, I hate being in line with someone on a cell and they are holding up the line http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif that being said, I thing cell phones are almost getting to a point were they are neccesary for some people. I think this phone looks great, I don't have any problem with there being no physical keypad. There is still a digital keypad http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Obviously you can still dial. But, without a physical keypad, when you can't feel the keys, I don't know how you could dial without looking.

I don't do it a lot (I don't use my phone while driving), but there are times when it's nice to be able to feel the keys and dial a number.

I guess I am a bit old fashioned in wanting my cell phone to be a phone first.

I don't think the digital keypad is any different then some of the keypads on cell phones nowadays. I have a Motorola Razr right now and the keys really don't stand out. Althought can't really say that I use the keypad all that much as I mainly use the voice dialing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I own a cell-phone, but not a data plan.

I don't get why people pay so much money on a monthly basis for (relatively) slow transfer rates. About the one thing I can say that I really like about the iPhone is it supports Wi-Fi.

I'll stick to my 30GB video iPod (and lousy cell phone) as separate devices. That way, I don't have to worry about what watching the next video podcast will kill off my cell phone's battery.

I'm with BillScottCanRake on the tactile thing. But I'd be willing to trade that off in exchange for the huge screen.

Oh, I am not saying I am switching right away. In comparison to my 60GB ipod the 8gb is tiny much less the 4GB. Its still very cool. My biggest question wil be weather you can use the music as ringtones. That would be awesome!! Imagine some of the songs that you could use as ringers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I watched a few sneak previews on youtube. It appears that iTunes will start to sell ring tones once the newest iTunes an iPhone is released.

I just hope it's as functional and cool as it looks. The visual voice mail system seems worth it alone.

I have had the Tmobile MDA for over a year now. Its basically a bigger, slower iPhone that runs on Windows Mobile5. I can say without a doubt that the keypad thing is not an issue. I can dial numbers without looking or "feeling" buttons being pressed. Of course, how often do you actually dial numbers anymore into a phone.

The iPhone definatly looks cool, but there is suppose to be another phone that runs linux and will be completely customizable and unlocked for any carrier. I was thinking that will be my next phone, but I haven't really looked into it yet.

EH..... I am not big fan of linux, never saw what the big deal was. I'll wait a year, Apple will probably find a way to not only bring the price down, but find a way to get a 40-80 GB hard drive in it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I'd love to just carry one device.

doesn't the iPhone constitute a more-functional Blackberry?

at this point, even if the price were cut in half, I'm not sure I could squeeze enough value out of it to be worth it. And because I think there's only one service provider for the phone, I'm sure they're going to completely gouge us on the service fees.

oh, and I'm a PT video-store counter-geek. it's the most frustrating thing in the world to deal with the customer who can't get off their stupid phone for 30 seconds to let me check their movies out. If there's a long line behind him/her, I like to stand there and wait until they're done with their conversation, that way everyone in the line gets mad at them. when will people realize, now that everyone owns a cell phone, that it's no longer cool to be on it all the time?

Who actually dials numbers on a cell phone? I don't even know almost anyone's phone number anymore. I just use the contacts list. I have everyone's information in there and I have it backed up on a card for when my phone blows up.

I can't seriously take as an argument that the UI is bad because a user can't dial a number by touch. How often are you dialing numbers on your cell phone? I can't remember the last time I did. Now you don't have to click to your contacts, you can just touch the one you want in the list displayed.

This phone is boss. I'm going to wait about a year to get one. It's ahead of its time for sure.

There are people who don't have or use a cell phone still? This is amazing to me. I'm not sure how I ever survived without one. When meeting up with friends or whatever, what did we used to do? Call and plan ahead hours in advance? Can't do that. It's a dynamic world. I need to be connected to my friends and such. It's a great convenience. Plans constantly change. Meeting up with people is so much easier. If we want to meet at Summerfest you just text them when you'll be there (text messaging is the single best feature of a phone!) and they'll text you where they're at when they get there.

