I wondered about that too. Did they only think of it recently, or did they only recently act on a ping they'd known about from the start? Neither makes a ton of sense.
My guess is that law enforcement uses this as a sort of last resort (?), perhaps to keep in the dark as much as possible that, since the Patriot Act, the government can find you anywhere, easily, as long as you have your cell phone.

Don't wanna get the thread locked, but this was my first thought when hearing/watching the news reports the last couple days. Perhaps they go on other evidence first, then use the cell phone when other means are exhausted?

FWIW, the WSJ's front page headline today reads: " 'IT'S PROBABLY HER' " (used caps, bc the paper did)

If that's the case, they should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, as the first few hours/days are crucial in terms of missing persons, and this was over two weeks later.

agreed, Peavey, but I can't think of a reason aside from that where they wouldn't use cell-phone technology right away. Confusing, to say the least.

Looks like we'll all just have to wait until the details they do choose to release are made public. This poor girl had some problems, it sounds like, but it's such a shame they weren't sufficiently addressed in time (mostly by her, I guess)

During the first press conference yesterday, Despain said that they had searched that area before; but not with the 100 person crew and dogs. For them to search a 3 square mile area with a fine tooth comb, they'd almost have to be certain something of value is there. So some other piece of evidence or a tip must have come out for them to go back to that area and search more thoroughly.

I did not know her, but I came to the realization that we likely had the same professors in the UW-Whitewater College of Arts and Communication. She majored in public relations, which was my minor and she was a couple years younger than me so as she was starting her degree process I was just ending mine.

UW-Whitewater has lost a handful of students the last few years to car accidents, natural deaths and now this.

Two female classmates of mine at Whitewater died on campus. One was a popular news anchor for the student TV station, who died outside the library and the other was a freshman when I was a freshman who died of cancer.

Sad day for the Nolan family and the UW-Whitewater community who lost a student and one of their own.

I find it creepy that I was at Brats the same time as her. I was out for my birthday and I ended up getting kicked out. I was also at Lava Lounge that night, although earlier than her.
