Official Wii fanboy thread

Anyone have any idea how many Wii's are being shipped for this Friday?

Wal Mart is supposed to have a decent quantity on the 6th (Wed.) They go on sale at 8 am.

EB Games is supposed to have some on the 8th.

Target, Toys R Us, and Best Buy are reported to be getting them on Sunday the 10th.

FYI, I bought mine on 26th at Best Buy and only had to get there 2 hours before open.

So, my mom has no idea what to get my for christmas and I don't know what to tell her. The only idea I have thus far is another Wii game. Right now, I just have Zelda, which dominates, but should have it beaten within a week or so.

Thus, I'm calling on brewerfan to help me pick my christmas gift. What other games to Wii owners have that are awesome? Right now, I'm looking at Second Opinion or COD3. Has anyone played Second Opinion? The reviews are pretty good, but I don't have any friends that have it, so I have nothing but internet reviews to base my decision on.

Second Opinion is good if you like the concept of the game. Rayman is also a great game full of mini-games. Some people love Excite Truck but those types of games are always renters for me. I'd say that is about it for right now unless you want Madden. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a solid beat em up as well but nothing special.

[ So the memory card is the same type I use in my camera, very cool. I do plan on getting Wii, is the price above good enough that I should purchase it now? Opinions? ]

The Wii's already pretty cheap, and I don't anticipate a price drop anytime within the next year. If you can get your hands on one, I'd definitely pick it up ASAP.

Yep, it has to be SD, not the mini or micro or any other type of memory cards. Also, I've been looking since I bought my Wii and for a name brand card, that's about as good as you're gonna find without a rebate, so you may as well get one if you know for certain you're getting a Wii and don't have a memory card to use in it.

Still, you do not "need" a memory card until you download a lot of Virtual Console games and stuff, so it's by no means something you need out of the box.

Edit-passwird.com has a link to a 2GB Kingston for $9.95, but it's actually like $35 with a $25 rebate, if you're willing to go through the hassle.

I'd say the most important related purchase you MUST make is a set of 4 AA Nimh rechargeable batteries with a charger. Otherwise you'll end up with a system you can't play because the remote is dead.

Whoops, sorry. The deal mentioned above is pretty good. I think I was able to get a 4GB card for about $50 off eBay, so while it's a good deal, I think it's pretty on par.

One thing to note is that Nintendo has said many memory card above 2GB will not work - I don't know the technical reason, but that's part of why I went 2GB - also because that's a butt-load of memory for the Wii considering it's a fourfold increase over the memory out of the box (512MB). If you don't download a ton of VC games, a gig or two should suit you very well.

Finally, I know a lot of people are still searching hard for a system, so the latest update is that the next shipment is set for next Sunday, the 17th. There's a website, Wii Seeker that is reported to be the best and most accurate locater on the net.

I really don't forsee needing a memory card unless you do VC stuff, mess with the pictures, or play seasons in sports game. I laughed when I saw Zelda only took up 1 block. You get over 2100 blocks with the harddrive.

Yep, game saves are pretty small. However, if you're downloading a bunch of N64 games and such, you'll benefit from the memory card. VC works like I understand itunes works. You download games and once you've paid, you can delete them from the console and go back and re-download it at any time without paying again. You essentially own the rights to download that game unlimited times, but only to the same Wii console. If you have lots of memory, though, you don't have to go back and download a bunch of times - you just store them on SD and move files back and forth between SD and system memory.

I'm also not sure, as you mentioned, how much space a sports game will take up. One thing to note is at present, you cannot save a game directly to SD while playing - you have to save it to the system and can then transfer the file to SD once you've exited to the Wii menu. I'd hope future firmware updates will give you the option to save and load directly to/from either memory type.

I finally did it. Some 50 hours in, I beat Zelda. The final boss fight is frickin' awesome - best time I've ever wasted.

Any hints on getting one of these? I hate calling everyday, as I think they are starting to know me and get annoyed. Are there certain days that these come out in certain stores?

Look at the Wiiseeker that's linked in my previous post. The next shipment is supposed to be one week from today (17th).

If you have HD, most people suggest buying the component cables - I think they run for about $30-40 and are supposed to considerably enhance your video quality if and only if you're running HD.

You literally don't need to buy anything extra. It comes with a remote (and infamous strap), nunchuk attachment, sensor bar, a pair of AA batteries for the remote, vertical stand, RCA cables, and the Wiisports game.

The only things you may wanna buy are batteries, SD card, and gamecube controllers to rock out VC games.

Someone also said you need to purchase some chords with the system in order to play, is that correct?

To get the best picture quality from your Wii, and assuming that your TV supports them, you need to buy component video cables. This will allow you to play in 480p and 16x9 widescreen. Even if you have a standard definition TV, the component cables will provide improved picture quality, if your TV accepts component input. Nintendo's website is the easiest place to order the cables.

Sidenote: why is it the one Sunday I'm able to get up two hours before the store opens is the same Sunday that there was no shipment of Wii's. I already have Zelda, and have the component cables on order. Woe is Mii.

Hey, I'm thinking of picking one up when there's one available, and it really helps to see stuff like apparently there's 512 kb internal, and other things that I missed looking through pages on IGN and elsewhere. I might just stick with the system, Wii Sports, and pick up a second remote and nunchuk for now.

I'd be interested in hearing personal opinions about the basic play and interface, and how impressed or unimpressed you all have been. I should probably play the heck out of Wii Sports for a while before buying more games, but I'm really curious about Madden (gameplay and new game options sound really fun with the new controls), Rayman (lots of mileage out of all the minigames?) and Second Opinion (performing surgeries, what's the deal, is it fun?).

Any little things that've really stuck out to anyone, and that you feel like typing in, I'd be happy to read through. Thanks, never thought I'd hop on a system with the "worst" graphics so soon after launch but the idea of those controllers might have us on tennis ASAP.

[ I'd be interested in hearing personal opinions about the basic play and interface, and how impressed or unimpressed you all have been. ]

I like the controls & interface a ton. When playing Wii sports, it's really nice (in every game but boxing) to be able to hold a drink in one hand, and the Wiimote in the other. When using the nunchuck, the play is very relaxed. You can position your left hand pretty much however you want, which sounds dumb, but provides for a very comfortable experience. I really can't think of much of a drawback for the controls, except for the occasional Wii Sports tennis elbow http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Haven't played Madden or Rayman, but Blockbuster does have games for rent, so maybe try that before you plop down 50 bucks.

I bought Second Opinion on Friday and beat it on Sunday (easy level, of course). There are two more difficulty levels and bonus missions after you beat the game, so there's more for me to play... but it could be one of those games you rent as well... not beacuse it's not good, but because it's short. The game itself was really fun and used the controls in probably the best way I have seen them used.

Zelda by far is one of the best games I've ever played, if not THE best. I'm not sure if it's your thing or not, but I can't say enough about it.
