We'll archive spring training links here to reports on various players who are expected to open 2011 in the minors, even if they are in big league camp.

 

McCalvy: Logan Schafer makes it to big league camp

 

Also from Adam: Non-roster catcher Shawn Riggans remains sick at home with pneumonia and the Brewers plan to borrow an extra catcher from Minor League camp to fill in. "That can be a long process," manager Ron Roenicke said. "It could be a while."

Hence, the signing of Jeremy Reed to play in Nashville I would assume.

if anyone is at a minor league spring training game, it would be nice if they could confirm if Shawn Zarraga is now a switch hitter. We've seen no mention of him as a switch hitter from scouting reports, but last year an "insider" on this site defended him by saying that he was now batting both ways.

I'm sure we'll have more from the first live action of spring, but I just wanted to point out this humorous note from NBC's Craig Calcaterra:

Also in the game: number 94. When he was announced no one in the press box could figure out who he was because his name wasn’t listed on the roster. Finally someone figured out it was Reggie Keen. With a number that high and a name that hard to find, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that he doesn’t make the 25-man out of camp.

Oh, and when Keen came up to bat in the eighth he was wielding a skinny orange bat that looked like a fungo. He cracked it on a foul ball and substituted it with a new one that looked far more normal. Then he walked.

A split squad on the first day of spring training games made for a huge list of minor league camp call-ups today. In this thread, we'll list the players who take part. They can't be on the 40-man roster on the non-roster invitee camp list.

 

Brewers 5, Cubs 3 (box)

 

Skipping to the end, LHP Brian Garman, last year's 17th round pick, got the save. Had a chance to listen to that on the drive home from work today. Nice treat for the 22-year-old who shined at Helena last fall.

 

RHP Eulogio "Frankie" De La Cruz tossed a scoreless inning and RHP Jim Henderson stranded two men for Amaury Rivas.

 

At the plate, you'll see in the box score OF's D'Vontrey Richardson (0-for-3) and Brandon Jones, 2B Scooter Gennett, Taylor Green (at first base), 3B Cutter Dykstra, OF Reggie Keen, as noted above, and catcher Tyler Roberts (no AB's).

 

Pat Hughes and new Cubs broadcaster Keith Moreland commented on how well Gennett handled an in-between hop late in the game.

Giants 10, Brewers 9 (box)

 

All the pitchers were from big league camp.

 

Erik Komatsu, in right field, doubled, singled, and drove in two; SS Carlos George tripled and drove in a run in two AB's, but committed an error; first baseman Sean Halton spelled Prince Fielder and singled in two trips; Sergio Miranda replaced Casey McGehee at third base, couldn't handle a sharp grounder for a costly error; LF Lee Haydel singled in two trips; Brendan Katin (who needs to be extended a full non-roster invite) homered, and along with Cody Hawn, all the way up from Helena, combined for four RBI in the DH spot, and T.J. Mittelstaedt was thrown out stealing to end the game.

Brewers 3, White Sox 1 (box)

 

RHP Donovan Hand kept Zach Greinke's line pretty, stranding Zach's baserunner by getting two outs in the 2nd.

 

Hunter Morris with a triple in his AB.

 

RHP Marco Estrada surrendered the Brewers' staff only run, but did get the save.

Hunter Morris with a pinch-hit single Wednesday, now 2-for-2 on the spring, and RHP's Eulogio De La Cruz, Michael Fiers, and Jim Henderson finished up -- Fiers with a 1-2-3 inning with a K, as the Power 50's # 29 (and admittedly, some of those in the Brewer blogosphere believe he should be higher) continues to garner attention.

 

Unless some old(er) arms are stashed in Huntsville, there are going to be some relief arms the organization will need to say goodbye to come the start of the minor league seasons. Just not enough spots...

 

FYI -- Power 50 shortly after the start of the new seasons.

On Thursday, Scooter Gennett kept the bottom of the 9th alive for Anderson De La Rosa's walk-off three-run home run. Scooter was the lone position player from minor league camp to participate.

 

RHP David Johnson teamed with Randy Wolf to post a very crooked number in the 2nd inning, striking out two while allowing two runs, one home run.

No kidding. It seems like the most obvious thing to ask coaches and player about. If he can play it, he could/should be the starter there this year!

Anyone at BF have the pull to get someone on the phone to ask?
