Sounds Double Up Bats In Spring Action, 6-3

Nashville Sounds

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Nashville Sounds continued their winning ways in spring training action on Friday afternoon, doubling up the Louisville Bats (AAA-Reds), 6-3, at Goodyear Development Complex.

The Sounds' offense scored five runs in the second frame thanks to back-to-back home runs by catcher Patrick Arlis and outfielder Caleb Gindl. Outfielder Chuckie Caufield enjoyed a three-hit game for Nashville.

Right-hander Josh Butler made the start for Nashville and allowed two runs on four hits over three innings of work, throwing 57 pitches. Roque Mercedes and Mike Fiers both offered two scoreless relief innings for the Sounds, sandwiched around a David Johnson appearance (2 IP, 1 R).

The Sounds (2-5) head back to Goodyear on Saturday, when they face the Columbus Clippers (AAA-Indians).

***

We'll likely get Friday box scores soon. Don't expect Thursday intrasquad boxes it would seem, as the Sounds blog hinted at earlier, they were pretty loosely played.

McCavy: Maldonado will be No. 1 catcher at Nashville

On a slightly related note for the curious, I contacted "coach" a month ago and asked him about Angel Salome, what, if anything, happened and what went on this offseason. A brief response --

Nothing new, he was taking a break from baseball but it now looks like he might get back in and take the bull by the horns we will see soon.

With the September call-up two years ago, he got a taste of the big league lifestyle. And just to walk away -- nothing new since that response from coach. But if you remember back to this April 2010 post, you can get a sense of just how similar Angel's situation is to Zack Greinke, or perhaps more scary in concept, how close Zack Greinke's situation is to Angel's.

We'd prefer this particular thread not become a Salome thread, but knew folks had been asking. We continue to wish him well.

Good luck to Salome, but the difference between having a true physical injury and a lack of intestinal fortitude are two completely different things. I say good luck to the catchers that have stuck with it and showed the willingness to see it through to the end. Thank goodness Salome never tried to make it in the U. S. Military !!!!!!

Chris has another edition of Raising Mehrizona up, including this note:
I had a chance to talk a bit with Lee Tunnell, the minor league pitching coordinator for the Brewers, before practice started on Saturday. He was not confirming anyone for Wisconsin just yet, but he did mention that there will only be one pitching tandem for the Rattlers to start the season. Also, the other starters that are probably heading to Wisconsin in the next week will all be stretched out to pitch at least six innings or 75 pitches.

This not only shows a complete lack of understanding of social anxiety disorder, but goes far enough to be really disrespectful. For someone who sounds like he either was in, or has some experience with, the military, I'd advise you to look at how "shellshock" & PTSD were initially treated & discussed. Mental illnesses suffer far too frequently from the 'he's not tough enough' treatment.

Have to agree with toolivebrew, it is serious stuff. It has nothing to do with mental toughness, it has to do with an imbalancement and disorder. Greinke for example is prob one of the most mentally tough guys on the field but yet he nearly left baseball and would have if he didnt find a medication that helps curb his disorder. It is pure ignorance on the topic to even make that statement. I hope he does find something works and gets him back to baseball. Best of luck to Angel.

It's not a matter of disrespect at all. I was merely pointing out that all the players have to overcome some sort of obsticals along the way during their travels towards the big team. I also like to give credit to the guys who do the work during and off season to overcome some of these issues, and still play while taking care of business. Thats all !!!!!!!!

Corey Frerichs did not fare much better in relief, allowing three runs of his own in less than an inning of relief. Offensively, Juan Sanchez continued his hot-hitting, slugging a home run and double in four at-bats.

Angel *was* playing & just "taking care of business" for several years. Eventually, he ran into a wall so to speak & couldn't keep going. Sure, every player has to overcome obstacles, but that doesn't mean rehabbing from an injury is anything comparable to social anxiety disorder.

LHP Sam Narron is starting the split squad game in Surprise Monday vs. the Royals.

That game will be televised on FSN with a shared effort with the Royals' broadcast crew.

Of course most of the Brewers' regulars will be in Maryvale.

Between both games, look for lots of minor leaguers -- heck, plenty of rookie ball kids will need to fill in at the higher levels in the minor league games.

White Sox 2, Brewers 1 (box)

Shea Vucinich, Sergio Miranda, Kentrail Davis, Khris Davis (Uecker must have had fun with those two), Scooter Gennett, Taylor Green, and Sean Halton all saw action. 1-for-10 combined, Scooter with the lone hit (and RBI).

Gord Ash indicated today that Jonathan Lucroy will work out for a couple of days at Brevard County next week before then moving on to Jacksonville, where he will participate in rehab games with the Stars during their opening series there (4/7 thru 4/11).

So it won't be a backdated DL stint for Lucroy, there won't be a 4/6 return date.

At least we can get first-hand accounts from the Stars' radio staff -- oh wait, road game, no Stars-based audio. Sorry, cheap shot. No, not really. There will be coverage by the Suns' media, at least mentions.
