Super Bowl Commercials

TabbertBB

Not a great year for the commercials. Lacking a lot this year.

I only found about 6 of value:

McDonalds with the bears and the report card.

Chevy Cruze and the Old Folks home and 42mpg

Pepsi Max and the warning before she throws the can

Coca Cola with line drawn in the sand

Bridgestone with the beaver saving the driver

Chevy Camaro with the Teacher

I wonder how many people saw the Terra Nova commercial, saw the one guy, and thought it was some sort of spin-off / sequel for Avatar?

Liked the Cap / Thor ads, but I'm a sucker for the Marvel movies.

The doritos 'dust' ad certainly caused a reaction from everyone watching....just not sure it was positive.

I appreciated the Groupon commercials riffing against your expectations.

NFL Network does 1 SB ad / year, and they're always creative. This year was no exception.

Darth Vader was probably the winner for the night; honorable mention to the Snickers / 90s comedians ad.

Every year people say the Half Time Show stinks and that the commercials weren't as good as most years. I think in reality both are casualties of ridiculously high expectations. After all, Halftime is really just some act trying to cram as much action as possible in about 18 minutes and commercials are just 30-60 seconds long.

That being said, I thought Half Time was bad, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, where have you gone?

The commercials on the other hand were completely up to par. Doritos and Pepsi Max were the big winners. That Audi Commercial with the guys escaping from the luxurious jail was very good. Coke commercial drawing the sand and the "Tiny Dancer" commercials were great too. All in all, a good night for commercials, but thankfully they were secondary to the great game. I think the commercials got boosted up during a series of terrible games from about 85-94 when the games were rarely if ever close or in question (with apologies to Super Bowls 23 and 25)

I didn't even comment on the halftime show....since I've come to the conclusion that it's bound to suck. I knew I hated the Black Eyed Peas, but I had only hoped that the disdain for the group would be half as widespread as the negative reviews for their performance this time around.

My proof that no one who likes the BEP actually listens to the BEP: I haven't heard one person note that they removed the reference to the C.I.A. as being akin to domestic terrorists when performing "Where is the Love?" during the game.

I at least give the NFL credit for trying to find a relevant, current band for the first time in a long time. Here's hoping for a Foo Fighters / Killers / Paramore / (your preferred band here) performance next year.

I liked the NFL Fan commercial where they used clips of old TV shows with NFL gear superimposed in the scene. Is there any cooler GB fan than the Fonz? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
Someone put a Packer hat and scarf on the Fonz statue that's on the riverwalk downtown.

Yeah, that was my favorite by far.

I didn't pay attention to the commercials too much this year, probably because I was so focused on the game at hand for obvious reasons. I do agree with the comment above that the Super Bowl commercials all seem to just perpetuate male/female stereotypes for the most part. It's not like you'll ever see a group of females acting like drunk doofuses and drooling over some hot guys in a TV commercial, though.

I forget what team it was, but you have to feel bad for the one represented by 90210...

I did see the commercial for Terra Nova and commented to my wife that it sounded interesting. I haven't seen Avatar, but it looked like a combination of Jurassic Park and Land before Time....

The Pepsi Max ad with the couple on their first date was horrendous. The Doritos crumbs/dust was hilarious.

I have a 6-year old daughter, so any movie ad that has people terrified is a real loser for us, anything overtly sexual is bad.

I had a discussion with a coworker a few weeks back about how awesome a Foo Fighters halftime show would be, with the opportunity for a quick cover of a Nirvana song or two now that Novoselic has joined the band. No other halftime show would get me that pumped. At some point they will, but probably not until Dave Grohl is pushing 60.

To each there own, I guess. To me, that was one of the better ads. I also like the the one of the guy sending flowers that tells the girl she has a nice rack and the Richard Lewis/Rosanne ads.

Did Novoselic join the band or is he just contributing as a guest on a song on the next album? It looks like original member Pat Smear is back as a full member, maybe that is what you meant??? It'd be awesome if Novoselic toured with them but I dont think they need two bass players.

Black Eyed Peas are a bad band who put on a good half time show. Their music may suck (depending on who you ask, I guess), but they're good at the spectacle, which makes a difference. As opposed to, say, The Who who were a great band who put on a lame half-time show.