I probably use text messaging more than any other feature. You can send one message to everyone at once (So if I want to do something I can send 15 people the same message) and get replies. Sometimes (very often) you don't want a conversation, you just want bare bones details on what's happening. Or you're in a loud place....or a library or something. Text messaging is, to me, the single biggest use of my phone.

I agree, people often use them at bad times (like when interacting with others) and I still can't stand it when people drive inattentively because of them. But for the most part I've accepted them as a ubiquitous and necessary accessory for people in modern society.

Since my contact list doesn't include every number in the universe, and since we routinely call people who aren't in our contact list (i.e. potential new customers, third party vendors, etc), I dial all sorts of numbers of people that I could never call if I had to rely exclusively on a contact list. True, those that I dial most are already in my contact list, but in our business we always try to get new customers.

I can't seriously take as an argument that the UI is bad because a user can't dial a number by touch. How often are you dialing numbers on your cell phone? I can't remember the last time I did. That's cool... Everyone has different requirements for a phone. Mine are different than yours. I love knowing exactly where the keys on my phone are, and being able to call or text without having to look.

I also like the reliability offered by a phone that has a physical keypad. I've had two cellphone displays go bad on me in the past. I couldn't see my contacts, and I couldn't see who was calling me, or read text messages, but I was able to answer the phone and make out-going calls until I got a replacement. It was inconvenient to be sure, but at least I wasn't dead-in-the water.

You might not need or like those things, but I find them invaluable.

Most likely my next phone

While I haven't done much research, this seems like it could be better than the iPhone, cheaper, and somewhat unique. It will probably take some more knowledge and not work as well out of the box, but if your willing to do some work, it could perhaps exceed the usefulness of the iPhone. If nothing else, there is another option.

eh, all I can think of with this phone is more problems with people in cars. Now they'll be reading the internet while driving. Great.

I'll stick with my cell phone from 5 years ago. When folded, it's at least twice as thick as a razr, if not more so. I'll keep it mostly because I have a sweet ringtone of the horn on Rodney's car in "Caddyshack". I can't find it anymore online and I doubt on this old phone I could get it off of there and import it onto a new phone.

My only complaint is that I couldn't get this phone even if I wanted to. Cingular doesn't serve my chunk of the state.

Verizon's unavailability bugs me more, though. I'd sign one of their contracts in a heartbeat to be able to cheaply use the OnStar phone built into my car.

I can't blame Verizon for this, though. Cell phone carriers aren't allowed to enter any market they want. GM could have figured out that there's essentially no such thing as a national carrier.

Yes. I am one of probably five people under age 30 who does not own an ipod. Never have either. I don't listen to enough music "on the go" to justify buying an ipod. When I got a new phone, I got one with an mp3 player (Cingular's Sync) to replace my ancient mp3 player that only held about 20 or so songs. I figure since I needed a new phone, might as well get one that plays mp3s too. Killed two birds with one stone. It holds way more music than I could ever listen to at one time, which works just fine for running or lifting.

The iphone looks cool and all, but I could never justify spending that much money on it. If you need a phone that does all that stuff (and can afford), I'm sure it's awesome, but I'm not drooling over the thing and waiting in line outside Best Buy for five days for one.

If I didn't need a cell phone for business, I probably wouldn't have one. I admit, it's handy in case of an emergency (like your car gets stuck somewhere and you have to call for a tow, which has happened to me a couple times in the last six years), but beyond that, they annoy me a lot. I can't believe how many times I'm driving on the interstate and I see some moron with his/her phone glued to their ear, while they're obviously barely paying attention to their driving. Just so incredibly irritating and stupid. It's even worse when they're tailgating you.

I used to work retail, and it was just as bad when someone was trying to talk to you, while at the same time blabbing on their phone. I usually just walked away until they were done. Either give me your attention or don't talk to me.
