I noticed that a quite a few pitchers were pitching with different level teams other than where they may supposedly be assigned. Is there a specific reason for doing that?

I didn't find it that different from past years. There were occasions when the big league Brewers needed to have pitchers throw in AAA (or even AA) games, and thus that pushed others down a level for that day. We kind of indicate every year when the box scores start being released that folks should not read too much into the placements.

It would appear that the decision to release Chris Cody came down to the wire; he was the only one of the recently pink-slipped players to appear on Sunday.

Nashville rallied in the ninth to beat Tucson, 4-3. Brendan Katin’s RBI double in the ninth gave the Sounds a victory. The double added to an already successful day for Katin, who finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Wily Peralta started and went five innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Jim Henderson was solid in relief, providing two innings of scoreless pitching.

Nashville Sounds

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- In their lone spring meeting, the Nashville Sounds doubled up the Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A's), 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Papago Park Complex.

Brewers left-hander Chris Narveson started for the Sounds and limited the River Cats to two runs on a hit and a walk in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Robert Hinton followed with 0.2 scoreless innings before Josh Butler closed out the game by tossing the final three frames for the Sounds, allowing two runs on three hits.

Outfielder Brett Carroll had a big day for the Sounds offense. He doubled, homered, and accounted for three Sounds runs. First baseman Mat Gamel added a double and home run of his own for Nashville. Outfielder Caleb Gindl drove in two RBIs, and infielder Edwin Maysonet and catcher Martin Maldonado each added two-hit efforts.

The Sounds continue their spring slate on Thursday with a home meeting with the Louisville Bats (AAA-Reds) at Maryvale Baseball Park.

Haudricourt:

Infielder Luis Cruz, who declined an outright assignment to Class AAA Nashville and exercised his right to free agency to sign with Texas, ended up in the minors when the Rangers sent him down.

So, what was the point of making that switch?

"They might have told him he'll be the first guy up if something happens," said general manager Doug Melvin. "I don't like doing that. I can't promise anything to guys. Suppose somebody else is playing better?

"I told him it would be between him and (Edwin) Maysonet if we needed a shortstop, whoever was playing better."

If anything happens to shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, Melvin said Maysonet would be summoned from Nashville. He said if anything happened to second baseman Rickie Weeks, it would be Eric Farris getting called up.

Melvin indicated Mat Gamel would see most of the action at first base at Nashville in the early weeks, with Farris at second, Maysonet at short and Zelous Wheeler at third.

"We're going to try to get away from moving guys around," said Melvin.

Carolina edged Huntsville, 2-1. Dan Merklinger started and allowed two runs, one earned, in five innings. The Stars pen held the Mudcats scoreless over the last four innings. Pete Fatse had two hits, including a double, but this would be his last game before getting released. Mike Fiers looked good for all eight of his pitches as we digest his AA relief assignment. We have a Corey Frerichs sighting out of the bullpen, so he comes off the "missing" list.