Was anybody else totally horrified by the baby-hitting-the-screen ad? What were they thinking?

Not a fan of the baby hitting the window commercial or really any of the commercials.

As for the Black Eyed Peas that was easily the worst half time show I've ever seen. I don't hate their music so much as they are just terrible performers. Their auto-tuners were out of tune, the sound was terrible, the chick was making a fool of herself, and the Tron theme was embarrassing. Slash only managed to save a very little bit of it. I can't be the only one who was disappointed to see a musical performance without a single musical instrumental (Slash not withstanding) used.

I really don't know where else they can go for a half time show. The old timers do an ok job but can't do it like they used to. The new acts are all show and no substance. I can't really think of someone that would have wide ranging appeal that hasn't done it. The only two that come to mind are U2 and Paul McCartney but they've both done it in the last 10 years. Motorhead, Coldplay, Zeppelin reunion (when pigs fly)?

I thought the Eminem Chrysler commercial was the best of the year.

My wife suggested that Lady Gaga should do the halftime show. I think she would be a great choice because she is a skilled performer and will come with added press/entertainment value. As a general rule, the halftime show should feature an act that has a broad appeal, especially to the people who do not usually watch football games.

Gaga is exactly the type of performer that the NFL would shy away from....with good reason. She is as much performance art as musical performance. I think it was during the VMAs (Mtv's music awards) last year that she ended her performance suspended by wires, bleeding fake blood from the chest.

It's the unpredictability of artistic freedom that's the problem. The appeal is there, but there's more than enough danger to off-set that appeal.

My vote would be Oakenfold or Tiesto remixing current hits. Don't have to worry about auto-tuners or flubbing the lines. Dance/house is (finally) mainstream here in America. Won't happen, but it would be better. Between the Peas and Aguilera, those two performances pretty much summarized why I don't go to major concerts.

And I second the Chrysler 200 commercial as best. May not be the best product, but was the best commercial. Couple on first date is second, beaver/Bridgestone third.

the Beastie Boys.

they also split the middle between the geezer rock bands and the all-show/no substance bands of today. they're high-energy and have mass-appeal.

Weezer?

I think Weezer could be part of a Super Bowl ensemble, but I'm not sure they're popular enough to warrant their own halftime.

And I say that as someone who likes Weezer (but doesn't have cool points for liking them before anyone else knew who they were.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...uper_Bowl_halftime_shows

I always have to pull up a list at this point to see who hasn't played the super bowl. The one name that I've brought up in post-mortems for the past few years is Beyonce....if only because I'm amazed she has not done it yet. (...Plus or minus Jay-Z, who I already have penciled in as part of the "New York" game in 2014.)

The problem with most of the contemporary bands: if they've become popular enough to build a SB halftime around them, most contemporary music fans don't like them. I look at Nickelback with as much (if not more) disdain than I do the BEP, but I could see them doing being considered a draw (albeit one lambasted after-the-fact, just like this year).

Katy Perry would have the audience cheering for a wardrobe malfunction.

I hate myself for even having to mention the Bieb here....but he's fairly low-risk right now.

Eminem is probably a bit too risky for the NFL given some of his back catalog, but he's also been around long enough that I don't think he would embarass the league or the sponsors.

Bring in 3-4 artists who align with varying tastes (which was the intent behind having Slash and Usher show up this year), give them each a song or two, and have some sort of collaboration in the middle. If you can't get a U2 to perform every year, then playing for different demographics is the way to go.

I think the Black Keys would make an acceptable halftime show. Everyone's heard their music whether they know it or not considering how many advertisements use their tunes.

Foo Fighters could probably handle the task too. Maybe the Roots.

If the Black Keys did the halftime show I would cry. Mostly because I love them so much and dont want to see them subjected SB halftime.

It absolutely devastated me that 'Girl Is On My Mind' was used by a diamond jewelry company over the holidays. It always got my attention because, hey, its the Black Keys awesome! but then I would get depressed because I am one of those annoying music snobs who wants everyone to know I listen to awesome music but gets pissed when everyone starts listening to it as well.
