If Weeks doesn't sign a long-term extension....

Don't we have to try and get something for him. I mean, if and when Fielder walks, we won't be getting much of anything for him. Don't we have to try and get something for Weeks before the season starts? Or are we so all in this year that trading Weeks isn't even an option?

We would use two picks from Prince, two picks from Rickie and our own draft pick to reload our farm system.

Ugh...every time I think of that I think of this: Frederickson, Lintz, Dykstra, Adams: I know Odorizzi could be included too and we could have had higher selections if the Yankees didn't use their money to screw us, but the draft is such a crap shoot it seems. I know that we are going to lose Fielder for picks but my top choices for Weeks are 1) Extension 2) trade at the deadline if we aren't in it 3) lose for picks. Quite honestly if we are not going to make the playoffs I'd rather we be 15 games out at the deadline because I think we'd do better in restocking our system by trading Fielder and Weeks than taking picks for them. Too bad this year's draft class wasn't next years because I hear this year's may be the deepest in recent memory.

Not a bad fall-back plan. (Unless we use them on Cody Adams and Evan Frederickson)

Don't forget they'll have $20-22 million available next year that they are spending on Fielder and Weeks this year to reconstruct 3/4 of the infield. Best available SS would be Reyes. Nobody else is close unless Rollins becomes available too but he's no kid. The best 2B other than Weeks could be Kelly Johnson, who would be a real nice fit too because he hits from the left side. First base is a crap shoot beyond the big 3.

I have no problem with the Brewers playing it like the Rays did this year. I think Tampa is getting something like 10 picks in 1st and supplemental round. The Red Sox are getting 4 first round picks and they signed the two biggest offense free agents on the market!

The Brewers are all in for 2011. If they can't come to terms with an extension for Weeks, they'll try again after the season or let him walk for picks. They have no comparable lead-off option, and the middle of the infield would look pretty wretched. The only thing I could see changing that would be a deal for Michael Young, but unless injuries take a chunk out of Rickie's playing time, that would be a downgrade.

It would be disappointing to let him just walk but it is the correct move unless we are obviously out of contention come the trade deadline in which case Fielder and Weeks get moved for major league ready talent most likely.

Brewers, Weeks agree to extension

Honestly, I don't know why this topic was even brought up. I mean, I know it's all hypothetical but there was no way he wasn't going to sign long-term. Especially since they traded away arguably their best prospect and 2B replacement.
