Official Wii fanboy thread

The sports games actually originated from when they were designing and testing the controller. Since they were sitting around with these tech demos, why not toss them in for us to play around with? Man, does it feel goofy standing and swinging the controller like a baseball bat but it's amazing to watch the bat mirror your movements and stance.

Speaking of which, does anyone know where I could find some reviews of Monkey Ball, Zelda, Marvel Alliance and Tony Hawk?

If you go to gamerankings.com you can get lists of most of the internet videogame reviews along with an average score from all the reviewers.

The Wii is not a precise machine. During my first closed-door demo of the new console, I tried out a sci-fi title. I aimed the Wii Remote like a gun at some enemy drones while using the nunchuk's thumbstick to run around. I pointed at an incoming robot. The crosshairs drifted off the screen, and suddenly my perspective changed and I was facing the wall. Now the drones were all over me. I opened fire, but even at point-blank range I could barely hit anything.

The Wii Remote is the most advanced motion-sensing device in the history of gaming, but in the interests of accommodating almost unlimited variables, from the size of the TV to the player's physical proportions, the Wii tosses out much of the data that are collected. Depending on what's going on in the game, only a narrow range of your physical input is converted to on-screen action. Which is why I could hit one-handed home runs without winding up or following through.

Nintendon't: The case against the Wii.

According to this, it's not that the remote couldn't sense more sophistacted movements, it's just that they don't want it to? I'm personally not interested in motion sensing inputs that boil down to flicking a wrist. I love the idea of using physical inputs to play video games but I want more than this.

russ, I actually kind of like the fact that you can make smaller movements to play the games. Otherwise it would be very difficult for 4 people to play at the same time in most living rooms/dens/bedrooms. For example, to swing a tennis racket or bat, you need probably a 3-4 foot radius just to make sure you don't hit anything. Many games would be impossible, at least in many houses. Plus, having to do full swings would make those 7-8 hour marathon sessions very taxing.

However, if you want to do full swings, you can. It works either way. If it's more aesthetically pleasing to people to take a full swing, they easily can.

That said, I do wish the controller was slightly more responsive in some of the Wii Sports games (in particular I'd like to be able to control the speed of the ball better in tennis and what kind of punch I throw better in boxing). I hope this is a limitation of the games and not the controller.

Overall, Wii Sports is very fun and the golf and bowling are excellent. Tennis is fun but limited, baseball is ok but is basically on the level of a yahoo.com game and I haven't used the boxing enough to get a real feel for it yet but it seems very, very cool (there is an arcade boxing game out that uses motion sensing technology. I can't remember the name of it but it is fun and Wii Boxing reminds me a bit of it).

Just got through playing the heck out of Wii Sports. At first, I thought it was cool, but not spectactular. After playing it more thoroughly with family, I had a BLAST. It was really fun to see my dad play the home run derby, my mom bowl, and my brother talk smack to all his boxing opponents.

It isn't your average gaming experience, for sure... and that's why it's so cool.

[ The problem is that I can't get the thing to connect to the internet. It detects the network and lets me enter to code, but the connection test always says that it failed to connect. Any help on this? ]

I have the same problem, which I also have with my Nintendo DS. There are some wireless routers which it flat out doesn't support.

You can also purchase the nintendo wi-fi usb connector, which hooks into a computer that's connected to the internet.

I just got finished playing Wii with some friends for the past 5 hours. Needless to say the Wii just went from "Meh." to straight to the top of my Christmas wish list.

I also discovered my girlfriend throws a wicked curveball.

Finally got the Wii connected to wireless. I just had to go from WPA to WEP, and that did the trick. From what I hear, all routers will be a little different, but going with the most simple encryption gives you the best chance of making it work.

Zelda: TP - great game or greatest game? I'm about 25 hours in and it has blown my mind.

Just did the same thing as well... worked like a charm!

I'm probably about 4 hours in now. Freakin' sweet.

I've got ya beat by almost 30 hours and can say that it simply gets better and better. The new weapons/tools make it really awesome.

On the wireless front, I had to make my connection unsecured for whatever reason to get the Wii to connect. This is not a problem at the moment, as I live in the country where only the elderly couple next door may be in range of my wireless router. When I move though, I'll probably need either a new router that's more compatible or the $35 Wii adapter - no biggie.

25 hrs in. Its nice that this one is actually challenging. I am trying to hold off playing though for a while as my component cables have finally shipped from Nintendo. I want to enjoy the 2/3 left of the game in 480p. I know some of the textures are "gamecube" era and its not in HD, but there are certain scenes in the game that are just so beautiful.

Spoiler:

The snow temple was really a pleasure to play through. It is up there with the Fire Temple in Orinca as one of the best levels I have ever played in a game. Also, how cool is the joust part on the bridge when that one guy steels the kid from Karikaco(sp?) village. The video where Link rides in through the town after them was great too...just a very well done section of the game.

Anyone else interested in a Brewerfan.net friend code exchange?

Name: Zac

Code: 2012 0994 4733 6509

To successfully share a Mii you need to enable travel and set a Mii to Mingle. Both people also need to add the code and name.

For those concerned about my Mii ruining Wii Sports, my Mii hits better than I do in softball.

Does anyone know of a good Wii site that gives you news on when updates will come out and how to use some of the features? I'm not sure on the whole SD card memory yet like what you can save to it.

***Semi-spoiler***

Are you using a guide or walkthrough? I'm a little over 30 hours in and just got to the part where you find the partial mirror. I've only used a walkthrough on parts that just made no sense, like when you needed to use an ability you didn't know you had (warping with the volcanic boulder).

Spoilers:

I broke down and got a guide when I couldn't find the 3rd and 4th Poe. There were a few other times I got stuck (mostly in the water temple) and for these instances I was able to find a quick answer on the message board at Gamefaqs.com .

End Spoilers

One of the nice things about the Zelda games is that I have always thought the puzzles were for the most part intuitive and could actually be figured out. Most use a simple formula where you will need one of the items you just recently attained to get past the next part. In past games there were very few times that I actually got stuck and needed help. Playing through this game, I have realised that I am less patient and seek out help a lot quicker now. I dont have as much time to play games anymore and just get annoyed when I am stuck trying to figure something out. The downside to checking a guide or message board is that you loose that sense of accomplishment when you figure something out on your own. The noise that shoots out of the controller when you get something can be very rewarding. I almost feel like I am cheating myself out of those moments by checking a guide now...but obliviously the game is still amazingly enjoyable.

That's why I set a criterion of needing to be stuck for at least about a half hour on something before I can go to the net. Lunabean.com, FWIW, has a great free walkthrough. I love to figure the stuff out myself, but sometimes it just gets too frustrating and I have to go to the waljkthrough, otherwise I may still be stuck halfway to where I am now.

Yeah, there's a very Pavlovian thing going on with that chime.

I just hooked up the component cables I got in the mail from Nintendo. Anyone thinking about getting them should do it right away. Zelda in particular looks like a completely different game. While not PS3 or XBox 360, with the component cables you can defiantly tell that this system is past the last generation. The lack of HD sucks, but the characters in Zelda blow anything from Gamecube out of the water.
